Ted Nugent 2-10-03, 12:57 AM Hmmm a few questions on home-based radio broadcasting...
1. - How easy is it to get caught without a licence?
2. - It's legal to do it if you're using less than 100 milliwatts of output power, but how will only having 100 milliwatts of output power affect my broadcast?
3. - Do I need anything else besides a transmitter, an audio mixer, a stereo system with cassette deck, a CD player, a microphone, an antenna, and an RF amp?
4. - What other restrictions are on radio broadcasting from home?
5.- And finally, is it hard to get up and running?
Christine 2-10-03, 01:57 AM Ted, are you trying do something illegal again? :tsk: :tsk:
Ted... I'd be careful if I were you... I've been doing some reading myself because I wanted to some 'HAM' Radio myself. First of all, you NEED a license if you operate any transceiver or any radio equipment that produces 5 watts or more. When you get licensed, the FCC issues you "Call Letters". This is your personal ID. When you broadcast any radio transmission you are required to announce your call letters. The FCC frequently monitors the airwaves and if you don't have an official call letter they will track you down and it's been done in the past.
Sounds to me like you want start your own radio station, like play music and stuff. I think that's pretty cool but if you don't go thru the proper procedures and channels to get certified and licensed, we will be visiting you behind bars pal... sorry.
I used to be DJ at college and I had a blast doing it, so I admire you for wanting to do it... but you gotta do it right or else you will in some deep trouble. Trust me. ;)
If you want to read more on it, try a few of these links:

Thank you for the links. They're quite informative. I'm trying to read up on this as much as I can before I put any money into it.
I read that under part 15 of the FCC's rules that it's legal without a licence, in the FM band, if you're only using 100 milliwatts of output power and an antenna with a maximum length of 3 feet. I read that this would give me a range of one mile at most. Which is fine because I live in a well populated area. I'm still looking into it though, I only read it online so, I don't know if it's actually true or not. Must be careful if I don't wanna go to jail!
Those HAM radios are cool. See, what got me into this whole radio thing was that me and a friend wanted to set up CB radios in our houses to save on long distance phone bills. LOL. I saw some really cheap ones on Ebay, but I'm checking out Radioshack next week. I think I'll ask about amateur radio there as well.

That sounds stupid. I hope you fail . :p
sketcher 2-11-03, 12:33 PM You're looking into microbroadcasting. Take a look at frn.net (http://www.frn.net) but in particular, you can take a looksee at their message board (http://www.frn.net/vines/). They have a forum on microbroadcasting.
If it's pirate radio, there are easy ways of doing it without getting caught wink wink.

wavemaster 2-12-03, 06:48 PM Oh boy...next thing you're asking for is a little tactical nuclear device, just in case that you need to protect your home, huh? :D
Okay, I don't know how active and good you local authorities are, but I can tell you two little tales from my youth days ;) :
I lived in a block whith a lot of other kids and teens, and the older of us started to rig up their own CB stations to avoid racking up huge phone bills (local calls are still not toll-free here). Of course, once the mind is set on "Home Improvements"...some of them had used low-watt-boosters (very useful, especially with the knowledge that all of them lived within a range of 300 feet  ), and when they started their evening chats, it was almost impossible to watch TV then as we were hanging on a single antenna for the whole block.
The whole nuisance went on for about a week until the authorites raided the block and seized all illegal CB radios. Just FYI...all of them were fined with a minimum of 500$ - not bad for 16-year old kids.
My uncle gave me his mobile CB set as I had mentioned how nice it would be to chat with my buddies while driving around. He "forgot" to mention that the little black box he gave me in addition to the CB radio was actually a 50 Watts-booster (maybe I hadn't listened closely enough  ) - I had always wondered why the fuse went up whenever I switched on the radio.
I knew that using the booster was illegal, but that didn't stopped me fooling around with the mike until two patrol cruisers pulled me over, followed by a van with all the technical stuff to locate the evil (hmm...that 5.5 meter long antenna fixed on the boot and strapped on the front fender was probably a little bit too outrageous). Result: $650 fine and prohibition of the ownership and use of any radio transmitting device for 5 years, not even a wee walkie talkie.
Last but not least...the RIAA will also be glad to see your lists of all the songs you have played (you have made such lists, huh?) so you can pay the royalties for the audio transmission. :goofy:
djdaffy1227 2-12-03, 06:53 PM That would be the RIAA, ASCAP and BMI that you need licences from to play music over the air.
Wave, I would have to ask you not to speak to me anymore, I don't converse with law breaking citizens

Okay...I admit that I have even falsificated my bus ticket to get some harder stuff in the supermarket... :tease:
cultleader 2-12-03, 07:20 PM I say the world needs more pirate radio!
I don't know about the rest of the world but radio here in Cleveland is the worst it has been in 20 or 25 years. If I had the resources,I'd start a pirate radio station(possibly a mobile station).
Radio these days is so damn pathetic,I've even heard that their going to due away with live DJ's in favor of a pre-recorded computer controled format.
the only radio I will even consider listening to,is college radio.
Ted Nugent 2-12-03, 08:32 PM 50 watt booster? Damn, Wave.
Well, I'm still looking into it. It doesn't look so dangerous if I'm not interferring with anyone's frequency. Plus, if I do a mobile station, I could broadcast from a far away place (like a mountain top) and get away by the time I see anyone comming.
.................Okay, I think I put too much thought into this.
I just think it'd be neat. Plus, like Cultleader said, radio today sucks! You know, the only 80's station we have here is an 80s/90s mix station. Also, we don't have ANY real punk stations! Or Metal stations. Well, we do have a few metal stations but they play nu-metal as well. The world needs a Ted Station. :D
