CNN just posted an article that said that Q magazine from Britain is publishing a list of the Top 100 Songs That Changed The World. If you want to read the article, here is the link.

Click Here (http://www.cnn.com/2003/SHOWBIZ/Music/01/14/odd.elvis.reut/index.html)

The full list isn't out yet, but the top 10 are as follows:

10. Do They Know It's Christmas (Band Aid)
9. Blue Monday (New Order)
8. Walk This Way (Run-DMC)
7. Like a Rolling Stone (Bob Dylan)
6. Strange Fruit (Billie Holiday)
5. Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana)
4. Rapper's Delight (Sugarhill Gang)
3. God Save The Queen (The Sex Pistols)
2. I Wanna Hold Your Hand (The Beattles)
1. That's All Right (Elvis Presley)

I decided to post this on the 80's Exchange because I was impressed with how many 80's songs there are.

"Blue Monday" in the top 10?? I love the song but did it really change the world? If so, how? Just because it was the biggest selling 12" single? Wouldn't that mean "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby should be top 10 then since it was the biggest selling 7" of all time?

I can't disagree with the other choices.

Blue Monday is surprising. Is it on there just because it was such a different style of music? Interesting. I agree with most on the list. Really good! :)

The only reason I can think of Blue Monday being there was because it was the first Breakthrough Single from the Manchester/Rave Scene which dominated British Music in the Late 80's and early 90's. Following on from this, Bands such as the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, The Charlatans flooded the British Music Scene with Music that was reminiscent of the Psychadelic era, to the extent that the Summer of '88 in Britain became known as the Summer of Love.

Bands such as Joy Division, New Order and the ones listed above played at a club called the Hacienda in Manchester which became the biggest, baddest and freshest club in England. This started the birth of the Super Club in Britain and the demise of the Nite Club. From this point on, clubs which catered to the growing Indie and Dance Culture became the Standard and the old Disco and Chart influenced Night Clubs start to close. Since this point Dance Music and Indie Music have become huge in the UK maybe more so than in America.

I dont know if that is the reason but its the only one I can think of.

By the way the Q website is well worth checking out if you like any British music.

I agree with everyone about "Blue Monday". The rest of the list I can see though. I'm glad to see "Do They Know It's Christmas?" on that list.
