Anyone else in the UK see Channel 4's '10 best 80's Electronic Pop Bands' presented by Marc Almond on Friday night?
Some really great bands were included in the top 10, and from memory top 3 was:
1. Pet Shop Boys
2. Depeche Mode
3. Vince Clarke/Erasure
OMD, Tears For Fears, New Order, Thompson Twins, Gary Numan, Human League and Bronski Beat were also in the top 10 although I can't recall what numbers. M, Soft Cell (naturally!) and Kraftwerk got honourable mentions too.
The only surprise was 'Tears For Fears', who I don't think really offered us very much in Electronic Pop - Ultravox would have been by far a better choice.
No arguements with the PSB's being voted number 1 though - well deserved I think :)

I love the Pet Shop Boys but #1 when Kraftwerk is only an honorable mention....Sorry, but Kraftwerk is my favorite, plus they are the originators!...and Tears for Fears??? :D

Tears For Fears is a great band, but I wouldn't have put them on that list. I agree Ultravox should have been included. I'm really surprised Depeche Mode didn't make #1.
Thoroughly deserving. Glad to hear they won.
I think the show was a repeat, anyway.

That may well have been the case, but what was your opinion on the outcome?

Well Chopper,
You wont hear me complaining. I love PSB and I think that title is fully deserved (although maybe Depeche Mode may feel they have a claim to the title)
Kraftwerk lower than the Thompson Twins? I find that hard to believe even though I dont particularly like Kraftwerk I do feel that in this category they should have had a higher ranking.

I would say this is my favorite genre of the 80's (well, that and R&B/Rap). All the groups mentioned are great!

Can't go wrong with that list...kudos to PSB! Although like Stacy, quite surprised that Depeche Mode didn't claim #1...that must've been a real close decision.

Ultravox is an excellent band, but "The Hurting" by Tears For Fears is an electronic masterpiece. It is one of the few LP's I can think of where the album tracks are actually better than the singles. Dark, moody, early-eighties electro-pop. Pure heaven!
Actually, I did make a mistake on the listing - Kraftwerk was in fact number 5 on the list.
I think this was based on the number of hit singles rather than the fact they were the 'pioneers' of Electronic Pop.

Yes Chopper, you're right! The programme's chart is based on number of Hit singles in England. Which explains why Kraftwerk were not higher on the list.

If that's the case then I can't argue :) I just thought it was a randomly placed survey.
