View Full Version : What Toons Rocked Your 80s World?
Aeryn221 12-29-02, 10:29 PM Well, I'm kind of taking a cue from Trixter. He started us talking about today's cartoons. I just thought it'd be cool to hear your thoughts on the toons we watched as kids in the decade of decadence.
I have lots of favs. In case you couldn't already tell Jem is one. ;)
Also, I love She-Ra, He-Man, and oh yeah...Thundercats. I wanted to be Cheetara (sp?) when I grew up. Now there was a feline who could kick ass! :fight2:
Culture Club Freak 1-02-03, 05:02 PM Smurfs, Carebears,Gummi Bears,Duck Tales,Rescue Rangers,The Get along gang (lamo name though,LOL),The Peanuts ,Garfield ,and Looney Tunes. (I think thats it,lol):D

Aeryn221 1-03-03, 05:50 PM Culture Club Freak - Who were the Get Along Gang? I know all the others you listed, but I never heard of that one.
Hey does anyone know where I can get copies of old He-Man/She-Ra episodes? I'm kind of looking for the Xmas special they did quite a few years back. ;)
All most all of the above. and when more people post, all most all of the bellow.
So many to name.

"The Get along Gang " was about little woodland creatures who had a club, they always did what was right.
If your thinking cheesy-you're defenitly right ,but hey I used to like it,lol:lol:
I enjoyed a lot of cartoons as a kid and throughout the 80s. The one I remember most from the 80s was "Fangface" a "Scooby Doo" rip off about a teenager who would turn into a werewolf whenever he saw the moon or a picture of the moon. It was hilarious, but it was short lived and not many people remember it.
my favorite or the ones i watched a lot were He-man *snickers*, smurfs, Gi Joes, Rainbow brite and that was it. i liked watching the Patridge family and the monkees with my dad. besides they were pretty chessy.
Tydestra 1-14-03, 02:16 AM I was all about Thunder-Cats and Smurfs
Monocular 1-17-03, 04:59 PM Yeah, didn't the Fangface cartoon also feature a character who wore a doghouse over his head? He was a big "superhero" comic character and when he took the doghouse off his head people would freak out (we never got to see what his face actually looked like).
I loved the Smurfs, Shirt Tales, Pandamonium (remember that one?), Thundar the Barbarian, Dungeons & Dragons, Galaxy High, Fat Albert (I think there were some first-run episodes in the early 80s), all of the "video game cartoons" (Pac Man, Pole Position), the Rubick's Cube cartoon, Mr. T.
Do any of you remember these shows?

hey does anyone remember "shirt-tales"? or what the name was of the cartoon that had people stuck in a cartoon world that were from the real world and it had music videos in it? something like flipside? I loved that one, along with all of the others named. How about Hung Kung Fooey!
I remember Hong Kong Fooey, but never really got into it.

That was Kidd Video. Pretty silly fun, as I remember it. :D Some of the original songs from the band (which played at the end) were pretty good, too. There's a fan site dedicated to Kidd Video at http://www.kvflipside.org/
DrRotwang! 4-21-03, 09:25 PM I was really quite fond of M.A.S.K. Watched it every day on Channel 5 in Mexico City.
See, I grew up in mexico, so I saw lots of other cartoons there -- we didn't get much stuff from here. I saw, for instance, the vehicle-team Voltron when the rest of my peers back home were watching the Lion team.
The day I came back home was the day they started showing what would become my all-out favorie cartoon of the 80's, though -- and even then I wouldn't get to see it until the early 1990s, after pop culture had turned to crap.
A cartoon full of drama, tragedy, love triangles, warfare, death, angst and a tuna fish. A boy, two girls, alien invaders and more giant transforming vehicles than you can cram onto a toy shelf.
I speak, of course, of Superdimensional Fortress Macross, known in the US as the first third of Robotech.
This show had it ALL, and it still does.

Speed Racer Nyeehhh...not quite, Jeff.
G-Force, AKA Battle of the Planets, was an American adaptation of a Japanese show entitled Gatchaman, and -by some accounts- also Scientific Ninja Team Go (can any otaku confirm this?).
Voltron, on the other hand, was...well, there were THREE Voltron shows. The Lion-team Voltron most American kids grew up with was called Golion or somesuch; the vehicle-team Voltron, seen in Mexico, was Dangaioh or something.
The third Voltron show, about three vehicles that formed one 'bot, never aired stateside -- as far as I know. I welcome correction in this matter as in all others.

No. That show was called MicroMan (?). Fangface was a rip-off of Scooby Doo, but I always loved how when the dude turned to a wolf he would pull out two enormous slices of bread and put his friend in between :D
As far as 80s cartoons go, nothing - and I mean NOTHING - will ever come close to Ulysses 31. That was the best animated series ever made and one of the best shows to come from the 80s :)

"Belle & Sebastian," I believe. I used to watch that on Nickelodeon.
Dangermouse was one of my favorites, too--I liked British humor even as a kid! (Was thrilled to discover recently that it's available on DVD, though only from Amazon.uk--not a problem for me since I have a region-free DVD player, but there might be compatibility issues for people with American-made players... don't remember whether the discs were listed as being all-region or not...)

bluenoser80 5-20-04, 08:43 PM Transformers, hands down favourite. M.A.S.K was good too. Saturday morning cartoons rocked overall. Suppose there are too many cartoon channels now to make them a viable option, but would be nice to see that trend make a comeback.
Jefferson Starship 6-04-04, 11:59 AM You were making sense up until the last line where you said something about "c'est la vie je te plummare" or something :p But we can agree that les 80s cartoons rock :)

oldskoolboy 6-14-04, 06:18 PM i used to rush home from school to watch voltron,transformers,gi-joe,she-ra,he man, gummy bears, thundercats, silverhawks, spiderman and his amazing friends, super friends, healthcliff, tom and jerry kids,smurfs,c.o.p.s.,mask...those were the days like 2 hours of television everyday after school
Voltron, Transformers, Thundercats, Dungeon and Dragons (loved!), Johnny Quest....
I was such a tomboy.
There was also a cartoon called 'The Littles." A family of tiny half people/half mice (or something) lived in the walls and such of a real human family. It was soooo cheesy, but very escapist. I wanted to be a little.
I love all those 80s cartoons. I just watched the Smurfs and Snorks last night on some Nickelodeon channel. Was Get A long gang about a bunch of different animals that lived in a box car of a train? Also did the Shirt tails live in a tree at the park? This has been driving me crazy!! Did anybody watch Nickolodeon in the 80s. When they had Pinwheel and You Can't Do That On Television. All those shows were the best!!
