One of the most amazing shocks I ever received was when I discovered that Michael McDonald was not of black descent. He has a very misleading voice, certainly had me fooled.

I think that alongside Art Garfunkel, Michael is perhaps the finest male vocal in the business. I bought 'The Very Best Of' and it's great, just love 'Ya Mo Be There' with James Ingram, 'What A Fool Believes' and 'On My Own' with Patti Labelle.

Great stuff, great artist. Any thoughts on this artist and his work?

Yeah, Chopper. Agreed on the fact that he has one of the most distincitive voices on the planet! I loved Yah mo be there, but I must confess that my 2 favourites of his belong to the 70's

It keeps you running by the Doobie Brothers and "Peg" by Steely Dan!

Thanks for the reply Prefab, I was beginning to think that nobody out there had heard of him and maybe I'd dreamt it all up.

Those were 2 cracking tunes agreed. Another one of my favs that I didn't mention earlier was 'Sweet Freedom'. Just love that one too!

Never heard of Michael Mcdonald? Egads...surely you jest! He's always been one of my favorite singers! A friend of mine went to see him perform with the Doobie Brothers several years back and said he sounded just as good then as he did years ago! He has a fantastic voice. :)

Mom always said if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all ;)

Not a fan then DJ?

That does surprise me - this must be the first time that we've ever had a musical disagreement!

He's had good songs like "I keep forgettin'" and "Yah mo B there" (only because I love James Ingram :) ) but for the most part his voice just isn't my thing.

I think one of my fave songs he ever did was WHAT A FOOL BELIEVES.

More than likely, just a few of us can remember when he & the Doobies were on the tv show WHAT'S HAPPENIN'..(that was in the 70's what can I say? I'm old! LOL!) :)

Ah, daffy just has a problem with gravely voices. ;) I would have to take exception to Chopper's assertion that MM is the best voice in the biz. Peabo Bryson, James Ingram, Daryl Hall, hell I'd even throw Kenny Loggins in there as some of the best. MM is in there somewhere, but he's got company. :p

I do love many of MM's songs, including "Sweet Freedom".

Steady on there Nolanbuc, old boy! :D

Never said he was the best. Just perhaps he might be.

Like yourself, I also adore Daryl Hall, James Ingram and King Kenny. A tough choice to seperate them I must confess.....anybody?

About time someone brought up Kenny Loggins LOL! I haven't seen very much of him at all here on the xchange. He had alot of hits in the 80's also.

I am a fan of gravly voices also..(Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart, etc..)

I'm a little confused, I don't consider Michael McDonald's voice to be "gravely"

I love women who have gravely voices like Stevie Nicks, Kim Carnes and Bonnie Tyler :)

Ah, shoot me, but I never liked Michael McDonald or the Doobie Brothers, still don't and doubt I ever will. The only thing that makes me turn a radio station dial faster than a Michael McDonald song is a Bread song.

Daffy: I was just kidding around. :D How about the term "husky" then? (voices, not women)

Chopper: I was just kidding around. :D

No harm meant, guys. I just like alot of different singers.

Oh, and don't be dissing Bread. There are lots of great Bread tunes out there, like....um...er...(let me get back to you.) ;)

I really really like Bread. I even have solo stuff from David Gates :D Bread did "If", "Baby I'm a want you" and the original version of "Everything I own" which Boy George remade in the 80's.

I must confess to a liking for "Guitar Man" and in fairness to Bread some other artists of that genre that I like include

Gordon Lightfoot
Leonard Cohen
James Taylor
Clifford T Ward
John Denver

There! I've outed myself!!!!!!

Well, as long as we are outing ourselves, Annies Song by John Denver is an incredible love song, Leonard Cohen is one of my BIG faves, (Tower of Song, kickass) OKay, every one settle down, but I *like* The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald. Well written, haunting. Of course I like James Taylor, great songwrtier. I had a friend in college that was named James Taylor and with me being named Connor MacLeod, we caught hell constantly, but it was all in fun. One more "there can be only one" joke and I may go over the edge though. :D

Some of those songs from the 70's were great! I hadn't thought of the Edmund Fitzgerald for years! :)

The only Michael McDonald song that I really like is "Sweet Freedom" (1986).
