View Full Version : Respect for the 80s...is it a losing battle?

Seriously, I've been doing some thinking...

Is the fight to get people to respect the 80s even worth fighting? The media perpetually makes fun of the decade...celebrities perpetually regret the decade...to be honest, I've even noticed there's been a small increase in "80s regrets" threads and posts on this website.

Should we bother to continue getting people to respect the decade or should we call it a day?

Sincerely,

John "outofplacechild" Kilduff

I think the media makes fun of every decade.......I don't think it's anything to worry about.........at all.

Ted's right. The 70s were really blasted back in the 80s and early 90s, but then next thing there was a revival happening and groups like Abba and The Beegees, who were considered really uncool back then were cool again. And we were seeing a lot of 70s shows coming back on TV.

The media can blast the 80s all they like, but that's just the extra loud voice of a minority I think. Most people I talk to, (even if they aren't big fans of 80s stuff) don't seem to have anything bad to say about that decade.

60's...they made fun of hippies
70's...they made fun of disco

I don't think that they are singling out the 80's at all. Who cares if they make fun of it as they have of other decades? Look at all the people who will make a pos. point from the 80's for every neg. point said. The 80's were fantastic for me and I have alot of memories from them just when my parents were growing up in the 50's. Whatever your decade is..it will be #1 to you for as long as YOU want it to. :)

Like, people make fun of all decades and of all fashion things so on and so forth. To any decade...not just 80s...people regret things.

I don't care who makes fun of the 80's....I like the 80's....I'd venture to say everyone on this site likes the 80's...that's all that matters. Who cares if some want to talk trash about it or regret it or whatever. Whether they like it or not, this site and every 80's site out there proves the 80's ruled whether they like it or not! :hammer::lol:

I don't think we're going to change other people's minds about the decade. Like has been said, there is plenty in every decade to be made fun of and lots to like. For us around here, the things we like about the '80s outweigh the other stuff, but it doesn't mean there aren't parts of it we regret. Not everything was perfect even in the '80s.;)

Y'know - lots o'things prob'ly seem "silly" in hindsight ta most people. I'm thinkin it's just their way of distancin themselves from things they're embarassed ta admit they did back then [an prob'ly enjoyed]. As fer me, sure it was an outrageous decade an I did some pretty outrageous things - so what? I'm -still- doin most of em, an if someone's got a problem with that, they can sod off. ;) Far as I'm concerned, th'80's -still- rule!

I guess so...

It's just difficult to reconcile the statement on the front page about showing people that the 80s aren't something to be ashamed of with stuff like "3 Worst Songs"/"3 Worst Movies"/The various "What clothing do you wish you hadn't wore?" threads I've been seeing.

Also, abcmcd, I understand that not everything was perfect in the 80s...my problem is that most everyone I see concentrates on the imperfect stuff instead of what they enjoyed. I don't like seeing that stuff on here...I feel it goes against what the website is all about.

Are we still friends, though, abc?

Sincerely,

John "outofplacechild" Kilduff

It doesn't matter to me that people make fun of the 80s. When you love someone or something you don't care what anyone else thinks. I apply this principal to a lot of things in life--there is a great freedom in not caring what other people think about most things.

I don't even understand what you trying to say, I don't find anything being done dispectful to the 80's. Sure once in a while their are a few jokes about the hairstyles, the clothing, or the music, but it's all in good fun, have you ever heard Dexy's Midnight Runners, or seen the mullets wore back then, it's all campy but it;s fun. Both David Spade and Adam Sandler constantly bring up 80's refrences in their movies, not as bad jokes but just having fun with a decade that was great if you grew up in , but may look a little strange to people who didn't experience it.

80's radio stations are popping up everyday, other stations have alotted times to play 80's music, VHI has a classic's station, they have had 3 failed tv series in less than a year about the 80's, not because their isnt an interest or they would have never done them, but one was rushed into production and was poorly made, another was on the WB.

Right now is the time where the people of the 70's and 80's are getting older , moving into the more prominent positions, and have money. They are the decision makers of the market to some degree.

I guess I don't see the dispect for the 80's, of course we get a few jokes, and some are well desrved, the 80's have a look and feel of campyness, but Jesus it was fun, but for the most part I ahng out with others from my own era, and am not kickin it with some Eminem lookalike whose pants are hanging off his ass, so sure probably makes fun of my house, when my friend and I are sitting out back with AC/DC blasting, but it's no different than the look of disgust I have when his crew is strolling by , pierced everything , listening to some some sort of crap. So I guess it's to each his own, :)

I *like* Dexy's Midnight Runners...

I have no problems with mullets...

Is it any flucking wonder I gave myself the nickname "outofplacechild"?

I just want to know what look and feel the 90s have. If the 80s were campy, what in the holy white fluck is the look and feel of the 90s? When will people say "Ugh, I can't believe I wore flannel and had stringy, unwashed hair...I can't believe I listened to Candlebox and Seven Mary Three...What was I thinking when I was watching 'Wings'"? When will those things be said?

Sincerely,

John "outofplacechild" Kilduff

I look at it this way, who cares if some people make fun or don't get our love of the 80s. We all love them and that is all that should matter. We keep the 80's flame continuously burning in all of us! :D

Cal has it spot on here. I believe this is the reason why we saw a 60s revival in the 80s, a 70s revival in the 90s and yes an 80s revival now. And we'll most likely see a 90s revival in the next decade.

I think there is plenty of evidence we are seeing an 80s revival with shows set in the 80s (even if they don't last long), 80s groups reforming, remakes of 80s songs. In New Zealand at the moment, we are being treated to a big run of 80s movies on prime time TV. Classic hit radio stations playing a lot of 80s music are here. I think these signs prove that there is a lot of respect for the 80s. People in our generation are in control and bringing it back.

People make fun of the past because it's fun to do so. Everyone changes and so do our tastes. I for one definitely wouldn't want to have some of the hairstyles we saw in the 80s. Not even the one I used to have!

I'm with Roem! I could care less if someone doesn't speak of the 80's with respect or not. I love the 80's and every one here loves the 80's and that's all that matters! If someone else doesn't, it's their loss.

So, I guess basically what most of you are saying is that there are some parts of the decade you regret, but you still like it anyway?

Just because they make fun of the 60's and 70's as much as they do the 80's doesn't mean they respect the 80's. But when you think about it, there aren't many signs out there that people "repspect" the 60's and 70's either. So IMHO, the 80's aren't any more or less respected than other recent decades. But that doesn't change the fact that the 80's deserve more respect than they get!!!

I was a kid throughout the 80's....I had a blast! I have no regrets, but there are styles I'd never do again... As Recker pointed out, time goes by, tastes change, you look back and laugh. Not with the intention of disrespecting or disliking, but just having a little fun with the cooky memories

There's good and bad to everything...every rose has it's thorn  Ya take the good, ya take the bad, ya take 'em both and then ya have the facts of life

 Well said Roem! I love the 80s. I'm so glad that's the decade my high school days were in. But like every other decade it did have a few bad movies, styles, songs... I just figure it gave it some of it's charm. :amy:

to quote DEVO:

"Use your freedom of choice....your freedom of choice"

Everyone just loves what they want to love and sometimes dis what they don't like - it's just the way it is.

Look at football and stuff - you love the team you support and usually say "all the other teams totally suck"

I've never been teased about how I look and my extreme devotion to living the 80's life style in modern times, but if I ever was - i would tell them to stick it up their bottoms, it's my choice ;)

I guess you could say that was the case for me. I've said in the past that for most of it, I had a miserable time in the 80s, but there was just so much good about it, that I look back on it now with fondness. Generally I only remember the good things about it, I choose to forget the bad.

They may slag it off, but deep down I think that most people are very proud to have lived through such a colourful decade.

80's music and styles are still much enjoyed where I live. Can't wait for the next 80's party next summer!

Don't know, but since I wasn't here when it was first posted........

I do think the 80s get mocked, especially by the self absorbed baby boomers who think the world revolves around everything they do. The generation that won WWII wanted to give their kids everything that they as parents missed. Unfortunately the boomers wound up spoiled and spit on everything their parents stood for. They hate the 80s because it was a rejection of the 60s.
