Yep it's true, Friday night was the first time in my life I actually spent the evening in a country music bar, and the scary thing is ...it wasn't too bad, most of the music I didn't have a clue who it was and didn't really even care one way or the other, but one artist I did like was Toby Keith... and I got to hear more of him at a party after the bar

lets see, my pro's and cons

pro: no dew ragged, jeans falling off ass Eminem clones acting tough

con: Cowboy hat, rope belt wearing extra X chromosome guys acting tough

Pro: men can't dance at country bars
Con: women still can

Pro: lots of hot older women in late 20's and 30's
Con: my girlfriend was with me

Pro: No Crappy modern dance music
Con: lots of Dixie Chick music

Pro: No steam and excessive lights on the dance floor
Con: where the hell is the mechanical bull like in Urban Cowboy?

Pro: drinks were two dollars
Con: It appears the tomato juice in Caesars work as a laxitive, however (and I'm no doctor) it also appears that tabasco sauce is not broken down in the digestive tract and the hot part leaves you body as the tomato juice takes effect.

Pro: no worry about Puff Daddy arriving and shooting up the place
Con: I think I saw the two shirtless guys that beat up the first base coach for the White Sox

Actually it was a good night, older crowd, lots of funs and I sort of wish I liked the music or knew who any of the artists were

I've always wanted to get on one of them bulls... I bet they would be fun, until I end up flying across the room to the snickering of "Hey, look at that city girl fly!"

Cal, if you came to Texas you would probably find some club around here with the mechanical bull. Gilley's (I think that is what it was called) in Pasadena used to have one, but i'm not sure if they still do. TJ might know since he lives in Houston (which is sorta close to there).

I am actually from Pasadena. Gilley's is loooooong gone. It closed down 10 or so years ago. Shortly after that there was a "mysterious" fire. All that is left is a slab.

As for the mechanical bull, if you were to come out here next week you could ride one at the Pasadena Rodeo. They always have one there.

They have one in Jackson Tennessee. The bar that is across from Spinakers, has one. (spinakers is a bar as well.)

I love country bars. When I'm not playing bars I only hang out at country bars. I feel like I fit in there, you can be yourself and not what you think everyone wants you to be. Plus, country girls are good looking and friendly. They will actually talk to you even if you don't have money and a big, fast car. I love the music too (except Dixie Chicks and Shania). Toby Keith is one of the best, I had front row tickets to his concert not too long ago. In fact, I'm going to see Travis Tritt on the 18th.

PS: the mechanical bull from the movie ended up in Erie at a bar I played at called Tommy's whiskey River. It is no longer there though.

I used to love country bars. They can be a blast! I did get to see mechanical bull riding at the one I went to in The Stockyards in Fortworth. They had live bull riding in there too. It's a huge bar but I can't remember the name. TJ knows.

I used to get dragged to country bars by my two countrified brothers. Being that I live in Memphis, we had plenty of cowboy joints to choose from. But lucky for me that drinking $1 longnecks and watching people line-dance were two of my favorite pastimes.

That is all we have around here. Unfortunally, they are not as fun as Cal described. We have a bunch of redcecks sitting at the bar drinking and some attempting to dance. The dance bars for the younger crowd seems to do well. :)

There used to be a hard rock/mental bar and that was awesome but it closed down. :(

Funny thread, Cal

Actually, we had a country bar here...the "Nashville" (how imaginative :D). It was located in an area where you don't want to go after sunset without the protection of a powerful hand gun - that's probably the reason why it has closed a few years ago.

Lacking of enough pick-ups, the parking place was filled with old Mercedes' and Fords (and the inevitable Cadillac Eldorado of the owner), and the inside was the dream of every movie director who was in search for a B-road movie location. Apart from this, the German counterparts acted like you have seen it in a dozen movies...strangers with dyed and spiked-up hair were not very welcomed.

And yes, they even had a bull-riding machine in there (out of order).

Country Music............................Scares me!!!!!

American Country music is alright but here in Ireland we have our own Country Bands and it is a blastardised version of the American Product!!!!!! IT IS AWFUL. Bogie knows what I'm talking about. Honestly, you wouldnt bring your worst enemy to listen to this stuff (crimes against humanity and all that!!!!)

Singers like
TR Dallas

That's too good! I remember Mr. Dolan being on television (RTE1 I think) to ring in the new millenium. Broadcast live from some hotel lounge in Kerry I believe. That was brutal.

Cal, do yourself a favour and DO NOT try and download any of the stuff we are talking about :D

OMG! This thread is too funny!

In the early 90s I listened to country music (my boyfriend only listened to country music). He taught me how to two step and the Cotton-Eyed Joe which is a lot of fun! :D

Also, Toby Keith is from my neck of the woods. :D He is from Moore, OK which is just outside of OKC. I got to see him in 1996 in Alexandria, LA. He puts on a pretty good show. BTW, my husband can't stand country music, but he likes Toby Keith. My favorite song of his is, Should Have Been A Cowboy.

LOL Cal! Glad you had a good time in spite of, ah, circumstances!

I actually like country, at least for dancing... I used to line dance in the early 90s... now where is my boot scootin's smiley!? Unfortunately they don't play the kind of country I like in dance bars... Johnny Cash & alt-country like Son Volt.
