I will be an uncle around Christmas time and I told my sister that I'll make a (oil pastel) painting for the baby's room. I'm a cartoonist (well, New Media Designer by day) and I like to make some oil paintings with my cartoons (but not really cartoony).

Anyhoo-- I can't think of anything I can paint. I want this painting to be suitable for a baby as well as an adult. Meaning that I hope the picture doesn't get thrown away once the kiddie grows up ;)

My sister and her husband don't know if it will be a boy or a girl. There's no decore of the baby's room yet. It's a computer room at the moment ;)

You should paint like something that the kid will use all the time in his/her life. So that it will be like a reminder or something. ;)

Maybe something Holidayish with the year in it. It could be something sentimental they use to decorate with every Christmas. Maybe a painting of a cute little Christmas package since they're expecting a cute little package of their own. :p
By the wat... I LOVE you avatar! Totally love it! :D

Animals are always a nice thing to paint. Maybe like a momma and her baby (example: tigers, dogs, etc.).

I guess it has to be something unisex as you don't know if it's going to be a boy or a girl yet. I once did a large painting of a classic tall ship at full sail on a back drop of open sea for a little baby girl - the dominant color was blue (which is universal) and it looked brilliant up on the wall - it would've gone down well whether the receiver was a boy or girl and because it's a piece of art it's something they will hopefully become fond of, and keep forever in his/her life.
If all else fails - make something (http://www.80sxchange.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15363)

Thanks for the suggestions :) I can't do kitties because the husband is allergic to cats  I was thinking about it over the weekend and thought of a space theme. It can be universal. But I 'll still have to think some more. I did decide to wai tuntil the baby's room was finished. Or at least a colour for the paint has been chosen.

Hey, congratulations on becoming an uncle!!

Space is a cool idea. Or something that looks like your avatar should be cute too. Kids like comics and so do we grown ups! :)

Space is an excellent idea! Good for either a boy's or girl's room. I think that the painting sounds like a wonderful gift.

What kind of oil pastels do you use? I like regular (dry) pastels better myself but oil pastels blend so nicely.

Congratulations sketcher :D

I have a friend that did something of the sort for her little boy's room .. only she used the wall for her mural ;)... she painted a boat or a lighthouse scene.. can't remember .. so maybe you could do a really nice ocean scene.. with a sailboat or something.. water is always soothing.. you never grow tired of it.. but then again.. I'm a water person.. and I LOVE the ocean .. :D
