View Full Version : V. C. Andrews
I'm sure that there are more people out there besides me who were addicted to V. C. Andrews books in the 80s.;)
My first exposure to her was in sixth grade in 1980 when somehow our class talked our teacher out of doing math and science for the afternoon and got her to tell us about the book she was reading: Flowers in the Attic. I went to the library soon after and checked out this book, and from then on I was hooked through the next decade.:) It usually never took me longer than two or three days to finish one of her books.
The early V. C. Andrews books were definitely the best. Once V. C. Andrews died and they started in with the ghost writers trying to translate her outlined ideas and write in her style, the stories weren't nearly as intriguing. The whole Flowers in the Attic series and My Sweet Audrina are probably my very favorites.
i love V.C Andrews her books are very realistic. her best imho is Flowers in the Attic and the others in that series.
80sTrivia 10-15-02, 06:36 AM It's amazing how many new VC Andrews books that have been published, especially considering that the author died in 1986! VC was a bit of an enigma and no one really knows much about her. After her death, her family hired a ghost writer to continue writing novels in her style, which have raked in millions of dollars in royalties over the past few decades...
I really enjoyed her early books and I have read all of them.
The new books I am not into. They are not the same. They should have atleast found a writer with her talent.
bonjovichic 10-22-02, 09:55 PM I myself enjoy her earlier work. I personally have not been very fond of the"mini series" books they are putting out. I read them anyway because I am a book worm and read 2-3 books a week.
I know what you mean bonjovichic. I don't really like these mini-series books either, but I read them anyways just because I think her books have become a habit.
I wonder if she really had all those plot outlines lying around like the estate claims, or if they're just trying to pump the name recognition factor.
I found this mini-biography of V.C. Andrews:
V. C. Andrews was the author of a number of books, including "Flowers in the Attic". After her death in 1986, a ghostwriter she was working with (novelist Andrew Neiderman) continued the series' she had begun. The last book she wrote was "Fallen Hearts" (part of the Casteel series), and since then, Neiderman has been writing the books and putting them out under her name. During her life, the wheelchair-bound V. C. never wed. Her books were her children.
I didn't realize the new writer was a guy. Even if he was working with her before she died, he definitely does not have her same writing talent.
WOW I just read this. He is a man? No wonder the books are not good
I love her books..she is my all time favorite author! I have most of her books in paperback and actually they are gettiing a bit worn out becuase I read and reread them..lol...I am always gettign newer copies of them. I have the whole Dollanganger series(Flowers in the Attic), The whole Casteel series(Heaven), the whole Landry series(Ruby), My Sweet Audrina, the whole Cutler series(Dawn) , WildFLowers(all in one book) The whole series that starts with the book Melody(forget the series name) see..told ya I was addicted..LMAO! Matter of fact I am reading Petals On The Wind now(second book, Dollanganger series) I love it that most of her stories are in 4 and 5 book series!
Lord Jay 5-25-04, 09:17 AM I enjoyed the Flowers of the Attic series when I was a young teen, much to my moms displeasure..hehe. It was some fine reading although I was very disappointed with the movie...

BrandyBlue 5-25-04, 10:32 AM I read a few, but they are all the same--a miserable childhood, somewhere in the middle some kind of incest happens, and then a hook into the next book with another kid going through a miserable childhood. I know that these books were probably loosely autobiographical but it's sort of like VC never quite worked out what was haunting her when she was alive, and in her death people are exploiting that pain.
I will say that the first couple of books that I read were cathartic for me but after that it was like gashing the same wound over and over again
SouthernImage 5-25-04, 12:19 PM I was addicted to her books. I know there are quite a few out now that I haven't read. BUT thats because I knew she passed away and felt no one could write like her.

:yesnod: I agree, ABC.
JennyJenny 11-02-04, 08:56 AM I read the first several series of books, Flowers in the Attic, Ruby, Melody, Heaven. After a while the basic storylines seem very similar to the others. Good reading though.
Rhiannon73 2-01-05, 06:43 PM I just love the Casteel series! I've read some of the newer ones and don't really enjoy them. I did like the Willow series though.
bookmistres4ever 2-03-05, 02:50 AM I loved Flowers in the Attic and Petals on the Wind back in the 80s and liked them both very much. I started reading If there be thorns and couldn't really get into it, so I quit reading them. I probably should go back and try to read them again sometime.
