I'm looking for a used paperback copy of The Whim of the Dragon by Pamela Dean (Dyer-Bennet). (released 1989 by Ace Fantasy)

The series is about a group of kids who have an elaborate fantasy role-playing game in the summers-- one day they find a strange sword in a neighbor's yard, and are transported into their own fantasy country. Cool story, very much like "The Pathways of Desire" by Ursula LeGuin. (in The Compass Rose)

I have the first two books... I read the first one, The Secret Country, in sixth grade, and never knew it was a trilogy until a few months ago! The first book just sort of stops in mid-paragraph, so I've been tortured for 15 years waiting to find out what happens http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif

I've got my eye on eBay, Amazon Zshops, Powells.com, (awesome used book site... just got a hardcover copy of Atlas of Pern there!) and other used book sites, but nobody seems to want to sell it for less than $30. $20 is my limit for any used paperback unless it's signed, or super-duper-rare. *g*

If anyone sees it, let me know!

Mary, I don't know of the series your talking about but it does sound cool. I read a series in high school, Nine Princes in Amber, (for college prep english, you know, choose an author critique the book and then after 5-6 books critique the author, yadda yadda yadda) written by Roger Zelazny that might be right up your alley by the sounds of it. It's a 10 book series spanning 20+ years (1970-1991) imagine waiting to finish that series! In fact, I thought it was so good, I continued to read the series, after I graduated ('89), to the end. Here are some reviews for the Amber series on Amazon (bottom of the page)
The Great Book of Amber : The Complete Amber Chronicles, 1-10 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0380809060/ref=ase_rogerzelaznypageA/107-2446464-4066144)

I'll keep an eye out for the book your looking for, I know how frustrating it can be.

Brent

I've read The Chronicles of Amber... I enjoyed them! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif My husband was in the Sci-Fi Book Club, and he has all the collections.

My favorite fantasy series are The Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey (new book just came out!) and The Belgariad/The Malloreon by David Eddings.

Thanks for the help! I got the second volume from http://www.powells.com using their used book search... a great service.

I know this thread's way, way old... but I wanted to make it known that I did finally find Whim of the Dragon on Amazon Marketplace. Whoo! Along with the Seven Citadels series by Geraldine Harris, all of which I managed to find in the past year, I've almost found all the series I've been searching for all these years.

One more I'm having trouble digging up... the sequels to Birth of the Firebringer by Meredith Ann Pierce. (series about unicorns) The sequels' titles are Dark Moon and Son of the Summer Stars. If anyone sees these anywhere for less than $50 a piece, let me know. :D

...Whatever happened to Urethane? *sigh*
