View Full Version : Where are they?? djromie 9-15-02, 07:33 PM Musical Youth? Dj yella? Tom Tom Club? Iluvthe80s 9-15-02, 07:43 PM DJ Yella: DJ Yella (the DJ was back in his name) expressed interest in the project, but was not approached for the various interviews and live appearances that MC Ren, Ice Cube, and Dr. Dre were making. Still being a good sport about it, he appeared in a video with the old members and agreed to work on their reunion album after their 2000 Up in Smoke tour. Although Yella wasn't brought out on tour with the group, he anxiously awaited the reunion until December of that year. Dre bowed out of the project because he was disappointed with the results, while Ice Cube was due to start filming Ghosts of Mars with only a few songs recorded. With the reunion scrapped, Yella and Big Man decided to try their hand at other industries. Yella had produced the occasional porn film throughout the '90s under the pseudonym Tha Kidd, but in spring of 2001, he announced his intentions to bring his small-time Lo-Key Productions to the Internet and release his own pornography, known as DJ Yella's Chronic Volumes, through his website. His approach was to blend hip-hop music and "reality based" situations into a more mature version of pornography, while continuing to champion the ill-fated N.W.A. reunion. Although Yella managed to produce a significant amount of porn, the website closed down and he dropped out of the spotlight again in 2001. — Bradley Torreano (from allmusic.com) Tom Tom Club: When The Talking Heads broke up in late 1991, Tom Tom Club became Frantz and Weymouth's main outlet. They released Dark Sneak Love Action in 1992 and eight years later they issued The Good, The Bad, and the Funky. — William Ruhlmann (from allmusic.com) As far as Musical Youth, I couldn't find what happened to them. Big Tone 9-16-02, 11:29 AM There was a programme on TV here in the UK about a year ago that had a spot on Musical Youth. It was all quite sad I'm afraid, I think a couple of them got into drugs, one was murdered (or committed murder). A lot of jail time etc. Oh, and I think one became a social worker. Eitherway, your unlikely to see them in a comeback tour... I could be entirely wrong and dreamt this but hopefully someone else out there can re-assure me.. Tone Jasper 9-16-02, 05:38 PM Someone told me once that the singer from Musical Youth was the same guy in Inner Circle, of BAD BOYS (the COPS theme song) Fame. Okay, I got off my a$$ and actually looked up Musical Youth, and that info is incorrect. Here is the deal: The success that was predicted for teenaged ska and reggae band Musical Youth when their pro-marijuana single "Pass the Dutchie" sold more than four million copies in 1982 failed to come to fruition. Within three years, the band, who featured vocalist Dennis Seaton, keyboardist Michael Grant, and the Waite brothers -- Patrick, who played bass and Freddie Junior, who played drums -- had gone their separate ways. Although a reunion was conceived in 1993, the premature death of Patrick Waite at the age of 30 while in police custody put an end to these plans. The members of Musical Youth were attending Duddleston Manor School in Birmingham when the group was formed by the Waite brothers and their father, Frederick Waite, a former member of Jamaican vocal group the Techniques, who initially handled lead vocals. After the band signed with MCA in 1981, Dennis Seaton was recruited to sing lead. The following year, they hit gold with their single "Pass the Dutchie," based on the Mighty Diamonds' hit "Pass the Kouchie." Although the band released several subsequent singles, including "Unconditional Love" with Donna Summer and "Sixteen," they were unable to match the success of "Pass the Dutchie." The group splintered after the departure of Seaton in 1985. djromie 9-16-02, 05:46 PM NEED TO MAKE THIS LONGER: WWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!! T'Pau Michael Penn Paul Carrack DJFreez 8-27-04, 06:30 AM Maybe a little late her, but you'll find everything you want to know about Musical Youth online soon at www.musicalyouth.net. Stories of murder or suicide aren't true, though Patrick Waite died of natural causes when awaiting a trial. Dennis Seaton and Michael Grant reformed in 2002 and recorded a new single with Pato Banton in 2003, to be released in 2004 (july). |
