I was suprised these three things were not mentioned in this forum.
Lennon being shot.
Reagan being shot.
The challenger exploding.
I remember coming home from school for the first two not knowing what happened. I was still very young and didn't relize the seriousness of those events.
With the Challenger, I was in 8th grade Science class watching as it happened and remember my teacher saying that if they ever put a teacher up again he would apply. They were all sad days. Thankfully Reagan and Brady are still alive today.

I wrote a letter to President Reagan after he got shot. Sent my condolences......and I got a package in the mail from him....I got a picture, a letter, and a mug!! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif He thanked me "from the bottom of my heart". (my uncles laughed at that. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//confused.gif )

'86: I was at home when I heard the news about the Challenger explosion.
'81: I was at school (Sykes Elementary) when I heard about Reagan's attempted assassination. The news was broadcast over the school's intercom.
