View Full Version : you first heard that Randy Rhoads had died?
VioletFoxx 12-02-01, 08:48 AM I know this was already done on the old board cuz that's how I found this place, but as we near the 20th anniversary of his death (and that his birthday is in 4 days), I'd like to hear from you guys and gals out there.
March 19, 1982 is forever emblazoned on my brain. It's like yesterday to me. I was 11 yrs old and at a friend's slumber party. It was early morning and I woke up for no reason. The local rock station was just relaying the news and I started to cry my eyes out. Now, I was in Catholic school at the time, so my only notion of Ozzy was that he was Satan himself. I'd never heard any of his music and had no reason to be crying. I remember praying to God to take this poor guy's soul to heaven, even though he played the Devil's music. Not two years later, while flipping through a Hit Parader mag, I saw a last interview tribute and it hit me: "This is the guy I cried for! OMG! He's so damn cute!" Hey, I was 13. So I went out and bought Blizzard of Oz and Diary of a Madman and fell in love. I can't believe we are coming up on 20 years without one of the best musicians to ever walk this earth. His talent was so huge and we barely got to taste it. Damn I miss him. Alright, that's my story. Hope to read some of yours soon.
Caligula 12-02-01, 10:32 AM ah someone told me while I was waiting for the school bus
Iluvthe80s 12-02-01, 12:28 PM Actually, I didn't hear that he had died till about 3 years later. Back when he passed on, I hadn't discovered metal yet. I was just listening to pop and new wave. A kid in school had told me about it.
Why do they always take the very talented ones from us before their time? :(

I take it you're from Texas, VioletFoxx? If you are, what part?
VioletFoxx 12-02-01, 10:27 PM Hey Stacy, I'm about 3 hours south of ya in Corpus Christi.
Iluvthe80s 12-02-01, 10:30 PM Cool! I have been down there a few times. I go to Padre Island sometimes.
VioletFoxx 12-02-01, 10:54 PM Padre's pretty cool, but you can't beat Port Aransas for a way groovy spring break. We used to hit it every year in high school and spend the week on the beach with whoever we met that was cool. I do miss those bonfires, kickin' back, hiding your beer from the cops, and blasting out some metal from the jam box. Uh-oh, I'm gettin' too nostalgic here. LOL!
Iluvthe80s 12-02-01, 10:59 PM I haven't been to Port Aransas since about the mid eighties. I used to go with my parents there on vacation and we sometimes would stay at Nueces County Park sometimes. Last time I went to Corpus was in '97.
VioletFoxx 12-02-01, 11:08 PM Sadly, you aren't missing much. This town kinda sucks, but you make do. Maybe that's why I'm online so much. :p
Iluvthe80s 12-02-01, 11:11 PM Austin isn't much better either. It is more of a business town than anything. Nothing really to do here. You have to go to San Antonio or Dallas to really have anything to do.
VioletFoxx 12-02-01, 11:43 PM Really? Last time I was in Austin, about two years ago, we had a blast. SA and Dallas do have their merits though. I went to school (college) in Denton for awhile and we'd go into Dallas all the time. I'm planning on moving up to Dallas sometime next year as a matter of fact. Can't wait. Finally a town with real concerts!
My older brother was taking me to school when they announced that Randy Rhodes was killed in a plane crash. I was just getting into metal at that point and the most frequently played tape was Ozzy's "Blizzard of Ozz". I was an Ozzy freak and was in shock by the news. We skipped school that day and my hoodlum days had begun.
I lived in Round Rock (just north of Austin) for six years. I had a blast living there and going into Austin. I bet I can still find trouble to get into there. I don't make it to the coast anymore (even though I was born there). But, I go to Austin a couple times a year and I am in Fort Worth at least once a month. There is so much to do up there.
VioletFoxx 12-05-01, 06:06 AM Nice to meet you annual_mayhem! I hear you about the skipping school and all. We did that when Cliff Burton died. We all showed up wearing black armbands, looked around, and said "What the Hell are we doing here? Let's go grab a beer and mourn." Such a fine example to set I'm sure, but hey, that's how it was for us.
Glad to meet another Texan. We're taking over! LOL!
I was 12 in 1982, so I was most likely playing with my Barbies.
I think I was about 16 when I first heard this? That's about the time my friend introduced me to Ozzy. :)
Therrall 6-06-02, 06:17 PM Unfortunately I don't remember where I was or what I was doing when I heard the news.:(
I just thought I'd *Bump* this Thread up since a new Thread has been started about this subject :)
Tydestra 6-06-02, 10:53 PM March 19, '82... I was a month, a couple of weeks and a handful of days from being born.
I found out about Randy when I was ten, the age I found out about Ozzy's music.
I was in middle school. I heard the "cool" kids talking about it the next day.
