View Full Version : Alright Punks!!
djpromogirl1 2-20-01, 03:45 PM Here we go!! Now that I have been repremanded thusly from the fearless site leader, Sal, on the releavance of my "where were you" Nirvana post I will now stir that up again.
Where were you the first time you heard the song that would bring the hair band empire crumbling down: "Smells Like Teen Spirit"?
Do you remember the first time you saw the video that would kill The Headbanger's Ball: Pearl Jam, "Evenflow"? Note: Ironic that hiphop and boy-girl bands in turn killed grunge.
Now, put the can of aqua net and lighter down! I'm not sticking up for grunge, I am just posing a friggin' question 80's folk. Let's play nice.

Oh, and this is my favorite tune quote just for you Sal and Blazegirl:
Let's educate the masses, we'll burn the white house down! Speak the word...
Sal Collaziano 2-20-01, 06:56 PM Hi Ava! Well, let me think. I was first with my little Brother - I believe in HIS car when I heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit". I didn't like it! hehe I don't think I've ever seen "Evenflow". But now I know it killed the "Headbangers Ball". Damnit!! It's not a bad song, anyways... I've learned to like old Nirvana as well...

Sunlover 3-11-01, 01:59 PM I can't remember just when I heard the grunge songs for the first time. I do know that I wish I was in high school/college during that era than in the 80's (probably not the most popular view here, but oh well). However, as a fresh out of college person trying to make her way in the professional world, greasy hair and oversized comfy clothes did not fit the bill.
I like 80's music. I like grunge music. I like the current boy-bands, teen queens, etc. I like some of Eminem's stuff although I don't really care for athe man himself. Other than very heavy kill-the-bitch rap, I don't think there is any type of music I don't like.
Purple Velvet Bohemian 3-23-01, 05:11 PM Well, I don't know exactly, but I do remember that is was 1991 because my mom was taking classes, and we would hear that song on the way home. Nirvana was the band that killed the 80's.

Damn that Nirvana!!
Yes... they killed "good" music and made it acceptable to be a slob and stroke your guitar without a care of how it may sound...
I do remember when they first came out.. I was like "who are these jerks?" Then... more jerks came out, and none of them were talented musicians...

Yep! This is definitely the age of the teeny bopper. I'll remind you of two groups from the 80's that also were in that category - Menudo and New Edition. An 80's resurgence may be closer than we think.
On another note, I thought Grunge had been dead for years. Am I wrong?

lazy boy 3-27-01, 02:46 PM Gottra agree with Shakey - I too thought grunge had been dead for years. It seemed to metamorphisize into a more slickly produced, mainstream sound shortly after Nirvana ended, then went away completely when that "Alternative" crap took over. Alternative being defined as "Gee, I'm not depressed enough, let me turn on the radio and listen to college students whine about their frellin' problems." http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif
As far as quality, hey, I practiced guitar for many years trying to learn Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads songs. I learned everything off Nevermind in the space of a couple of hours. Just crank up the distortion and flanger and delay high enough and you too can make three notes sound really cool!
Roemello 3-27-01, 04:42 PM I never thought of New Edition as part of that category...I actually like some of their music. I always thought of the dawning of that accursid boy band crap as starting with the New Kids on the Block http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//yucky.gif

outofplacechild 4-16-01, 07:32 PM I don't know where I was when Nirvana hurt the 80s, but I do know that I don't like them. I love 80s and early 90s metal. Wild guys, hot chicks, slamming chords, good times...Nirvana and those alternative people broke all that.
In my opinion, after Nirvana, rock headed straightfirst into a downward spiral. Nowadays, we have Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, Crazytown and a slew of others that just don't rock at all.
I want my hair metal back, and I don't want it made fun of by the mass media either!
Okay, I'll confess...I like New Kids On The Block, along with New Edition. It's today's boy bands that I can't stomach.
Today's music sucks to the max!

Don't kill me, but I've always liked Nirvana. I owned "Bleach" before "Nevermind" came out, and I was somewhere between shocked and insulted when they hit the big time with "Smells like Teen Spirit." Still, I was on the bus on the way home from school when my friend Kristy handed me a tape and said, "I copied the new Nirvana for you!" and I popped it in my Walkman. I still have that tape: Kristy always invested in good quality blank tapes. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif
I was never completely wild about their music, (I was really into early R.E.M. at the time... still am) but I definitely got attached to Nirvana.
Junior year, (1991-92) my hair turned fluorescent orange from a bad Sun-In job + well water, and from behind, I looked exactly like Kurt Cobain until it grew out. (I'd like to think I was better looking from the front! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif ) My boyfriend and his best friend were crazy about my hair, and they both called me Kurt, and slobbered all over me. It was so embarrassing.
My boyfriend's best friend died in a car accident senior year, and Kurt Cobain shot himself about a year later. My ex called my dorm room in the middle of the night and told me Kurt Cobain was dead, so I wouldn't have to hear it on the radio first.
"Kurt's gone-- I guess it's just you and me now," he said. Ever since, I haven't been able to listen to "All Apologies" without getting teary-eyed.
It's even worse when my local radio station does the back-to-back Kurt'n'Courtney and plays "All Apologies," then "Malibu." I'm convinced they do it just to torture me!
I never liked Soundgarden or Pearl Jam very much. "Black Hole Sun" still makes me ill, because I had it stuck in my head for most of 1993-1996. Eek.
Still, the Weird Al "Smells like Nirvana" video was absolute genius. I nearly died laughing the first time I saw it, though it was clearly also aimed at me, as a brainless teenage grunge fan.
Having a sentimental interest in grunge in no way prevents me from wishing 80s pop would come back and save us from the boy bands and the Limp Bizkit clones. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif

Yikes... a grunge fan.. sorry Mary C but grunge is what killed our beloved decade.. so I have a hard time agreeing with you... I also remember when I heard that Cobain killed himself... I felt bad that his daughter and wife would have to suffer through that... but I have to say.. I personally didn't mourn the end of his band because I thought that he had zero talent...
And he dressed like a slob... had no style to him at all.. and (again I am sorry).. his hair was the stringiest, dirtiest mop that I have ever laid eyes on..

Um, it seems about every 6 or 7 posts that Tinajo writes, makes me love her more!ANYHOW:
Dont blame grunge, per se, blame MTV. They single handedly decide who will and who will not become famous. Do you really think that BECK is a bonafide musical genious? Well, the way MTV swings from his nuts you would.
I am a HUGE metal fan, and love the cheesey, hair bands the most. But, some of the grunge movement was good. Every Alice in Chains CD is a must own. They are one of the most talented, and underrated groups to come out in the early 90s. Too bad they get lumped in with all those other less talented bands. And if you think about it there was only about 4 or 5 bands in that whole area/timeframe that really had an impact. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, AIC, Nirvana and perhaps Candlebox are the only ones I can think of.
I miss the 80s, but Kurt Cobain wasnt the reason they died, the media killed the 80s.

djdaffy1227 5-03-01, 01:47 PM I hate it when people compare Curt Cobain with John Lennon. There is NO comparison. John Lennon was a genius and Curt just happened to be at the right place at the right time. John could play more than three chords, Curt could not. You could understand John's lyrics, Curt's you could not. If he was the voice of 90's youth I'm glad I was a child of the 80's.
John was killed by a gunman and Curt shamefully took his own life. I know I usually defend 90's music and today's music but I did not like Nirvana. Nirvana used to mean paradise now all I think about when I hear the word is disgusting filthy Grunge styles.
In fairness to Grunge I did like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

Just browsing through the old stuff. I'd never seen this thread.
First, I have to say that reading this thread made me feel real old. I can remember seeing Dave Grohl playing here a few times in his first band Scream before he even joined Nirvana. When I read Mary C talking about listening to Nirvana on her school bus, well, I just felt plain old.
When bands like Faith No More, Scream and No Means No first started to crop up, they were playing shows to the same audience as Seven Seconds, Social Distortion and Fishbone. It was a much more exciting time than it appears by looking at what made it onto television and commercial radio. There was certainly no term like "Grunge". I think the first time I heard that word was on a t.v. piece about a "grunge" fashion show. I giggled. Nobody took themselves too seriously. It was fun.
I am in agreement that the music of the 90s was not as appealing as the music of the 80s. But I don't think Nirvana killed anything.
Oh, and I always thought the Osmonds and the Jackson 5 were the first boy bands.lol I'm just showing my age again.
Dancingdoll1986 12-10-01, 11:35 PM Bogie, you aren't so old!! I saw both the Osmonds and the Jackson 5 at the Front Row Theater here in Cleveland when I was around 7 or 8. I had the biggest crush on Donny!!
As for Soundgarden...when I worked at the Marriott in Beachwood, I met Soundgarden. They were playing at the now defunct Coluseum. Their manager wanted one person in the front office to help him with paperwork. (Sect'y stuff.) I told him I'd be happy to do it. He tipped me well at the end, (about $500), and gave me 4 front row tix and 4 backstage passes. I was working, ( :( ) So I gave the tix to my 2 bellmen and told them to take off before I changed my mind. The band was WAY nice, and they were really down to earth. I really enjoyed meeting them.
Eh, I did buy their album, but only because I had met them. I did like their music, but then they disappeared.
battle angel alita 1-24-02, 10:40 PM I was working in a music store at the time, and I liked it until it became mainstream as for Pearl Jam I think I threw up after the hundreth time I heard it in a day. I went home and listen repeatily to Megadeth until the hurt went away.
idexpectnoless 1-25-02, 09:49 PM Jasper, You got it right. Nirvana didnt kill the 80's - MTV did. MTV always made a decision to be on the cutting edge and come up with something new. New, but not neccessarily better. I dont despise grunge. Some is very good, but most is down right depressing. The 80's music was all about having a good time grunge was not.
I do feel that newer bands like Nickelback, Lifehouse, and Creed are very good.
