View Full Version : Where were you when the San Fransisco Quake hit???
cyber_gonzo 6-10-01, 12:25 AM I remember i was living in Italy (parents in military) and I was watching it on tv at like 3am. I was the biggest A's fan. The game was a good one, then all of a sudden the screen went black. Then a report came across the TV talking about the Quake. I had an aunt and uncle in The Bay Area,so I was kind of scared for them......
80sTrivia 6-10-01, 12:52 AM I remember that I was living in Charlotte, NC and that Hurricane Hugo had just hit about two weeks previous. We had been hit unexpectedly in Charlotte by the full force of the hurricane, trees were down, the phones had been out, and power had just been restored a few days before the quake hit. I had been watching the world series from San Francisco when the quake hit live on television. I remember staying up until the wee hours of the morning watching the coverage on TV.

Iluvthe80s 6-10-01, 01:16 AM Don't remember exactly was I was doing but I was living here in Texas and remember watching the news that evening. Earthquakes are scary. I lived in San Diego for 6 months in early 1992. I experienced a small one one night and that was enough for me. It lasted about 10 to 30 seconds.
morningmyst 6-11-01, 04:12 AM I was heading to a funeral for my uncle at the time......I had another uncle who'd just passed over that bridge about 10 minutes before the quake struck! He thanks his lucky stars every day that he left work early that day!!!
Pebbles42 6-11-01, 08:25 PM I actually live about 45 min from SF so I was real close by. I was in my coach's van coming back from Cross Country practice when it hit us. Then after practice I went to my then best friend's house when a HUGE aftershock hit us in the living room. I remember watching the TV watching the bay bridge collapse and the freeway--and as bad as that freeway was that fell, just a couple of years ago TOPS they fixed that freeway in Oakland. We are still a bit scared here in California that another big one like that will hit. We had the first couple of A's vs. Giants World Series games on tape but I think missed the one when the quake hit.
ImSoooSure 6-12-01, 05:31 AM I was laying on the sofa getting ready to watch the world series. I started to go to sleep and felt the sofa shake. Earthquakes are scary. Luckily in central Calif. we haven't had any really strong ones.
djdaffy1227 6-13-01, 08:39 PM I don't remember it didn't really affect anyone in Erie. A little bit too far from San Francisco.
When was that exactly? October '89? I remember watching part of that World Series game, and then going to bed. (I was on the East Coast, and I was in eighth or ninth grade. If it had been the Red Sox, damn straight I would've stayed up!)
My mom's cousin Susie lived in San Jose at the time, (or maybe Cupertino...?) and she was trapped on the Bay Bridge for several hours. Of course, none of us back East had any idea Susie was actually trapped in it until a few days later, when she calmed down enough to call. I'm sure the sounds of our entire extended family freaking out in Maine reached almost as far as the quake itself.
I've only been to SF once, and I've never been through an earthquake... except one really funny one when I was a kid in Maine, where all the furniture started vibrating. We had this really old vibrating-massage recliner, and my grandpa was sitting in it reading the paper. The chair started moving, and he said "Hey, the chair works again!" They looked at the wall-- it wasn't plugged in. I'll never forget my grandpa's double take. What a riot.
I'm terribly frightened of earthquakes and tornadoes-- and I've never been through either one. I very calmly tape and/or board up windows for hurricanes, however. It's all what you're used to.

I was in Field Medical Service School in Camp Lejeune NC, we were in our field week. We are out in the field, pretending to be at war, when one of the instructors comes up, asks if anybody was from or had any family in SF or Oakland. We thought they were just going to tell them who had won the game. But when like 4 of the people got to leave the field, (which only happens if something is WRONG) we knew it wasnt about the game. I talked to a few friends who were stationed at the Naval Hospital in Oakland, who had to go looking for bodies on the bridge that collapsed. Bad news. Too bad things like that happens.
Caligula 6-14-01, 09:00 PM I was watching the ball game and reading some university textbook, I remember them showing how frightened Esther Canseco was and showing Jose getting her out the stands. for the first few minutes I didn't know how serious it was, I just wanted them to continue with the game
I was in college and my roommates and I had just settled down on the couch to watch the game when the TV picture went haywire. One of my roommates had a boyfriend in the San Francisco area, and she was going crazy because she couldn't reach him on the phone for several hours.

Bodean Divine 7-23-01, 09:11 PM I remember watching the World Series between S.F. Giants & Oakland A's
That earthquake hit exactly two weeks before my 11th birthday. I remember going out to collect money from my paper route and then getting back home and seeing a whole huge section of San Francisco burning down on TV! They said the quake could be felt as far away as Dallas. Wow!
Dancingdoll1986 7-27-01, 12:48 PM I remember coming home from dance class, and my mom in her room with the TV on CNN, just mesmerized. I asked what was going on, and she just pointed to the TV.
I had been in class from 5-9:30pm that night downtown with the Cleveland Ballet. I had a tape (Bananarama WOW) in, so I never heard it on the radio.
I was pretty much glued to the TV after I got home. I said prayers for all of those that had become trapped under the freeway passes. That really broke my heart...knowing that so much suffering had happened in that area. My heart still goes out to them and their families.

I was at home, watching Rescue 911 on CBS. I heard the words "This is a CBS News Special Report." Then, Dan Rather gave details about the Loma Prieta (the '89 SF quake's name).
LOSTNTHE80S 12-02-02, 11:56 AM I just had the tv on..I remember all the talk about the World Series..went to do a couple of things in another room when I came back, they had a special report on about the earthquake.
I was in basic training for the Air Force...One of my buddies had a brother that was killed when the highway collapsed.
Bon Jovi 3-17-03, 04:04 AM I think i was sitting at home Flipping The channels for something good to watch Then Came the Speical Report about the Earthquake in San Fransico.
I was getting off work with a friend, we had a cold 12pack and a joint for the nights game. While walking out to the truck we felt a tidal wave roll under our feet and then people started screaming. We thought it was pretty cool till we got home and watched the news. I didn't sleep a wink that night, it was a horrible time for SF and the surrounding Bay area.

BCRichRocker4JC 11-28-04, 10:43 PM Somewhere between Santa Barbara and Camarillo, So Cal. Was working in SB and lived in Camarillo. I remember when that happened. Very tragic.
80's fanatic 5-01-05, 01:31 AM I was hanging out with my CB radio friends at Dunkin Donuts. My sister was visiting from New Hampshire and she wanted to meet my friends. We were sitting in my husband's blazer when the radio cut in with the news. It was so sad.
Was this the one that hit during the baseball game?
I remember a college prof saying that some people were calling earthquakes Acts of God. He said "Perhaps God doesn't like baseball..." Some people got up and walked out.
Birdman660 5-03-05, 07:37 PM On BART under the bay in the Transbay tube coming home from work. We didn't know what the hell had happened, and we thought the damned train had jumped the tracks! After waiting for what seemed like an eternity, we had to walk out, again, not knowing why.
Everyone was cursing at BART thinking this was the worst BART screw-up yet. Then we reached the platform at West Oakland, which is right by the collapsed section of interchange, and had a perfect view of the downed section of Bay Bridge.
All of a sudden we knew what happened! And having to walk out of a tunnel didn't seem so bad. They eventually bussed us out of there, but we were stuck for a long time on this elevated platform. All I could think was the only thing worse would have been to be standing underneath it!
Poindexter 5-05-05, 09:20 AM I was having dinner here in KC. The phone rang and a friend of mine told me to turn on the TV. I had a really good friend that lived there at the time and of course there was no way I could get hold of her that night. Several days later I finally got in touch with her and she said she didn't even realize it was happening. She had just bought a Suzuki Samarai and wasn't used to how rough they can ride. She was out on some stretch of highway and told me she had no idea they had an earthquake until she got home.
