Geez, I have no idea when I first saw MTV. I remember the first episode being a really big deal - but I didn't watch it. I wasn't even into music at that point! I was almost 10...

Hmmm, first time seeing MTV. I believe it was late '83 while living in New Hampshire. I'm pretty sure the first video I saw was Rush's "Tom Sawyer" from the "Exit Stage Left" concert, followed by Saga's "Catwalk." Looking back, I can't believe I recorded stuff with a Quasar machine - it had individual knobs for tuning the channels and most of the time gave back grainy-looking copies! I also can't believe I paid as much as 12 bucks for a blank tape back then!

My dad was stationed in England when MTV premeired..we didn't get back to the US until 83-84. The first videos I remember seeing were, "Like a Virgin", "When Doves Cry", "Jump"..man, those were the days! I was addicted to MTV in the 6th grade..used to watch it late on Friday and Saturday nights.

I remember first noticing MTV at a party at a friends house in 1981 my senior year. I don't remember what videos were playing though. I remember thinking how strange and new it was that they were putting visual images and music together. I still do not like music videos even today. When I want to listen to music, I want to listen only and not look at images at the same time, it detracts from the music for me. MTV has better programing on now--less videos!

We first got cable at my parents house in the early 80's, so I saw MTV at home for the first time. The videos they were playing in those days were like "Electric Avenue" by Eddie Grant, "Baby Jane" by Rod Stewart and stuff. It was pretty awesome back then and I'd sit and watch videos for hours (that's when they actually played videos and none of these crappy shows). I remember having a crush on one of the VJs, Martha Quinn, who I've recently been seeing in some TV commercial (I don't remember the product). Those were definitely the MTV glory days!

My friend's grandmother actually had cable and MTV. She was preparing us a pre-Thanksgiving dinner. I remember all of us running from the table to the tv when we heard "the world premiere of The Police-Every Breath You Take". I was mesmerized and I bugged my dad until we finally got cable. MTV was awesome-back then.

I watched MTV from the first. I remember when it wasn't about money, there weren't any commercials in the beginning. They also played real rock. One of the vj's was a pinup girl, she was HOT! Today, it is a whole new station, basically IT SUX!!!

Okay this board has changed...but I remember that we got cable back on October 31, 1983 I think I was 11 or so I don't remember the first video I saw all I do remember was that I wasn't into any music at all. I never listened to the radio or anything. It didn't grab me until about 5 months later. I like old MTV where you'd only see videos, interviews, concerts and news. Now it's the real world, crap and maybe 30 minutes of videos. If it's available in your area there's a companion station to mtv called M2 they play nothing but music videos and stuff like the old Mtv used to be like. It's worth checking out if you can get it.

I can't remember when I first saw MTV, I thought it was cool! It has really changed though! The following is some MTV humor I posted on LD when folks were whining about boy bands and rock being dead. I thought it was funny, some didn't. You Decide....

....many "pop stars" actually do have decent backing bands (really, I think that's where most of the pop talent is!)....Right on with the boy band criteria Blu.
The demise of rock is to be blamed on irresponsible parents like myself. I used to love to crank the stereo while watching MTV - wearing sunglasses, drinking beer, and perhaps twist-up a fatty....Didn't you? Foolishly, I shared MTV with my children, as many of you have. Now as we conduct our "adult responsibilities" our children enjoy MTV while we slave to keep them in Nike's, Levi's, CD's, videos, blah-blah.

The vile marketing yuppies from NY (or where ever) have created an endless stream of cookie cutter pop acts and ridiculous game shows (targeted at our children) to replace our beloved Rock songs and videos.

The only way to prevent further erosion of our rock culture is to disallow MTV,VH1, and MuchMusic, viewing by any person under the age of __fill in the blank__. This restriction can be waived if R3F (Registered Rock 'n Roll Fan) certification is attained by multimedia examination.

Support me on this and WE win!!!! Oppose me and bands like Creed will be replaced by a packs of tu-tu wearing limp-wristers twirling to the sound of harps and flutes! G'Day

I remember, August 1981....my best friend Cindi and I were planted in front of the TV...we saw the rocket take off....the music theme...and then the Buggles video came on!! I think back to that and wonder why and how MTV got so off track.

We'd sit in front of the TV all day, all night, and count how many times each video was played.

I think Fish Heads won at some point.

I would go to my cousins house for 2 weeks every summer & we were NOT allowed to watch Mtv while her parents were at work, BUT of course WE DID...The videos were non-stop & the VJ's were really kewl! I actually skipped school one day just to sit around and watch MTV all day long! I think I would rather have my wisdom teeth extracted without anesthesia than to have to watch MTV for an entire day now!!! <img src="eek.gif" border="0">

I first saw MTV when it premiered. We didn't have cable at the time, but there was a cable like airwave service in the early 80's in Chicago called "On TV" that carried it. I watched video's to the point of blurriness. If it wasn't MTV, it was "Friday Night Video's", "Don Kirshners Rock Concert", "Solid Gold" and others that I can't recall at this moment.

I first saw MTV at a friend's house in 1982. I didn't have cable until May of 1984. The first night we had it I stayed up all night just to watch MTV. Before then, all I had to watch was "Friday Night Videos".

I was visiting a friend of my mum's,and she had cable. We did not,so she let me watch MTV and i saw "Video Killed the Radio Store". My favourites at the time were Madonna videos or Duran Duran(Simon LeBon was the hottest!)

I'm watching MTV right now, and they are actually paying homage to all of the 80s songs and videos that helped make MTV so popular and so hip back in the day! They are even showing some of the original promos!!! <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

Now they play crap and it is so sad. I remember when Michael Jackson's Thriller world premiered. We'd watch it at the top of every hour that it was shown. Even my mother would watch it with us...which was pretty cool (this was highly irregular, as she detested MTV and still does, BTW). Yep...that was back when Mikey looked like a young black man. Now he looks like his face is falling off...so sad.
I got all excited a few years back with the introduction of MTV2...it was promised that we would once again see VIDEOS instead of the crap on today...I'm sorry but Carson Daly gets on my last nerve!!!!! Well gang, MTV2 sucks now too. A true shame...

I remember seeing MTV back in '82 or '83. It was at a family friend's house in Rochester, NY. The first two videos I remember seeing were "Games Without Frontiers" by Peter Gabriel and "Emence Front" by The Who.
Where I'm originally from, Wellsville, NY, we didn't get MTV until October '87, and the first video I saw was "Shout" by Tears For Fears.

I remember watching MTV when i was like around 6 years old and my mother never let me.lol so I waited till they went to sleep and watched it all night. MTV nowadays is full of crapp. :)

I first saw MTV during the summer of 1984, in a motel in Jackson, New Hampshire. The video was Madonna's "Lucky Star." My hometown didn't get cable until 1987, so until then, all we had were the syndicated video shows and Friday Night Videos, which we begged our family to tape for us. (by then, cousin Robyn was 6 and I was 9, and we could operate the VCR way better than our mothers, but we still needed permission! ;) )

God, we were mesmerized. We didn't want to go to Santa's Village. We didn't want to go to the pool or play with our new model horses. We didn't even want to go to Story Land, by far our favorite kiddie White Mountains attraction.

As far as I can remember, MTV Germany aired first around 1989 here - maybe it was just feed in our cable then, I really don´t know anymore.

We had some more music video stations here, namely musicbox and Super Channel (which aired some cool music programs inbetween their program). musicbox became Tele5 (they were the first to show wrestling in Germany!) before it was transformed to Pro7. Super Channel became NBC Europe and is now called NBC Giga, a program which caters to the game freaks during the daytime and evening.

Last but not least, I didn´t watch all of those music stations actively, the tube ran in the background of my other activities. Today, I even prefer QVC or any other shopping channel to MTV or VIVA... :D

My parents didn't get cable until the mid-90s but I would babysit for our neighbors who had it in 1981, and as soon as the parents left I'd turn on MTV to at least have it on in the background so I wouldn't miss anything. The kids had to play within a reasonable distance of the TV.
Too bad MTV's such a mess today. I have an old videotape of MTV from 1985 my sister made for me and it's a treasure of what MTV once was.

I can remember the day it first premiered. Actually I think it premiered in the middle of the night or something. But I was sure to watch it the next day. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I was only 6 years old but still a big music lover. It premiered around the same time we first got cable tv.

That is exactly what I did!!! LOL! They had satellite though.....we'd sit and watch that damn tv all day!!! What a life!!! :D

We had a satellite, too, and we could also get Much Music and Music Box. Of course, satellites in those days were not the small little things that they are today... they were massive back then! The one we had was at least seven feet in diameter and at least that tall as well. You could pick up signals from Jupiter on that thing!!! ;)

I remember it being around '81 and I was a little yvie of about 14yrs. The first videos I recall watching were of "Whip It" by Devo and "Turn Me Loose" by Loverboy...Boy, did I ever have a big crush on him...with those tight leather pants...I thought he was soooo cool...Ha ha. :p

The first time I saw MTV was a week ago Thursday when I got my illegal Direct TV Sattelite hookup WHOA!!. For the record I prefer VH1 with all the Behind the Music Documentries.

Here's a little trivia, The Tv anchor man/ senior White House correspondant on CBS , John Roberts, was the original VJ on Much Music in 1984, Big eighties hair and all but was called JD Roberts back then

9:00 am and 6:00 pm Mary. I saw the video for You Were Always On My Mind by the Petshop Boys on the weekend on this show. I'd forgotten how much fun that video was. They play a lot of good stuff so I hope you catch it.
