View Full Version : 80's One Hit Wonders
Does anyone remember a song called Gone With the Wind ? I can't remember who did it. It was a male. The record cover had a picture of two chariots a bit like the London Hippodrome logo. It's driving me mad so if anyone knows I would be truly grateful.
Regards
Dave
Do you remember what year it came out? I can recall two with the title "Gone With the Wind."
1982 - Peter Noone
1985 - Robin Gibb
You might want to check one of these out. Good luck.

Hi Tinajo
Dexys Midnight Runners had another hit here in Europe with 'Jackie Wilson Said', not as big as 'Come On Eileen', but a hit nonetheless.
Soft Cell also had a string of songs apart from 'Tainted Love', but again, that was here in Europe!
Yeah... I have never heard any other songs by the two bands.. you're right... must have just been in Europe...

cultleader 4-14-01, 11:55 AM How about Maddness,I know in europe they're like gods but I think they only charted with "Our House"here in the states.
------------------
"Sweet lovely death, just waiting for your breath, come sweet death one last caress"-"Last Caress"by the Misfits
SurlyOne 4-14-01, 01:22 PM Actually, Madness also charted with "It Must Be Love" (#33, 1983). Obviously, not as big of a hit, so calling them a "one hit wonder" in the states is technically correct. However, they were all over MTV with their videos for "House Of Fun," "One Step Beyond" and "The Sun And The Rain."
Roemello 4-14-01, 07:13 PM One Step Beyond was a funky tune....maybe not 'hit' material, but it was pretty funky none-the-less http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif

Just thought of this for some reason. "Wild World" by Max E. Priest or Maxie Priest. He sings "Oh baby baby it's a wild world, I'll always remember you like a child girrrlll". I think this was a remake. He may have had one other song out but it didn't go far.
------------------
You'd like to think so, wouldn't you?
Silveradocruiser 4-26-01, 02:56 PM 'Maxi Priest' also had a hit with 'Close to You'!
'Wild world' was originally by Cat Stevens?...I think...http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//confused.gif 'Mr Big also did a cover of it in the early 90s!http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

H@ns (OK, so I AM the bad guy from Die Hard!)
Well, at least I got his name right, sunce I cann't speel eet rite.http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif Thanx. His second song wasn't very popular around here. There was a song by Poco around the same time, and oddly enough, I remember the band's name and not the song. What could it be, Silverado?
------------------
You'd like to think so, wouldn't you?
djdaffy1227 4-26-01, 08:57 PM Eddie Murphy went top 40 again in 1989 with "Put your mouth on me" and Don Johnson went top 40 again with "till I loved you" a duet with of all people Barbra Streisand.
I have a book of one hit wonders and their definition is a band with only one top 40 hit. Meaning Madness is technically not a one hit wonder. However, I don't anyone who remebers that second song.
Synch charted twice with "where are you now" once in 1986 and again in 1989. The second time was credited to Jimmy Harnen and Synch. Moving Pictures did the same with "what about me" in 1983 and 1989. "Into the night" by Benny Mardones did the same in 1980 and 1989. I guess that makes them one hit wonders twice.
Silveradocruiser 4-27-01, 08:21 AM How about Paul Owen's 'My favourite waste of time'??? Anyone remember??http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif

Silveradocruiser,
You are wicked!!! It was actually Owen Paul but no worries on that front, I hoped I'd never hear that tune again but now I'm going to sing it all day!!!

How about "She Blinded Me With Science" by (I think) Thomas Dolby.
P.S. I know that Kate Bush was (or is) very popular in the UK. Did she ever have any hits that made the US charts?
WutheringHeights 4-28-01, 10:56 PM HAHA I played Paul Owen's - My Favourite Waste Of Time the other night when I dragged out my old vinyl collection!! I thought nobody else knew that song http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif
Anyone remember these?
E.G. Daily - Mind Over Matter
Hayzee Fantayzee - Shiny Shiny
Dollar - Mirror Mirror Mon A'Mour
I dont recall these artists ever following up the hits with any other songs in Australia...but I could be wrong http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

80sTrivia 4-30-01, 04:50 PM I do indeed remember E.D. Daley's song, "Mind Over Matter"... by the way, she was also in the movie Pee-Wee's Playhouse, and she played Pee-Wee's "girlfriend"
Kate Bush had some minor hits in the US, including "Running Up That Hill", and "Cloudbursting"...

I knew 16 of the songs if that means anything. I'm assuming this the one hit wonders British definition. There only hit went to #1 as opposed to the US definition of having only one top 40 song. Thanks for the list.
What about "Perfect Way" by Scritti Politti. I don't know if it was No. 1, but I know it was a hit for them. I was loooking through bargain bin cds the other day and saw the song "I wish you could have turned my head (And left my heart alone)". Scared my hubby a little because I remembered the whole chorus. It's from 1986. A hit or no, djdaffy?
djdaffy1227 5-14-01, 10:31 AM The only other hot 100 songs they had were "Wood beez (pray like Aretha Franklin)" #91 in 1986 and "Boom! There she was" featuring Roger Troutman. It went to #53 in 1988. They had 14 songs chart in England and I don't see that song there either. My last chance is to look in my book of Album rock and modern rock charts. I don't have that here with me right now, I keep it at the radio station, but I will check next time I'm there.
wavemaster 7-04-01, 07:01 AM I´m personally missing Boytronic´s "You"...was a big hit in Germany, but after that, they never appeared in high chart positions again, except for the remakes in ´87 and ´91.
If anyone cares, I might research the German One-Hit-Wonders...and before I forget, there was a Swedish band named themselves like that. Appeared on the Energy Rekords compilation "I Sometimes Wish I Was Famous" with covers of Depeche Mode - and those guys were surely no One-Hit-Wonders... <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">
djdaffy1227 7-04-01, 11:13 AM I'd love to see them!
wavemaster 7-04-01, 09:30 PM Since at least one have asked...here is the first part of the German One-Hit-Wonders.
I will feature them loosely, as time allows - besides, I´m quite lazy... <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">
Here we go...

80sSmurf 7-08-01, 05:39 PM I'm going out on a limb here...I haven't seen "Hey you (the Rocksteady Crew)" by the "duh" Rockstady Crew in this topic.
Isn't that a 1-hitter too? I know it was in Denmark along with a bunch of other hip-hop/EB/break-music...
wavemaster 7-09-01, 03:06 AM Part II of the German One-Hit-Wonder mayhem... <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
These lists are featuring ALL artists of this kind, although I know that there are several which wouldn´t meet "our" understandings of 80s music.
But where to draw the line? So, I will feature all of them. And, on these lists you can also see how much the industry has changed the charts and featured artists - I don´t think that any of todays artists are capable to hold a Top 20-position over a span of months like in the (early) eighties...

djdaffy1227 7-09-01, 12:33 PM Great list Wavemaster. Do you have a book of German charts that you used to compile that list? If so I'd love to know where I can get a copy. That's what I love about music charts throughout the world. Many of the artists were huge over here like Kim Carnes, Sheena Easton, Dr. Hook, Spinners, John Lennon, Earth Wind and Fire and others. Thanks again!

Excellent info Wavemaster <img src="smile.gif" border="0"> I'm impressed with the German charts. Reminds me of lots o' things I thought I'd forgotten.
I wonder if Marianne Faithful charted in another country with two tracks from Broken English? I always thought that the title track was the most popular one. The Ballad of Lucy Jordan was on the soundtrack to Montenegro - did that have anything to do with its popularity in Germany?
Anyone with the balls (pun intended) to put Frank Zappa's Bobby Brown into the charts is okay in my books. I think if they played it on the radio here there would only be five or six words that weren't beeped out.
Great work Wavemaster. Give us more (or refer us to online charts if you want to save yourself from all the typing <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0"> )
wavemaster 7-10-01, 02:38 AM Thanks Bogie... <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
Actually, it´s kinda funny to track down these artists. A ton of memories are coming back again, even on those German "Schlager"-tunes which made us puke as teens (and still making me hurl whenever I catch it on the radio - sad fact that the best traffic announcements are on those stations playing this crap 24-24... <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0"> ).
I will reveal the source at the end of it - otherwise, where would be the thrill and the fun, when you know it before? <img src="wink.gif" border="0">
Frank Zappa...in my opinion "Bobby Brown" made this high chart position only due to the fact that most of the German radio stations didn´t bother to care for the lyrics that much. Frank was a highly regarded artist, so why should be anything wrong with it, huh? Same goes for Lou Reeds "Walk On The Wild Side" - another decade, same situation...
During the midst of the 80s, especially songs with German lyrics which doesn´t met the mercy of the almighty ´ethic watchers´ had some serious problems getting airplay on radio and TV. Among them were Falcos "Jeanny Part I" and Bruce&Bongos "Geil", but some lyrics with English content were also banned or only aired in a clean version, e.g. "Love Missile F1-11" by Sigue Sigue Sputnik (I was always asking myself what were the problems with the line ´Mondo Teeno is giving head´...aah, the innocence of not understanding <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0"> ).
Marianne Faithful...I can only presume that this was her first recording, and with that background of her affair with Mick Jagger I think she had a kind of popularity bonus. As far as I can remember, the critics weren´t too delighted...
Hmm....don't think it's been mentioned...what about Captain Sensible and "Wot"? Don't tell me he (they??) made more songs.... <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">
Kristina
Oh b****r! Captain Sensible had another (UK)hit in 1982 with "Happy Talk" <img src="rolleyes.gif" border="0">
Eeek....two-hit wonder then?? <img src="tongue.gif" border="0">
Kristina
wavemaster 7-10-01, 05:56 AM Part III...will it ever stop? <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">
Now come the years I really fear...the 80s were a good place for One-Hit-Wonders, especially when the Neue Deutsche Welle-phenomenon started to hit the charts in 1982. Everyone who could at least hold a microphone could also be sure of a chart notification, but luckily not everyone made it into the Top 20.
The early 80s contained a lot of really cheesy German stuff, too - the best example is "Olé Espana". Imagine a bunch of soccerplayers in a studio...the result was very far away from the collaboration of New Order and the English soccer team. <img src="tongue.gif" border="0">
No longer talks...off we go...

Aaaaaahhhhh. I'm gonna get you back for this Wavemaster.
If I end up singing "John Wayne is Big Leggy" for the rest of the day, I'm going to be ill. <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">
I had completely forgotten about that song. I remember them doing some silly cowboy-stomping dance on Top of the Pops. Yuck! <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">
Great work with the charts though. Very interesting to see foreign charts.
wavemaster 7-10-01, 03:38 PM He he hee...Boogie, I bet that there are more songs upcoming which gonna make you loose your mind... <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">
After this, I will sign up myself for Overachievers Anonymus...but really, this is sheer fun for me.
1983 - the year the Neue Deutsche Welle was as successful as being prone for a sudden death. The charts were crowded with obscure band which made it only to the lower chart regions, maybe for one or two weeks before they were bailed out again. Quantity ruled over quality - and soon the listeners were fed up with the NDW.
Other styles were rising on the horizon, Electro and Italo Disco. While Electro was a mixture of R´n´B and electronic sounds like Kraftwerk and soon caused dozens of teens to move irratically (to the next chiropractic... <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0"> ) to the Beats which became worldwide known as Breakdance, Italo Disco was the clever invention of Italian DJs who mixed their kind of traditional pop (Canzone) with the wave sound from Britain and Germany, adding a clever shoot of Disco to produce this appealing sound.
Get ready for this...Part IV:

Soft Cell also had another hit with Where Did Our Love Go.
shaun mccoy 7-15-01, 07:58 PM Coming from England and reading through the 'one hit wonder' posts really made me smile because nearly all of the British artists named had multiple U.K. hits.
Off the top of my head, does anyone recall a band called 'Swing out Sister'? They were a British band who did have a 'one hit wonder' with a song called 'Breakout' - now that was an 80's classic.
MotleyLou 7-16-01, 12:27 AM Please Help...
There's an eighties music video that my friends and I vaguely remember. All we can remember is like one line from the song.
It was kinda a funny/joke video MTV used to show... the lyric we sort of remember is "Catch you later baby, I'm going out with the boys"...or possibly "See you later baby, I'm going out with the boys". Now what sticks out is, when the guy in the vid sings the a high note, he starts to cough.
Please, I know the info I have is very vague...but any help what so ever would be great...even if anyone can direct me to what post on the message board would be better for me to post this. (this was my first posting).
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Lou

Sara Smile 2-13-02, 01:46 PM WOW. There are so many of those songs I know, but forgot about.
Wavemaster, you are right about Boytronic. That song You is still very good. I love that and the one called Hypnotic Tango. I don't know who did that one.
COOL BREEZE 2-18-02, 10:48 PM WOW! YOU SEEM TO BE THE RESIDENT EXPERT!
HERE'S A FEW MORE WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THEM?
ALICIA"BABY TALK"
YELLO"OH YEAH"
PLANET P"WHY ME?"
SNIFF N' THE TEARS"DRIVER'S SEAT"
KINGS"SWITCH INTO GLIDE"

"THIS IS PURE SNOW!..DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT THE STREET VALUE OF THIS MOUNTAIN IS?"
djdaffy1227 2-19-02, 01:36 PM hey COOLBREEZE!
I'm flattered that you say I'm an "Expert" I just consider myself to be picky when it comes to charts
As for the artists you asked for:
"Baby talk"-Alisha. A fine R&B tune. The song only went to #68 on the pop charts. She was a teen in 1986 when this song came out. Her only other two charted singles were:
"Into my secret" #97 1987
"Bounce back" #54 1990
"Oh yeah"-Yello This was their only charted single on the pop charts going to #51 in 1987. The song was featured in "Ferris Bueller's day off" and "the secret of my success". They have a greatest hits collection called "Essential Yello". I reccomend it highly! They were more popular on the dance charts.
"Why me"-Planet P. Another great song! they only went to #64 in 1983 with this gem. Toney Carey (of Deep Purple and later solo works) was the lead singer.
"Driver's seat"-Sniff 'N' The Tears. They are a one hit wonder, however, they are a one hit wonder of the 70's. This song went to #15 in 1979. Yet another great song. My listing was only for the 80's.
"Switchin' to glide"-The Kings. This was a big Canadian hit. I still hear it on the Canadian rock station. They were from Toronto. This song, coupled with the b-side "The beat goes on" (not the Sonny and Cher song) only went to #43 in 1980 on the US charts.
I hope this helps :)
COOL BREEZE 2-19-02, 05:41 PM Hey ! Thanks for the info!
I love "Driver's Seat" and "Switch into glide"!
"Oh Yeah" featured in a very memorable scene in "She's Out of Control" when Tony Danza calls his daughter Ami Dolenz and she comes running out of the ocean in her bathing suit! OOOOHHHH YYEEEEAAAHH!!!!
Thanks Again!
COOL BREEZE

Me too DJDaffy. Thanks for posting your one-hit wonder list. Same to Wavemaster. You guys are the ultimate chart geeks!
Djdaffy and Wave are our list specialists at the xchange and they do a great job, and yet again with the one hit wonders list. Some of those songs I haven't thought about in years!! :)
