Ok heres the problem I have. Right now since Verizon can't get their shit together and get my DSL working, I'm stuck using this ultra high speed, super efficient, lightening fast, breakneck speed, super fast connection called dial up.

Anyway, my typical connection speed on this blazing fast 56k modem is about 6k/sec. WAY too fast for me. Maybe I should switch back to my Supra 2400. Hmmm theres a thought.

My problem is that when I download ANY file of decent size, its pretty much hogs all my bandwidth. I can bring up pages, but they are very slow.

I am looking for a method to limit each download or connection to a certain speed. Ideally I would like downloads to max out at 4K a second leaving me at least 2K for myself.

Does such a method exist?

And before anybody mentions switching over to a cable modem, I had AT&T for 1 year before they pissed me off so bad that I refuse to use them again.

Have you considered using a download manager ?? On some of them you can set how much bandwith you'll allow for a download ... Of coz I can't remember any right now since I've been on cable :D for quite some time ...

You could try any of these
http://www.getright.com/
http://gozilla.com/index.htm
http://www.amazesoft.com/

Of coz they all boast faster download, but if memory serves they allow you to specify how much bandwith can be used for each downlaod :)

Have you thought about adjusting your MTU? It can be done manually through the registry or you can use a program such as EasyMTU (http://download.com.com/3000-2155-911196.html?tag=lst-0-1) to do it. It may give you the ability to do what you want. Most people adjust it to speed up their overall connection, but it might work in your case also. It's about the only thing I can think of.

I'll give them both a shot. I'm not so sure that adjusting my outbound packet size will fix it, since I'm trying to limit the amount of outgoing packets, not the size of them. But at this point, I'm willing to try just about anything.

Dial up is painful. Like jacking off with a cheese grater. (Not that I have experience with that ;) )
