The compact disc phenomenon really started rolling like a snowball in the 1980s. The first 80s CD I bought was Julia Fordham's self titled album (1988).

Check it out!

Ok, I jumped on the CD bandwagon a bit late!

I followed up with Styx's "Cornerstone" : )

Are you asking CD or album in general? If it's CD then it would be Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi in 95 I think (i was 11 at the time). But the first album I ever got was Metallica's Black album.

Actually, the first CD I bought was not an 80's CD. It was Bob Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks." I was going through that whole granola-eating phase, during my freshman year of college. My first 80's CD was Soul II Soul....remember that group? "Back 2 Life," etc. My tastes were and are still very eclectic. When we were growing up, we listened to all kinds of music. Remember how many different styles of music there were back then? I loved metal, pop, soul, R&B, techno-- in fact, I remember the second 80's CD I bought was Yaz-- "Upstairs at Eric's." I still own it! Now everything is so compartmentalized. Kids only listen to one type of music and put down anything different. I think our generation was a lot more open-minded. At least you could understand the lyrics to most of the songs...er, unless you are talking about REM!

No idea! I think it might have been the Red Hot Chili Peppers Greatest Hits, then a few compilations. The most recent being Gary Numan's Premier Hits, Duran Duran's Decade, and Culture Club's Greatest Hits.

The first 80s CD i ever owned was The Police's Every Breath You Take compilation, then a compilation disc called | looks around for it http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//spin.gif |, "The New Wave, Pop Music of the Early Eighties". It has songs like 99 Red Balloons (American version, my favorite), Pretty in Pink and that song where the girl sings "Ma'd like you better if we slept together,". It was really cool, but of course i scratched it. The second one was the Transformers Movie soundtrack- the theme song by Lion kicks! Also, god help me, i have a "best of" Debbie Gibson CD which has a couple of songs that i liked. For a few days lol. Still its cool to own 'em! Everyone has different preferences, and if it's 80s its good no matter if i like it or not. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//ANGEL.gif

In all the confusion I forgot to mention the first 80's C.D. I bought. It was actually in the 80's. I bought Elton John's 1989 C.D. "Sleeping with the past" before I had a C.D. player. I knew I was getting one for Christmas.

By the way Sal, you should really listen to today's country because it sounds more like 80's pop then anything else today.

I got my first CD player in 1985 (I've gone through quite a few of 'em). I bought 2 CD's before I even got a player, because some electronics store in my mall carried discs for a few months, then decided to get out of it, thinking CD's would never "work." They were selling off all their discs for $9.99 (which was super cheap in 1985!)

Anyway, my first two CD's were "Phantoms" by The Fixx and "Steeltown" by Big Country. Now I have well over 4,000 CD's. Of course, I've been in the music business for a long time, so I get a ton of free stuff. But I still buy discs all the time to add to my "library." <img src="tongue.gif" border="0">

My first Sony, ahem, CD...the maxi-CD of TinTin, "I Beg Your Pardon". Was a cover version to the one of KonKan...dang, mistaken the names. Wasn´t too bad, though.
Bought it way before I owned a CD player, as I wanted to check the "new" format out.

Got my first CD-player in 1989, together with a complation called "Dance Max I" and "Backcatalogue" by Front 242.

Now, I´m owning close to 1.200 CD´s and only one is a promo presented to me - Accepts "Predator" (which was very negatively reviewed by me - since then, the company representing Accept never sent me another). Would´ve been more, but in the last two years, money was very short, so I had to cut back my habits. I also owned over 2.200 pieces of vinyl, but since a thief had taken the opportunity of me being away for a weekend, only 300 remained...

The first CD that I purchased to the best of my knowledge, was the Pet Shop Boys album, Actually, in 1987 when I was 16. The first one that was purchased for me was Tears For Fears - Songs From The Big Chair in 1985.
1987 was quite a late part of the '80's to purchase a CD, but when you get $5.00 a week pocket money and CDs are $29.95 and 12" vinyl is a very affordable, $5.99, one can see why it took me so long...

The First CD I ever got was Dire Straits, Brothers in Arms, back in 86. My cousin had just bought his first cd player (I come from a small town, it was the first cd in town and everyone came to listen to it!!!!!)

My brother still has the tour program from when Dire Straits came to Australia in 86. In it there's an ad stating Dire Straits make music perfect for the clarity of CD, or words to that effect. It's funny to think CD was SUCH a big deal back then. (Jeez you cant even buy vinyl, commercial anyway, in OZ anymore

I got my 1st CD player in '90. I went up to Camelot, (or some crazy chain that is around here...before Best Buy), and bought,

1. Aerosmith - Pump
2. Yaz - Upstairs at Eric's
3. Led Zepplin - Houses of the Holy
4. Madonna - Like a Virgin
5. Carly Simon - Coming Around Again
6. MTV's - Class of 1983

It's a broad range, and even I can't believe that my taste is so broad. I even like a bit of country now!

My very first album I bought was Kiss Destroyer...and my first cassette I bought was Barbara Streisand Guilty. (I got Kiss's album, if I am not mistaken, in 1977, and Bab's album in 1980.)

I got my first CD player in '85. and that was when CD's were just starting to get big but you still had to wait for the Record Companies to release older music on CD. New releases, you had to wait a month an a half to get the CD so I wound up buying the Cassette first, then the CD.

I got my first CD player in 1990. I bought two CDs that day... Sinead O'Connor's The Lion and the Cobra and Scritti Politti's Cupid and Psyche. I still have them both, though I mostly listed to my 80's compilation CDs.

First album I ever bought was an EP by Duran Duran called Carnival (I must say that cover has the most delicious picture of the boys on it...ahhhhh) and I remember my first cd player was given to me by my parents in 1988 when I was suffering from the Chicken Pox and I believe my first cd was Bon Jovi's New Jersey....Getting the Chicken Pox at 18 really sux! Now I am a cd and music in general-aholic.

My parents got me a CD player for Christmas-1991. But the strange part was I didn't have any CD's to play, except for some radio jingle demos CD's from JAM & TM Century (both companies are located in Dallas, TX.), and a promo for the (then-new) Tina Turner song called "Love Thing"! I have to admint that I was skepticable about switching over from vinyl and cassettes since CDs were costing anywhere from $15.99 to $17.99 back then, but after dealing with many cassette tapes that were poorly recorded, I found that I was better off using CDs for mixing tapes.

FWIW: The first 2 CD's that I've bought were Duran Duran's "Decade" (which was missing several singles like "New Moon On Monday"), and Bryan Adams's "Reckless".

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

My first CD was Living Colour. The one with Cult of Personality on it. My parents had just bought me a really cool Fisher compenent system that took up half the wall in my bedroom. Dad said it was the only one in the store that had a CD player and a turntable too. I don't have that CD anymore.

I recorded music off the radio when I was a kid (around '79/'80) cuz I couldn't afford to buy albums (since I was a kid and all). My first album (actually, a cassette) that I purchased was Men At Work. I honestly don't remember my first CD purchase but needless to say more than a few are 80's compilations.

I didn't get a CD player until my 21st in 1990. I ogt it a week before my birthday and the first CD I bought was The Smiths - Louder Than Bombs.

People had always said that the quality of CD's made it sound like it was live playing in your room. Well I put it on and it did sound like it was at a concert for a couple of days, then I realised one of the phono leads was a bit loose lol.

I got my first CD player back in 1989, and the I got four CDs. Three were 80s one was 60s. The 80s CDs were:

The Sensual World - Kate Bush
Greatest Hits Volume 2 - Olivia Newton-John
Wow! - Bananarama

The 60s one was:
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles

Tonight I just ordered the Sounds of the 80s collection from Time/Life. I already have their Sounds of the 70s collection, which I love. The Sensual World - Kate Bush Greatest Hits Volume 2 - Olivia Newton-John Wow! - Bananarama

The first cassette...oh man, it was probably like The Little Mermaid soundtrack or something.

The first CD I ever bought was Ace of Base - "The Sign" circa 1994. Remember them? I saw the sign, and it opened up my eyes...

The first 80's CD I ever bought was in 1999 and it was a compliation called "Millennium 80's New Wave Party". It's a really good CD, but my 80's music tastes have changed from new wave to rock 'n roll/hair metal. :banger:

I stocked up on the Pet Shop Boys CD's when they were re-released along with the "Bonus Discs".

My 80's collection would primarily be compilation albums (and cheapies at that) from Big Audio Dynamite, Joboxers (remember them?), Johnny Hates Jazz, Haircut 100 and so on.

My fave of the lot still remains Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Welcome to the Pleasure Dome"

When Sheena Easton's albums were all re-issued 2 years ago on the One Way label, I got most of those as well

I was a die-hard vinyl fan. My dad actually got me my first CD boombox player -- I think it was X-mas of 91 or 92. My first 80's CD that I purchased may have been New Order Substance. Otherwise my first 80's album was Adam and the Ants Kinds of the Wild Frontier.

My first CD was Paula Abdul's "Forever Your Girl". I got the CD by mistake from one of those school fundraisers. ("GREAT, how am I supposed to listen to Straight Up in my new Walkman?")
Rather than send it back, I thought I'd use my Dad's new CD player (That probably cost about a million dollars, or so) and immediately broke it. Ooops!

My first CD was Huey Lewis and The News- Sports. I bought it my freshman year of high school, fall '89. Recently, I've been going back and buying a bunch of 80s albums on vinyl that I never owned, Sports being one of them. What can I say, I was all about cassettes for the longest time! I still have that CD though, lying around with a stack of other CDs that haven't been played in forever, i.e. MTV Party To Go Vol. 1, etc. :D

On a somewhat related note, I recently bought Elvis Costello's album, My Aim is True. My understanding is that Huey played on that album. I had absolutely no idea. Pretty cool!

The first CD I purchased was Peter Gabriel's "SO" album, which I bought way back in 1986. CD's in general had a slow start to begin with in the market, but it was just starting to become popular over in the UK. Wow, okay. I *think* the first 80s CD I ever bought was probably around '89 or '90, and it was the Slaughter CD with "Up All Night" on it. What was it called?
