Gunner Girl 5-31-00, 09:21 PM Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video or when he did the 'moonwalk' on t.v.? I'm not sure if it was the Grammys or the American Music Awards.
or
Madonna perform "Like a Virgin" at the 1st MTV awards? When did you first notice or hear about Madonna?
or
"Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" by Culture Club?

Nikki_91 6-01-00, 12:14 AM Thriller..My dad had bought the album before I'd even seen the video. I lived in England at that time so one of our friends had a videotape of "Thriller"..we watched it all summer long.
Didn't hear of Madonna until after Purple Rain had been out for awhile, it was like Oct of 84..that's when we moved back to the US from England.
Culture Club..actually lived in England when they first came out, so I saw him on a british show, "Top of the Pops".

Sal Collaziano 6-01-00, 02:10 AM I don't remember but it must have been at some point when I was living with my Mother. Sometime after 6 years old and before, ahh, 3rd grade. hehe Hey, atleast I have SOME idea on THIS one. My Mother liked Madonna and Michael Jackson stuff so I heard it all the time.. I thought Thriller was a pretty damn cool song.. And Madonna's Like A Virgin and Borderline were always on as well.. Oh yeah, my little Brother liked Billie Jean..

LivinInThe80s 6-01-00, 06:17 AM I just love all these memories!
Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video was way hyped up on MTV and we sat glued to the TV to watch it the first dozen times or so. And I wasn't even a fan!
I first heard of Madonna from a classmate's very homemade-looking t-shirt with her picture on it. That was before she had her first #1! But I didn't know who she was 'til later. Speaking of Madonna, does anyone remember the scented "Material Girl" 12" single? I think there was another scented one, too...can't think right now!
Culture Club!! I was such a fan! There's a picture of me in my senior yearbook (83-84) where I dressed as Boy George for Halloween! "Boy", did I catch flak for that one from my metal-head friends! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/tongue.gif

I had the scented 12". The cassette was scented as well.
I remember opening the single up (I was a DJ at the local skating rink and was trying to expose the little grommets to stuff other than the usual radio fare, even if it was just a remixed version of that fare) and the owner of the place looked into the booth and said, "What the hell is that stench?" Thank gawd it wore off rather quickly. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/eek.gif

Was a "Madonna Wanna Be" - don't remember when I first heard her, but man, what a look!!!

Madonna was "all that" when she was the Boy Toy. A little meat on the belly, the permed hair and all the wild clothes. I had the major hots for her. She lost me somewhere near the Vogue period, when she decided that she wanted to look like Denise Austin. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/eek.gif

LivinInThe80s 6-03-00, 06:18 AM lol...mr miata...
i was working in a record store when that 12" came out & we got to smell whole boxes full of them for a while! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Both the tape and the 12" (no CDs back then) were scented with really cheap perfume. Gave me a headache for the month or two it took to air out. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/eek.gif

Dancingdoll1986 7-27-01, 01:14 PM In '83, I had gotten the Thriller ablum over the summer, and then I watched the video premire. We used to watch that over and over again, and we even learned the dance. (Sad to say, I can still do it from memory!) I got the video for Christmas that year.
Madonna...I got her first album, with Burnin' Up on it. It was obscure at the time, but I had heard it at a dance convention I went to in NY. I think that was '83.
I saw Michael moonwalk...and Madonna show her underwear...
Nowadays...no one wants to be original. Everyone wants to do what people b/f them have done.

80sTrivia 7-28-01, 10:13 PM I first saw Madonna on American Bandstand. She performed "Holiday". It was January, 1984. Dick Clark asked what her plans for the new year of 84 were and she said: "To rule the world!" I fell in love with her the moment I saw her, and I remember thinking, "She's going to be a big star." Little did I know that she would become a mega-superstar, and a Pop Culture Icon!
The first time I saw Boy George was in fall of 82, I believe. I was at home watching, I believe, Entertainment Tonight. (This was before my family had cable.) Mary Hart started talking about this controversial new British pop star named Boy George, and they showed a clip from the "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" video. I was quite intrigued, and my mom and dad looked at each other and said "What is that?" Actually, my parents absolutely loved Culture Club's music, and were big fans!!!
The first time I really took notice of Madonna was when I saw her music video of "Holiday". She had a style about her besides a good voice, looks, dancing ability, and songs with a good beat that made you move. When I saw that video I said, "this girl is going to go places", but like MDC, I had no idea just how far she would go.
I believe the very first time I saw Michael Jackson do his moonwalking, was on the Motown 25th Anniversary show. I don't remember what year that was though.
I saw MJ's "Thiller" when it first premiered. Entertainment Tonight talked about the video a lot before it premiered, so had to see this creation.
It was a unique experience!
Boy George: When Culture Club first came out, I liked what I heard, and I remember thinking that this Boy George dude must have been a cosmetologist at one time. I couldn't believe the make-up work he did.
Iluvthe80s 7-29-01, 01:11 AM The first time I saw Michael Jackson do the moonwalk was on the Motown 25.
Madonna? I first saw her on Friday Night Videos in the video "Borderline", but I had heard the song "Holiday" on the radio before that.
Culture Club? The first time I saw them was on Friday Night Videos and I remember thinking to myself, "Is it a boy or a girl?" I didn't care though because I liked his music.
soundofherwings 7-29-01, 05:17 AM I remember I was at my cousin's house and she put "Thriller" on her stereo and it took me all of about 2 seconds to start shrieking and screaming because the footsteps and creeking gate spooked me silly.
The same cousin also introduced me to madonna with borderline. As for "Like a Virgin", I don't remember first seeing it..but I remember singing it with friends and not quite knowing what a "virgin" was. lol.
Ohh, Don't mind me....I'm just stalking my prey!
LOSTNTHE80S 12-02-02, 11:53 AM I remember all the talk about Michael Jackson making some sort of expensive video..I don't think I had heard the song yet.
Madonna...when BORDERLINE was playing on the radio. I'm not sure if that's exactly when I first heard of her, but that's when I first paid any attention. I love that song!
Thriller: After having become a big fan of Billie Jean and Beat it, when I first heard this song on the radio, I liked it right away. I thought the video was amazing. I actually didn't get to see the full version of it until a few years later.
Culture Club: I remember "Do you really want to hurt me" being played regularly on the radio back then. I spent a lot of time just listening to the radio with a tape recorder waiting to tape songs I liked. This was not one of them. However as the song started to drop from the charts I started to realise it was a pretty darn good song. I never really liked Culture Club as a group though.
Shortie Blonde 12-02-02, 02:20 PM I was not alive yet. :(
Hmmm..I saw Thriller on MTV the very first time ai heard/saw it. As for Madonna I think the first sogn I heard by her was "Lucky Star" before I evne SAW what she looked like I heard it on the radio..thought her name was "LAdonna " lol...

I don't remember smelling THAT album, but I do remember the Grateful Dead album that was dunked in Patchouli Oil. Good gawd, the smell would knock you down 10 years after the release. I think they recalled it because the funk was so bad and re-issued a non-scented version.
Oops, got distracted, the first time I saw Thriller was on Friday Night Videos. We lived in the ULTRA rural part of the world where cable was NOT an option. Although you could get one of those gigantic NASA style 10 foot sattellite dishes.
The first time I saw Madonna was when I was at a buddies house and he had this poster of her (I didn't have any idea who it was) wearing a tiger striped half shirt and leather jacket...very hot to say the least.
lovergirl20 8-28-04, 09:16 AM I wasn't born the year that Thriller first premiered on MTV. I didn't see it until '87. I could remember my mother telling me about how I used to be soooo scared of the video. It did scare the heck out of me numerous of times when it would come on, but I had overcame my fear of it and loved it.
As for Madonna, I didn't see that much of her until '86.
Wasn't that much of a Culture Club fan.

Thriller was alright, it just got played way too much and with it being as long it always seemed to be on.
Madonna, wow I totally loved her first album ...

Burning up 12" version was my favorite, I also was a big fan of borderline.
Not a Culture Club at all.
