Okay, here is what is up. I defragged my computer a week ago, and since then, I cannot get into any chat rooms. THe bottom of the screen will say "page done, but with errors" and I cannot figure out what is up. I downloaded Java for it, thinking that was it, but it still doesnt work. I cant get into dreamchat, I cant listen to KNAC.COM I just cant figure it out. ( but then again, I am a moron!) Any ideas?

I get those errors all the time. All I have ever done is usually upgrade to a newer Internet Exploder (I use either 5 or 5.5, I HATE), and look for any IE service packs.

But I can honestly say I've never had that from defragging. Then again... I don't remember the last time I did defrag.

Oddly enough, I've even once fixed my royally screwed up IE by simply running ie5setup.exe again and reinstalling it.

Yeah. I seriously doubt the defrag is the cause of the problem. I agree with Aaron that re-installing IE may cure the issue.

Just as a side note though, if you are running IE6, you cannot re-install or repair unless you make a little registry tweak.

This is what you will need to do - click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate the appropriate registry subkey, right-click the IsInstalled (REG_DWORD) value, and then click Modify. To reinstall only the Internet Explorer 6 browser component on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}

Just wanted to add my 2 Cents here. Defrag would not have caused that problem, but then again we already heard two opinions with that. However, there is either something going wrong with the system, ie...a virus, harddrive problem or your system was changed therefore causing problems with the net.

Checked your internet settings for security. Make sure your settings are not set to high and cookies is disabled. I also agree with the other posts, update your internet explorer. If it is an older version then updated is the best course. By the way, what Operating system are u running....win98, win me, win 2000 winxp, what?

Anyway, I am a computer nerd by day..and a sex monkey by night hahahah  (i love this guy) I would be happy to answer any questions you have!!:D

Personally, if this were me, I would hex edit the BIOS code, export it to binary and re-write it in pure assembly language, take out the entire network core and redesign the TCP/IP networking subsystem using pure 32-bit assembly language, while linking that directly to the BIOS via 32-bit int86x calls.

I would also make the the UDP protocol more efficient by doubling it as a CRC-32 algorithm.

But that's just me...

 @ Aaron. Should we start a new forum on coding your own OS and components. ;)

I am running windowsXP. When I click on the IE thing, it doesnt have a version number. (I know, I sound like a friking idiot!) I cannot figure out which on it is. I right clicked on it, and chose properties, and it didnt say what version it was. The computer is new, less than a year old, and I believe had the newest versions of everything on it when I bought it. And, like I said, everything worked until i defragged it. Didnt delete anything else.

I'll leave the the actual problem to them, but to check what version of IE you're using, just open the browser, click 'help' then click 'about internet explorer' that'll give you what version you're running.

You are using exploder 6.0 then. Windows XP comes with it. I temporarily switched back just for shits and grins (even though I still HATE it), and its all the same.

I ran 2000 Pro until a microsoft service pack screwed up my networking. Then I switched to 2000 server. A few days later it screwed up so I reinstalled XP pro.

You would think I would learn. I'm about to rip it out again. Maybe I should just once and for all use red hat.

Anyway, you have exploder 6 jasper.

OK, I have IE Version 6. Is uninstalling it, and reinstalling it what I should do? I dont want to mess up this POS thing I got, but I would like to be able to use it as well!

aaron

You should just be able to install right over the top of it. If you go to Microsofts web site and look for IE 6, there should be a file there called ie6setup.exe that you can download.

Once you get that, just execute it (double clicky), then it should ask what you want to download. IE comes with many options, but you only need a few of them.

I usually select the browser, help, virtual machine, codecs, and some of the other options at the top of the list. I never pick them all. Just a bunch of crap you don't need.

That should do the trick. If that doesn't fix your problem, then it sounds like something bigger is screwed up.

Jasper

It wont allow me to download that because it says I have a new version already on my computer. Now what do I do?

Shakey
8-31-02, 06:23 PM
Yep! That's what I was talking about earlier in the thread. You will have to do the regedit trick to make it think it is not already installed. Here it is again.

This is what you will need to do - click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate the appropriate registry subkey, right-click the IsInstalled (REG_DWORD) value, and then click Modify.

Hey Jasper, it seems that Aaron is giving you some good advice, however I would like to know if you are running WinXP home or Win XP pro. In my field, I have experienced alot of problems with WIn XP home. My suggestions would be to reformat the drive and install WinXP pro.

I still think you need to check a virus scan as that can have problems to. Also, how do u get online? Do you use internet explorer? Or do you use msn, earthlink, aol, etc? There is a function where you can right click on the icon and choose a compatibility. Maybe it would be more compatible with a Win98 format or even win 2000.

And just a quick note to Aaron....you info is great, however, not everyone is as technically inclind as you and you might want to keep the help on a more user friendly version. Just thought I would tell ya that!!

Good Luck Jasper.

I told you I hate IE 6. Now you see why. EVIL!

And now you see why I don't do technical support on the phones anymore. I did that thankless job for almost 2 years and hated every minute of it.

Nothing worse than getting this call 20 times a day:

Me: What are you trying to do?
Moron: I'm trying to run the upgrade, but it gives me an error.
Me: Did you write the error down? (Of course he didn't)
Moron: Ummm no, do you need it?
Me: (Oh hell no... there's only ONE possible error on the computer.) Only if you want the problem fixed.
Moron: Oh sorry, I didn't write it down. Well, can you help me get it fixed?
Me: (By choice, no. But I'm getting paid for it, so what the hell.) Ok, where are you at?
Moron: The store.
Me: (No Einstein, I know your stupid, but even YOU can't be THAT stupid.) I mean on the screen?
Moron: Oh, it says C colon slash and a pointy arrow.
Me: Ok, so your in the root directory of your C drive. Do this: type A: and hit enter.
Moron: How do I do that?
Me: (Has the thought of using the keyboard crossed your mind? Apparently not.) Well, I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say use your keyboard.
Moron: Ok, what do I type again?
Me: (Memory pills not working?) A: and hit enter.
Moron: I don't have an enter button.
Me: (How about a brain? Do you have one of those?) Enter, return, whatever. Just make it happen.
Moron: Ok, now it says A colon pointy arrow.
Me: (Apparently you never learned the greater than/less than in school. Did you graduate??) Ok, your at the A drive now. Type in CVS and hit enter.
Moron: With the keyboard?
Me: (Did you parents have any other kids that lived?) Well, the mouse doesn't have keys, so that narrows it down.
Moron: Ok... oh wait... somethings happening.
Me: (Is something threatening you with a gun? Please do me a favor and tell the robber to pull the trigger.) Which is what?
Moron: Well the light on that thing where I put the floppy just came on.
Me: (Yes, it's EXTREMELY technical. It's called... <shhhhh> a FLOPPY drive! Shhhh.... don't tell anybody, its a secret!) You mean the light on the floppy drive.
Moron: Ok well its loading. It's getting further this time. No wait. Now it says I'm out of memory.
Me: (Yes, we've already proven that you are stupid, no sense in adding insult to injury.) Ok, type MEM /C /P and hit enter.
Moron: Ok, M - E - M... slash....slash.... ummm.... I'm looking for it. Where is it?
Me: (What? Your brain? Damned if I know.) Have you looked on the keyboard?
Moron: Oh wait! I found it!
Me: (I take it you don't hear that much from your wife, do you?) So type in /C /P and tell me how much CONVENTIONAL memory you have. The number will be less than 640K.
Moron: Ummm I have 64 M - B of memory.
Me: (Looking for bottle of Jack Daniels... will be needing it soon) No, the number is below that. You should see total, used, and free columns.

Yes, these simple "take things out of conventional memory like mouse, sound, and CD-ROM driver and put them in EMS, XMS, or just get rid of them" calls came in daily. It became a mystery why I drank so much. Teaching DOS commands to people who barely knew Windows is like teaching a 5 year old to drive a diesel.

Technical support jobs just plain suck. I won't do it every again.

*Disclaimer: No offense to computer illiterates. This is similar to being a mechanic and dealing with people who know NOTHING about cars. It takes nerves of steel. That's why I don't do phone support anymore.

LMAO @ Aaron  That's funny ....

... but seriously Aaron, your posts can get a li'l technical, I don't mind I learn something new, but for the newbie it's very overwhelming ... Then again, most problems posted here seem to get solved, so you must be doing something right ;) Keep up the good rants :D

Hey, screwball! I'd like to think that I have a little something to do with that... ;)

Beyond that, let's play nice boys and girls. We've never had any issues in this forum before, let's don't start now. :)

Ok I'm not feeling a lot of love in the room. :D

Fine, next time you need your networking core drivers rewritten, or your BIOS flash isn't working because the hex address is wrong, or you need to remap your IRQs so your non-standard hardware will work with normal addresses, don't come crying to me for help!

OKay, I finally went to do this, reload the IE, but when you get to the part that says "locate the appropriate registry subkey" I am lost. WHat is the appropriate registry subkey?

I know, I am a moron, and I thank you all for your help!

Shakey
9-09-02, 03:02 AM
Not a moron at all, Ron. Most people have no reason to muck about in the registry.

Try this and let me know if it is clear enough.

Click on the "Start" button

click on "Run"

In the dialog box that opens up type "regedit"

Now expand the menu choices on the left hand side by clicking on the little "+" sign using the following choices/

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SOFTWARE

Microsoft

Active Setup

Installed Components

{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}

Look on the right hand side for a line that reads "IsInstalled". Double click it and you should see a box with a "1" in it. Change it to a "0" and click "OK".

Reboot and you should be good to go. If this doesn't work, send me a PM and I'll see what I can do.

OKay, I did this, and it worked for about 10 hours, now, back to the same old stuff. Any suggestions? If I switch to a different version of windows, does that effect how my Cable Modem is set up?

Shakey
9-16-02, 04:53 AM
This is really bizarre. You're running XP right now, aren't you? I know it is a long shot, but have you given any thought to running a System Restore to a point before this began happening?

Jasper
9-16-02, 09:53 AM
I have no clue what you are talking about!

Shakey
9-16-02, 07:13 PM
Here is a guide that should explain it better. System Restore (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q306084&)

It basically just resets your system to a point in time before your troubles began.

Jasper
9-17-02, 05:45 PM
Shakey, I did that, and it took me back, WAY back, and even had the Kazaa program and its few hundred (okay 700) songs I had downloaded and had since deleted.

Everything is working fine. I thought about something though, could my pop up killer be causing the problem, since all of the problems are with programs that pop open a smaller window? If so, I dont want to reinstall that if it is possible that is messing my stuff up.

The real problem here is that Windows XP is a phenominal pain in the ass and I spend way too much time troubleshooting my sister's system (I insisted on Windows 98 in my system until Micorsoft can fix the plethora of crap they saw fit to program into XP) Jasper, you may be better off downgrading to 98 for another year or so--XP is a relative infant in the world of OSs. WIn 98 had a world of problems with it when it first came out an now is fairly reliable and easy to use

aaron

I've been saying the same thing about Windows XP since the beginning of this year. It's a bloated piece of shit that has the Windows 2000 layout, a new paint job, and a bunch of thouands of lines of useless code.

I installed it again for shits and grins, but was happier with Windows 2000.

Nobody seems to believe me that XP just plain SUCKS.

I used 2000 Pro for months and it was great. Better than 98 and XP together.

Technically, I guess it is possible, but I have some doubts about it. You might try running without it and see. It actually reminds me more of the behavior I have seen from Zone Alarm when the settings are to high. You're not running it, are you? What popup killer are you using?
