What is your personal, all-time, favorite 80s video? Pick one... or a small handful, if you absolutely can't pick one.

Mine is "Veronica" by Elvis Costello... a beautiful little storytelling piece. (I'm not positive whether it was released in 1989 or 1990, so please forgive me if it was over the line!)

I wouldn't know! Too many to mention.
'Wild Boys' - Duran Duran
'Stand And Deliver' - Adam Ant
'Just A Gigilo' - David Lee Roth

Just to name a *small* few.

You mean I can only pick one or a small few??? Hmm...well, until Livesay makes a video, I'll have to say...
Bon Jovi's...Lay Your Hands on Me...

Why you ask? Well, because your's truly was actually in the video. I was in the audience, and I made the video! Woo-hoo!!!

Mine, as always is A-Ha's timeless 'Take On Me' but a few others that I quite liked was that clip for 'Joan Of Arc' by OMD - the one with the girl on the horse in the snow - it was like a real high budget production!

Another one was 'Life In A Northern Town' by the Dream Academy - it was a great song for starters, but I just digged the clip with the little kid at the start with the balloons
blowing in the wind, and it's all rainy and cold! I dunno? I just thought it was cool and it brings back many memories when I see it now

Love Cats by the Cure had all kinds of charm.

This might be a tad off topic, but I think the new Sugar Ray video is hilarious, in particular the part of the video where Mark McGrath and the rest of the band are made up to look like Duran Duran (complete with a faux cover of "Rio" in the background), with two ladies straight out of Flock of Seagull's "I Ran" video (i.e. heavy eye makeup and trash bags)... I got a good chuckle out of that one...

Gosh, I have tons of favorite videos from 80's early and later, They were just so interesting back then. We did not have cable so I watched my videos on Friday Night Videos on NBC I believe. Anybody remember that? The opening was a cartoonish image of a man blindfolded and tied up. I know they recently tried doing something they called friday night with dorky host but it was not same thing. We also had a local video show hosted by one of the local DJs on Saturday afternoons in 83 or 84. DJDaffy might remember. Anyway, I loved Billy Jean, Big Time, One, Parents just don't understand, and anything by The Cure. Speaking of Will Smith, does anyone else remember "Nightmare on My Street?" Also, I think I may be only peron who has seen video for "Yo Little Brother" where little kid tries to get out of spanking by dressing up as prince, cyndi lauper, michael jackson, etc. Anyone else seen it? DJ daffy has the song with artist's name but has never seen video. Any replies would be greatly appreciated. You guys have great topics.

In the 80´s, we had a show called "Formel 1" which was the main source for top hits in Germany (MTV kicked in about 1987, but we didn´t had cable until 1989). Most of the vids were made in the studio, that was the first time I´ve seen Camouflages "Great Commandment".
My favourite videos were "Stripped" by Depeche Mode, as they had finally done what we fans had always expected to see in their vids...trashing cars with jackhammers and torching TV sets , and New Orders "Blue Monday" for the dadaistic approach. Another fave, although from the early 90s, is "Mindphaser" by Frontline Assembly, very cool sci-fi atmosphere, like Blade Runner.

NB: The idea with the flashing strobes which were displayed in Duran Durans vid "Wild Boys" was actually taken from a German Rock Show, WDR Rockpalast. The guys had seen them and almost wanted them at once for their flick. Those strobes were invented by a German lighting technician. So much for trivia...

My favorite video of all time is the Police's "Every Breath You Take." It was totally unique at the time and matched the mood of the song so well.

And I have to mention Duran Duran, they were my favorite band in the 80s and I still love the videos they made. "Is There Something I Should Know" is probably my favorite, with "Notorious" second.

A quick list of some other 80s videos I loved, in something close to date order:

"Bette Davis Eyes" Kim Carnes
A new wave club where everyone is slapping each other? What's not to like?

"Stand & Deliver" Adam & The Ants
Looks a little cheap because it was done on tape and not film, but still great fun.

"Rockit" Herbie Hancock
I didn't realize what that robot in the bed was actually doing to himself until a few years ago.

"If Anyone Falls" and Stand Back" Stevie Nicks
Ah, Stevie. I thought she was a princess. I was like 11 years old at the time, okay?

"Love Is A Stranger" Eurythmics
The end of this video used to scare me, when they turn out to be robots.

"Running With The Night" Lionel Richie
LR was always dorky, but everyone else in the video was cool. I love how the priest is such a great dancer at the end of the video.

"Only The Lonely" the Motels
Martha Davis should have been a movie star.

"Lipstick Lies" Pat Benatar
Pat dreaming of high fashion. Trendy 80s high fashion. I love it.

"The Glamorous Life" Sheila E.
My favorite part: Sheila kicks her cymbal.

"Gypsy" and "Hold Me" Fleetwood Mac
One big epic glamorous video and one artsy one shot in the desert.

"Head Over Heels" and "Turn To You" the Go-Go's
I want to be a Go-Go when I grow up.

"Right Now" and "Surrender Your Heart" Missing Persons
RN was like new wave theater, and SYH was the first time I remember seeing computer animation or effects. It was really impressive at the time.

"Thriller" Michael Jackson
Enough has been said about this video. But I still do the zombie dance when I happen to catch it on TV.

"Boys Of Summer" Don Henley
All of Don Henley's videos are great.

"Lucky Star" Madonna
Another dance routine that everyone I knew learned.

"Better Be Good To Me" Tina Turner
Could her hair get any bigger? And how much blush does one woman need?

"Let Him Go" Animotion
Another arty video shot in the desert.

"Operator" Midnight Starr
I loved the song and the video was a lot of fun. Why were there 9 people in this band?

"The Warrior" Scandal
Hair and makeup again.

"I Would Die 4 U/Baby I'm A Star" (concert clip) Prince & the Revolution
It seemed like it was half an hour long and I always felt compelled to sit through the whole thing.

"Don't Walk Away" Rick Springfield
Rick as a tortured artist living in a very 80s loft apartment. And I don't think his hair ever looked better.

"Take On Me" a-ha
Enough said about this clip. I also loved the first minute or so of "The Sun Always Shines On TV".

"Bastards Of Young" the Replacements
Three minutes of looking at a stereo. Hilarious.

"Chain Reaction" Diana Ross
Miss Ross takes over the airwaves to show off her trademark 60s, 70s, and 80s looks.

"Seven Wonders" and "Little Lies" Fleetwood Mac
More videos about clothes. And the earrings Christine and Stevie wear in "Seven Wonders" must weigh about 4 pounds each.

"Missionary Man" Eurythmics
Annie Lennox should have been a movie star.

"Limbo" Bryan Ferry
A tribute to Josephine Baker, I thought it was too cool for words.

"Control" (mimi-movie) Janet Jackson
Penny & Willona reunited! Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis in big flashy coats! Jerome dances with Janet! Stop me before I hurt myself.

"Goin' Back To Cali" JJ Cool J
I think I have a thing for black & white clips. LL's chest isn't bad either. Bonus points for having Martha Quinn in it.

"Hourglass" Squeeze
Loved the visual effects in this one.

"Hysteria" Def Leppard
I loved this for the dancing and the slow-motion footage. There's one shot of Rick Savage tossing his head that still kills me.

"Glamour Boys" Living Colour
I love that hey did a video about being fierce that's practically a cartoon.

"We Got Our Own Thang" Heavy D & The Boyz
Simple and colorful.

"Vogue" Madonna
*Heavily* influenced by EBYT. Nobody seemed to notice.

special mention to videos I loved because of the clothes: "Romeo" by Donna Summer, which was made up of footage from the movie Flashdance; "Into The Groove" by Madonna with all the Desperately Seeking Susan outfits on display; "Beat Of A Heart" by Scandal (Patty Smyth wore a gorgeous Stephen Sprouse dress); Jane Wiedlin's solo videos for "Inside A Dream" and "Blue Kiss" and all of Jody Watley's videos.

I really hope this is complete! I guess this is proof that I have a compulsion when it comes to music videos.

Of course you rememer the clip to 'I Wanna Be Sedated' Daff- the band is sitting around a table and heaps of people burst into the room and do various things 'in highspeed' while the ramones just sit at the table in 'realtime' as Joey sings the song.

In reference to your other question:
"Mandinka". What a great song. Is that the one that MC Lyte did the rap on the remix version? I can't remember which Sinead song that was. They used to play it on Yo! MTV raps.

That song was 'Put You Hands On Me' - it has the most funkiest bass on that track!!!

One of my favorite clips is 'Maid Of Orleans'
by OMD - with that attractive lady riding around on a horse outside, while the band is singing the song in a cosy log cabin - I totally love the image of the sword sliding into the snow when the horse bucks her off!
amazing cimematics for it's age!
