View Full Version : The 80's Look
Iluvthe80s 11-23-01, 04:31 PM My sister and I always had a name for certain videos that looked like they were recorded with a camcorder. Most of them came out in the early 80's. We called it "The 80's Look". Here are some examples of what I am talking about:
Jeopardy - Greg Kihn Band
One Thing Leads To Another - The Fixx
Fashion -David Bowie
Heart Of Glass - Blondie
Goody Two Shoes - Adam Ant
A Forest - The Cure
If you know what i'm talking about, then add some of the ones you remember. :)
I'd say "Stand and deliver" from Adam Ant would be one, too. Probably most of his were that way. I love those kind of videos.
"Close to me" from the Cure where they're falling off the cliff in a closet.
Scandal - Warrior was always an 80s look to me.
Same as pretenders Chrisy Hines - Don't get me wrong she had the look. :)
Is this what you mean?
ZZTop's - Legs had the look too :D

Not quite what I mean, Zel. It is the film look itself. (Hard to explain) It looks cheaply made. Take a look at some of the videos I have listed and I think you will see what I'm talking about. It has nothing to do with the way anyone looks or is dressed. Most of these videos were shot in a studio.

Yes, great example! Most of the early Adam Ant or Adam and the Ants videos were like that.
80sTrivia 11-24-01, 10:45 AM I know exactly what you are talking about, Stacy. :)
I would have to say "Mickey" by Toni Basil has that cheap, blindingly white 80s look about it.
Also, "Turning Japanese" by the Vapours, "Puttin' on the Ritz" by Taco (blech!), "Lies, Lies, Lies" by The Thompson Twins, "Harden My Heart" by Quarterflash and "Cars" by Gary Numan...
80sTrivia: Official Stalker of DD86 & jen* :D
Iluvthe80s 11-24-01, 11:02 AM Yes on all of them except "Turning Japanese" was kinda borderline. "Mickey" and the rest are great examples!
Iluvthe80s 11-25-01, 02:12 AM Here are a few more:
Love Plus One - Haircut 100
Pretty Woman - Van Halen
Goodbye To You - Scandal
RestlessKind 11-25-01, 09:49 PM Have to agree on "Harden My Heart" by Quaterflash. that is the epitome of "the 80s look". Also "Words" by Missing Persons had that look. This is what i look for in a great 80s video!
OHHHHH I get it LOL. :D
Parachute club's Rise Up had this look. One room, white walls - painted the walls and threw around paint :)
What about Animotions' Obsession.

I still don't think you see what I'm talking about, Zel. Let me try to rephrase here. The film quality of these videos is usually kinda bright/white looking and it looks like it could have been filmed with a camcorder. All the ones above are perfect examples. "Obsession" doesn't really fit the profile. I have never seen the other video so I would not know about that one.
:)
Okay well there was lots of 80s looks :D I'm going to have to take a look at my videos.
Iluvthe80s 12-02-01, 12:27 AM Some more examples:
Planet Earth - Duran Duran
I Want Candy - Bow Wow Wow
Other Voices - The Cure
Boys Keep Swinging - David Bowie
Trixter 12-02-01, 01:48 AM Centerfold - J. Geils Band
Our Lips Are Sealed - Go-Go's
I Know What Boys Like - The Waitresses
Roxanne - Police
Rapture - Blondie
Even It Up - Heart
I Melt With You - Modern English
I Ran (So Far Away) - A Flock of Seagulls
The "washed out, overlit" look defined 80's videos. I think they actually shot on video rather than film...

80sTrivia 12-06-01, 10:10 AM Another one to add: "Pop Muzik" by M... very cheaply done and shot of video!!!
80sTrivia: Official Stalker of DD86 & jen* :D
djdaffy1227 12-06-01, 04:03 PM Pop Muzik was from 1979 but it definitely is the type of video she is talking about. Another 70's video like that is "Video killed the radio star" by the Buggles
80sTrivia 12-06-01, 10:39 PM Okay, DJ, ya gotta get all technical on me!!! ;)
Another video to add: "Keep On Loving You" by REO Speedwagon; shot on video, doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and has an 80s model type with big hair!

DEEP GREEN SEA 12-08-01, 04:49 AM Here's one for you,
Depeche Mode's Just can't get enough.
RetroMan 12-08-01, 05:03 AM good one Deep Green Sea! what about Nena and 99 Luft Ballons - very 'camcordery'
Iluvthe80s 12-08-01, 10:21 AM I saw another one to add to the list:
"Trouble" by Lindsey Buckingham.
RestlessKind 12-09-01, 04:13 PM I just saw "Charlotte Sometimes" on VH1 Classics-that has a very camcorder-ish look!
wavemaster 12-09-01, 05:21 PM That video by EBN-OZN...'AEIOU Sometimes Y'...looked also very camcorder-ish (to me).
Actually, many videos of the 80s were filmed on video tape, since it was way more cheaper than 16 or even 35 mm film. Plus, they could be faster thrown on the growing market for music clips, since they need no developing and were easier to edit (whoever tried to overdub a video sure knows what I´m meaning).
Given the technical standards of video filming in the 80s, resolution and sensitivity of the cams and tapes were poorer (and still are) in comparision to celluloid, but the digital technology has vastly improved, resulting in better quality.
"Love Plus One", by Haircut 100 is waaaaay camcorderish. I just saw it on VH1C for the first time in a long time. It is so washed out, it's hard to tell what you are watching.
-Jim
Dancingdoll1986 12-10-01, 04:04 PM How about:
Freeze Frame - J. Giles Band?
They were great for videos that looked like they were taped by a buddy.
80sTrivia 12-10-01, 10:19 PM I just saw another one... "Look of Love" by ABC...

DEEP GREEN SEA 12-11-01, 10:06 PM Man!! What VH1 Do you have??? I never catch stuff like that on TV. I always get JUNK!
I never see The Cure, "Charlotte Sometimes"...I would have a heart attack if I saw that.
(If there are any Cure fans, did you that's about a book? It's named the same and written by Penelope Farmer)

It is VH-1 Classic Channel. All '60's, '70's, and 80's videos 24 hours a day with no commercials (except for VH-1 promos here and there). I know that DirecTV has it, Dish Network, and most Time Warner Cable Companies. Call your local cable company to find out about it.
I have had it now on DirecTV for about 2 months and I love it! :)
