View Full Version : Video Killed the Radio Star
OK, I hope I am posting in the right place.
Who caught this series on VH-1? It was an interesting look back at the beginning all the way to the present. The way videos have changed and music in general because of "the phenomena". In general, it reminded me of videos I haven't seen in ages and some I haven't seen at all-banned ones like Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Relax, Madonna's Erotica (?) tho' they didn't mention Duran's Girls on Film. Phil Collins lamented that video put style and image before the music. Hmmm.. wonder why he was perturbed? Sorry I am not a big Phil fan. Altho' there is some truth to the comment, video made bands famous by putting music to images and faces to the names making it a package deal. Any thoughts?

Gee. I haven't yet seen the banned version of Relax either! They occassionally play Madonna's Erotica and Justify My Love on tv at night over here.

Sal Collaziano 5-25-00, 03:46 AM I never saw the "Relax" video. What was wrong with it? I missed that special Liz was talking about. I intended on watching it but, it just never happened...

I ought to watch my tape again, but if I'm not mistaken, there were 4 versions of "Relax". The banned one had a lot of simulated homosexual acts. I'm sure VH-1 will rerun it-you ought to catch it, it was very interesting to see the beginning/early history.

Gunner Girl 5-31-00, 10:16 PM In my opinion, all videos these days look alike. Maybe it's just because I'm stuck in the 80's but in the past 5 years or so, it just seems like all artists use the same 'formula'. You know, like the same director, colors, camera angles, etc.
What do you all think?

Sal Collaziano 6-01-00, 02:57 AM Yeah, they do seem all the same. But that's probably because the music is all the same. It's either an R&B video on MTV or the same ole silly shit on VH1. Atleast in the 80s there was variety. And I liked it all...

Roemello 6-01-00, 04:22 AM Yes, sadly it is true about the videos. Creativity and Individuality pretty much died in the mid to late 90's http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/frown.gif No one wants to be weird and unusual these days...they're just about all drones http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/frown.gif

Actually, I like Blink 182. They make funny videos and aren't afraid of laughing at themselves. But I do like a story for a film clip rather than just the artist or band in concert or just walking around. Boring!! Aqua, Beastie Boys, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, they all do story-like clips. Why can't more do that?

Sal Collaziano 6-06-00, 01:57 AM True.. "Intergalactic" is a really cool video. But that's the Beastie Boys - they were made in the 80s. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif

I saw the special Liz was talking about. I was thinking they said there were 3 versions of "Relax". But anyway, back in 85 or so I saw the banned "Relax". It was on Night Flight, I think it was the 2nd worst one. If anyone has seen Body Double with Melanie Griffith, the porn movie scene is pretty much the video.
