What's everyone's opinion on the Top 10 groundbreaking videos?

The 4 that automatically come to my mind are:

Michael Jackson's "Thriller"
Herbie Hancock's "Rock it"
Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer"
Genesis "Land of Confusion" (don't know if you can truly call it 'groundbreaking' but I loved those puppets!)

Any others?

Groundbreaking???? Well, I'd have to agree with you on Thriller...with it being a "mini-movie" It was cool! I'll have to think of others....there were so many that I'd consider "groundbreaking"......

Any list of groundbreaking videos MUST include Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing." I still think that's the best video of all time. Although I do agree that Michael Jackson was the trendsetter for making expensive videos, really expensive ones!!

Peter Gabriel's videos are truly brilliant for their time. Thriller - Yep I agree! I liked A-HA's 'Take On Me' video. Very well done! Nothing else is coming to mind at the moment.

Ohhh.. AHA's Take on Me was a good choice!
You guys are naming all the good ones...
a couple more that I think could possibly fit into this category are...

The Cars "You Might Think" and
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - "Don't Come Around Here No More"

I know you mentioned Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" but did anyone mention his other awesome video that used alot of the same techniques.. "Big Time" ?

That was cool, too...

I believe both RASPBERRY BERET by Prince and that Pet Shop BOys video for "lets make lots of money" or whatever the name of it was, were both great videos.

Ok, I'm getting back to the video subject. I know this wasn't relieced but has anyone seen Dry County by Bon Jovi? If you have the Keep The Faith album it's the really touching song that's about 10 min long. The video is great! There's like really nice messages in it and everything. Makes me want to cry. Another one that makes me cry is Soul Asylum's Runaway train http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//frown.gif That's just horrible seeing all those missing children. Those videos just really touch me, I know I'm corny http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif

"Cherry pie" the best video ever? It was #1 on MTV's worst videos of all time. I really liked "Man in the mirror" by Michael Jackson. I called it a video collage. The first time I remember a video that used all real news items. It fit the song to a tee. I also liked "Shock the monkey" by Peter Gabriel. As stated before every video by Peter was great. Tom Petty never made a bad video either. How about "Owner of a lonely heart" by Yes. "under pressure" by Queen and David Bowie was cool with the real video and old movies mixed in. I know this one is 90's but I really liked Janet Jackson's "Alright" the long version. Great dancing and Cab Calloway (R.I.P.) need I say more.

I am fortunate enough to have recorded lots of 80's videos from a show that VH-1 ran in 1991 called "History of Music Videos from A to Z" and when they used to play "Classic MTV" on MTV. I have about 3 videotapes worth. There is still lots of them I wish I had though. Some of the groundbreaking videos I can think of would be:
Thriller - Michael Jackson
Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel
Land Of Confusion - Genesis
Take On Me - A-ha
Harlem Shuffle - Rolling Stones

Really? Ours plays anything from The Beatles to some latest stuff. Mainly music for older people 30s and over, so no kiddie pop or Limp Bizkit crap. I like Sade's new songs. They show them a bit. Saturday nights/morning is DiscoMAX - all old and new dance hits, very cool! Monday nights is Rock MAX - is as sounds, lots of Motley Crue, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper, Steppenwolf, Led Zepplin and so on..... Top ten reasons why MTV declared Cherry Pie the worst video ever:

10: It's only logical that after MTV played the video about 9,000 times, they would declare it the worst ever.

9: They don't want red-blooded American boys watching their network.

8: The word "f***" is used less than 50 times during the video.

7: The girl in the video isn't called a "bitch" or a "ho" or "slapped up".

6: By current MTV standards, the girl is wearing way too many clothes.

5: No one in the band is wanted on gun charges.

4: No genitalia is groped, fondled, or thrust into the camera during the video.

3: By current MTV standards, there is a complete absense of explicit sexual content in the video.

2: The song lyrics contain no death threats.

And the number one reason why MTV hates Cherry Pie:

It's a Rock 'n' Roll song.

i think that any video that is totally different from your everyday video is groundbreaking, i can't stand all these videos w/ ppl in clubs or such places. i think 'rio' and 'hungry like the wolf.' by duran duran, DEFINETLY DIRE STRAITS AND PETER GABERIEL and umm Cindi Lauper's video for Girls just wanna have fun, and michael jackson's videos go with out saying.

I don't see how Thriller was groundbreaking. Can someone explain it to me?

To me it was just a long video for hallowe'en. Michael was already popular by then and no one else made long videos after. Except maybe himself aqnd Madonna's Pepsi commercial.
