View Full Version : Didja Know? Genesis
Did you know that the puppets used in the "Land Of Confusion" video were created by puppet makers named...FLUCK ( ) and LAW? This video won them the Best Concept Video Grammy in 1987.
They have also sold over 100 million albums in their collective career...not counting their solo stuff.
Phil Collins used to be their drummer, and Peter Gabriel their front man, until Gabriel decided to go his own way. Then Phil stepped up, and the group took off. :)
What little bits can you share with us about Genesis?
LOSTNTHE80S 8-21-02, 09:41 PM I have a friend in the UK (he's from the states but his wife is from Paris) ..his wife's ex husband used to be in a band..and they knew Phil Collins when he was (as my friend put it) "Not Phil Collins..superstar, but Phil Collins ...the drum teacher."
I enjoy Phil Collin's music..whether it be with Genesis or as a solo musician. Good topic VAL.
Iluvthe80s 8-21-02, 10:25 PM This is more Phil Collins related, but Phil Collins played drums on Adam Ant's "Strip" album. I believe he was a producer as well, but I would have to look at the album to make sure.
djdaffy1227 8-21-02, 10:42 PM Phil Collins did produce Adam Ant's "Strip" and Frida's "I know there's something going on".
Peter Gabriel's "In your eyes" was a song originally done by Genesis when he was in the band.
Although the band originated in the 60's their first #1 came in the 80's with "Invisible touch". What song knocked it out of the #1 spot? Peter Gabriel's first #1, "Sledgehammer"
Cartoon_Chris 8-23-02, 01:58 AM When Peter Gabriel left, the band auditioned over 400 singers before deciding to have Phil take over the vocals!
Phil Collins is the only person to play at both Wembley Stadium and RFK stadium for both Live Aid shows. He played drums for the "Led Zepplin reuinion" at Live Aid.
Mike Rutherford and Tony banks (is that his name?) were in Mike and the Mechanics
Phil Collins isn't a bad actor. He starred in a surprise hit comedy called "Buster" and has had one or two roles in films since then.
BlueMolly2001 8-25-02, 08:11 PM Actually, Jasper Mike Rutherford was the only member to be in Mike and the Mechanics. Tony Banks did solo work.
Peter Gabriel related: Kate Bush did backing vocals for his song, "Games Without Frontiers" and a duet with Peter on the song, "Don't Give Up".
Phil Collins related: He did a cameo appearance on Miami Vice as a game show host. He also produced, did drums and sang backup on the Howard Jones song, "No One Is to Blame".
djdaffy1227 8-26-02, 12:16 AM Phil Collins' first job "acting" was as an extra in the Beatles 1965 film "Help!"
sketcher 8-26-02, 12:58 PM Speaking of Frida, Phil Collins also sang a duet with her on her album "Something's Going On". The song he sang with her is called "Here We'll Stay". He told Frida it wasn't suitable for release as a single but she really liked it so she released a single version with her singing all the lyrics.
She chose him to produce her album after hearing his "Face Value" album. She identitified with the themes of divorce on it.
Okay....so once and for all..
Can someone please shed some light on the song In The Air Tonight.
I have heard nothing but rumours about this song since it came out. Does anyone know the real story behind it?
Cartoon_Chris 8-27-02, 03:55 PM In The Air Tonight was done once on Pop-Up Video and says the various urban legends surrounding the song are not true. Phil says the song has no specific meaning, but the dark and bitter tone of various songs from the Face Value album come from his feelings in the wake of his recent divorce.
Did you know ~ In March 1996, Collins announced that he too was leaving Genesis. Bravely (or desperately?), Banks and Rutherford recruited singer Ray Wilson and readied a new album, Calling All Stations. Meanwhile, original fans breathlessly await Atlantic's long-delayed series of Genesis box sets.

There are two out now - one from 1967-75 and another covering 1976-79. There was going to be a third box set but apparently that plan's been scrapped.
