This is another one of my odd problems.

When I moved my arrow across the icons in my bottom browser, they disappeared. They seem to be there but are invisiable.

When you say "browser" do you mean your Internet browser (Internet Explorer, Navigator, etc...) or do you mean the Windows Taskbar?

That thingy at the bottom where my icons are located...showing I am connected and my yahoo and aim icons. Right below my time.

Maybe it is this beta version of Yahoo! I have?

:hammer: Taz! :p

What you have to do is right click on it , bring up the properties menu and see what it's set on. Then fiddle with it until you like it and apply it. That might do the trick (it could be on autohide)

When you place your cursor over an icon and they disappear, it sometimes means that the program they represent has terminated. Try to right-click on the icon (or where it is supposed to be) and see if you get a menu of any kind.

As for it being the beta of AIM? Maybe. That's why beta's are beta's. They're buggy (sometimes). Does it happen when you have AIM shut down? Is it just AIM that disappears or all of your icons?

Sorry if I seem to be asking a lot of questions. It's just the only way to figure these things out. :)

Christine, no it is not on 'autohide' I can see them now. This only happens some of the time. :)

Shakey, It is Yahoo! ;) It does not seem to happen when I have Yahoo shut down.

All the other icons disappear BUT I can place my mouse over the area where they are and see the description but not the image. Like for instance, 'volume'(the spealker icon is missing)

Could my memory be low?

I checked my performance and it shows I have 61% free. If this happens again I will check what the performance reads than. :)

If you have at least 128 mb of ram like I think you mentioned you added months ago, adding more won't help. Windows 98 memory management just plain sucks. That's why I use Windows 2000.

By performance, I think you mean resources. 61% free isn't a hell of a lot, but should be more than enough. I've had my old 98 system down to 10% and it kept going, although VERY slowly.

So what I'm gathering is your icons in the system tray (where ICQ, AIM, your dial up icons, and so forth go) will disappear? I've had different things crash and cause that. You can tell if its running by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del and looking in the task bar. Usually if its gone from the system tray, its not running.

I have that happen all the time with my 98 machine at work. Kazaa, POW (pop up killer), Trillian, and other things just crash. That's Windows for ya.

Your beta version of Yahoo MIGHT be the cause, hard to say. I RARELY download the beta version. I can happily crash my system on my own, I don't need beta software to do it. If you are concerned about it, just uninstall Yahoo and stick with the last stable version you had.

I don't recommend using beta software. All that means is they have opened up the beta testing to everyone to help find the bugs quicker.

Think of it like beta testing a car. If the safety features of a car haven't been thoroughly tested, would you drive it? I wouldn't.

Not all beta software sucks, but until its released as stable, you never know what might happen.

Are you saying that it only happens with AIM or does it happen all of the time?

Aaron, I have windows me not 98'. :)

Shakey, It is Yahoo, not AIM. :) It only happens sometimes. Like now, it is fine. I had thought maybe my computer was going bad or something.

Another question....aaron, I did that 'ctrl+alt+del' and seen some programs i did not know. Is there a way to tell what they are? Most I can tell because I have the window up but some are things i never heard of.

Since Windows 95 came out back in 8/95, I have probably crashed 95 and 98 more than 500 times. It's just a piece of shit operating system that can't handle a load.

Windows is easy to use, but written VERY poorly. Out of all the Microsoft operating systems I've used, this is how I rank them:

DOS - Love it... worked great. Very very limited, but you could get drivers and add ons for just about anything. There are variations like Open DOS that are still written today.

Windows 3.11 - Just alright. Crashes a lot and slow as all hell, but if you like the pretty windows, it works fine.

Windows NT - DECENT operating system, but WAY limited. Has no plug and pray support, its a bitch from hell to set up dial up networking (I tried for a few hours and it would connect but not negotiate), and many other aspects are just a bitch to set up. Pretty crash proof, but VERY prone to attacks.

Windows 95 - Pure complete shit. Constantly crashes (if you put it under a load), HORRIBLE memory management, pretty interface, everything runs under it. The ONLY thing that Windows does flawlessly is crash.

Windows 98 - Just more shit on top of shit. It's good for recording and watching movies, playing games, and thats about it. I would NEVER use it as an internet server. All they did was add a few more features, which are insignificant, and sell us Windows 95 again with the name 98.

Windows 2000 - I happen to like it. I don't love it, but its alright. My video capture card doesn't perform as well and many divx codecs won't run with a shit, but overall, its WAY better than 95 or 98. Smooth multi-tasking, better crash protection, and by god, it actually makes USE of memory over 128 mb!

Windows ME - Only briefly used it. It's just Windows 98 with a altered paint job, and few drivers for it. I don't know anybody who even uses it anymore.

Windows XP - A combination of 98/NT with a totally different paint job, and more bugs than the amazon rain forest. I used it for 6 months before hating it so much that I wanted to burn the CD and go postal on Microsoft. Total shit operating system. I could NOT get Easy CD Creator, Kazaa, and Internet Exploder to all run flawlessly under it. It just plain sucks. It corrupted my swap file so bad that it totally anniliated my system. Death to Microsoft.

I think 2000 will be the last Microsoft operating system I use. The only OS that ever held up to my demands were Red Hat, but some software I have is way better under Windows.

Windows 98 or ME... both suck. I've used both and hate them equally. Although I had more problems with the short time I used ME than I did with 98 for some odd reason. They are almost identical in many ways. Scary thought...

As for the taskbar, even Windows 2000 has MANY things that I don't know what they are. Taskbar manager, VMM32 (Virtual Memory Manager), dll loaders, command files, and so forth. I can't even remember half of what it loads.

All I ever look for is what program I'm trying to kill. If ICQ is being a bitch, I hit ctrl-alt-del and look for "ICQ" in the list.

Most of the files in the task manager that are NOT what you personally have loading are just support files. Without seeing the names I can't remember what they all are. I just know they are from Microsoft and therefore, very EVIL.

(I wonder if its blatently obvious that I can't stand Microsoft??)
