View Full Version : Weight Gain
LOSTNTHE80S 8-12-02, 11:19 AM Some of you may hate me for this thread but this is a serious issue. I'm one of those people that the girls hate..I can eat all of the time and not gain an ounce. It's not all it cracks up to be...not fun at all.
Would anyone please give me any suggestions. I've been to doctors, etc...Nothing that they suggest has ever helped me. I know that everyone tries to avoid certain foods because of their fat content or the amount of calories...PLEASE LIST THESE FOODS so I can stock up on them. Anything is worth a try. Thanks :)
***Please don't suggest that you hold me down and stuff cheeseburgers down my throat :)
Well i was going to suggest that
:hammer:
Here is what I do to gain weight eat three times a day and snack after 5 pm. This always works for me :p
Seriously though good luck in gaining weight.
You've probably heard this before, but have you had your thyroid checked? I have a friend who has to try consciously to keep weight on due to a thyroid problem. (And a different friend with the opposite thyroid problem, who's gained a bunch in the past couple years... they are both on medication)
It would be hard to eat somewhat healthily while trying to put weight on. I have heard that Pepperidge Farm cookies have a lot more fat in them than they seem to... palm oil & coconut oil! (check the label) Plus, they are extremely tasty.
Good luck Jana, let us know how things are going.
LOSTNTHE80S 8-12-02, 08:07 PM Hi Mary..yes. That's one of the problems...my thyroid is overactive (WAYYY over if I may say so myself) :) I was on medication for years but nothing has helped. The doctors thought after I "squeezed out a few puppies" (Bender..Breakfast Club) that I would gain also...nope.
Thanks for the suggestion about the cookies..I could handle that. The minute I gain a couple of pounds, I'll let you all know. I know that doesn't sound like much, but to me, it's a milestone.
Jana, I will talk to my friend (the one with the overactive thyroid) about it & see what she recommends. I will probably see her this weekend. :)
My wife also cannot gain weight and practically lives on cereal. How about eating more carbs like pastas, breads, and rice?
LOSTNTHE80S 8-13-02, 09:34 AM That sounds great Mary...thanks! :)
This isn't like it's a sudden thing...started many years ago...but was thinking..what the heck...maybe someone on here would have some different suggestions. I came into this world weighing 8 1/2 lbs...goes to show you that you never can tell.
ImSoooSure 8-13-02, 01:46 PM Jana, have you tried weight lifting? It puts on muscle and will definately make the scale go up. Plus you'll feel great and have tons of added health benefits.
have you checked out the calorie content on things like pastries and cookies? some of those individually wrapped pastries at the store are like 500 flippin' calories! If you consume more calories than you burn off during the course of a day, you'll gain weight. Each calorie is stored energy. So,,,buy some pastries, cakes, cookies, protein, etc. and don't run or do aerobics much. lol. Oh, chocolate, by the way, is the MOST fun to gain weight to. It triggers the seratonin chemical in your brain (or the 'feel good, love vibe', and makes you feel good for hours.. ;)
:)

*Can't lift weights...I can't lift that much or it leads to other problems. (We won't go there...spare the guys of the details :))
*Yes..I check the calorie content on things..a quart of STARBUCKS JAVA CHIP ice cream contains like 3000 cals! I make milkshakes out of it all of the time.
*I take in pleanty of carbs...
That's the main part of having this problem, as soon as I take in any cal or fat..it is immediatly burned up. I can eat three full meals a day..snack inbetween meals...eat before going to bed..and then I still wake up in the middle of the night hungry.
Let's just say that YOU DO NOT want to go to a buffet with me...it gets embarrasing at times. LOL! :)
Maybe I'll just wind up going back to a doctor. I'm just tired alot now and I know that my body is winding down..they told me this would probably happen one day but I didn't really pay too much attention to it until now.
sketcher 8-13-02, 03:38 PM I would stay away from fats as they aren't good for you. And eating more carbs is just as bad as it raises your insulin levels. You always need a balance of proteins and carbs in order to stay safe.
If I remember correctly, you go to the gym, right? If so, try to lift weights more than cardio.
Jana, I used to have this problem. I weighed 114 lbs when I went into the Army. If I had weighed one pound less, they wouldn't have taken me. As I went through basic training, I gained 20 pounds. All this in 8 weeks. Chalk it up to foods high in protein and carbs, and lots and lots of exercise. The problem is, I've had trouble with my weight ever since. I had ballooned up to 154 lbs and was then over my weight limit. I got back down to around 130 and pretty much stayed there until this last year.
I quit smoking in July of 2001. Since then, I have gained a total of 50 lbs. Right now, I absolutely hate the way I look and am determined to get back down into the 130's.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you eat healthy foods and exercise moderately, you should be alright. :thumb:
*off to take my own advice*
LOSTNTHE80S 8-27-02, 09:13 AM I gained half a pound! Last week, I treated myself twice to one of my fave restraunts..had CHICKEN FRIED STEAK smotherd in white gravy, corn, mashed potatoes and gravy, and homemade rolls.
Then I went to Dairy Queen and had their choc. extreme blizzard.
I'd better enjoy this while I can, it'll be gone in a couple of days.
