View Full Version : Movie Sequels: What Do You Think? Iluvthe80s 8-11-02, 06:44 PM Hollywood has been pumping out sequels like crazy since that seems to be the trend at the moment. Some are good and some should not ever have been made. What is your views on movie sequels? LOSTNTHE80S 8-11-02, 07:10 PM I like some of them..some, they should have just left alone. The ones I have liked: POLICE ACADEMY (ALL THE SEQUELS) GHOSTBUSTERS 2 I hear from a VERY reliable scource that the latest in the AUSTIN POWERS is good..I enjoyed the second one. All of the VACATION Sequels. DC Rebel 8-11-02, 10:52 PM There are only a few sequels that I like. Most of them, do not compare with the original. Shortie Blonde 8-11-02, 10:53 PM Some I like, some I don't Recker 8-11-02, 10:56 PM I'm a big fan of sequels, and contrary to popular belief, they're not all bad in fact I can name plenty that I thought were better than the original. For instance I liked Ghostbusters 2 more than the original. House 2 is another I believe surpassed the orginal. Aliens?? That is just a few and I'm sure there are many differing opinions on various sequels. But of course there are always really bad sequels that you wish were never made. 80sTrivia 8-12-02, 07:44 AM It's a mixed bag, really. There have been sequels that I have enjoyed and others that have just been simply dreadful and a waste of money!!! Christine 8-12-02, 12:22 PM I like some of them...I don't see too many sequels actually. Iluvthe80s 8-12-02, 09:37 PM I have liked some, but I feel lately there is an overkill of them. I feel Hollywood has gotten lazy and hasn't tried to think of fresh and new ideas. I also think that once you get into the 3 and 4 and so on of a sequel that it gets boring. IMO. Roemello 8-12-02, 10:31 PM I like some...but then there's others that just get dragged through the mud making you scream ENOUGH ALREADY!! :hammer::lol::p nolanbuc 8-13-02, 05:52 AM Some sequels are great, but most leave me ask "WHY?!?" sketcher 8-13-02, 08:52 AM I like sequels as long as they were done properly. I hate hearing about a sequel already being made as soon as the 1st movie is out (with the exception of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings) and then it (the sequel) ends up flopping. The Brady Bunch sequel sucked the big one. Harket 8-13-02, 09:03 AM Lot's of great sequels - Aliens, Terminator 2, James Bond, LOTR (it just has to be), Ghostbusters 2, Evil Dead 2 etc. Too many crappy ones too though........ Caligula 8-13-02, 05:23 PM If a sequel has a good story on it's own merits then I'll like it. The problem i see is that alot of companies can produce a sequel and no by using the name of the original movie they will ensure they get a certain audience no matter how bad the sequel is. A second thing I don't like is how the sequel always has to outdo the original in special effects, action etc. Third with the exception of Godfather 2, I can't think of alot of movies where the sequels were better than the original. Some will say Rocky # is better than the original, or Terminator 2 is better than 1, but i've always liked the original Basically if you made a Lethal Weapon 5 and it was just me doing a puppet show for 30 minutes, you'd have a blockbuster opening weekend until word of mouth spread that it wasn't really Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, but some idiot with a sock on his foot :) Sarg 8-13-02, 07:28 PM It depends, some sequels are a waste of film , some are nearly as good as the original, and some turn out to be even better than the original. abcmcd 8-14-02, 11:07 PM Some I like, but it seems that most I don't. All of the Indiana Jones movies were good because they were fresh stories and new adventures, not trying to needlessly expand on the same story as the first one. :thumb: Lethal Weapon was one that just went way too far in the sequels. The first movie was great but I couldn't even make it through the last one. :barf: maddog 8-15-02, 04:24 PM Originally posted by abcmcd Lethal Weapon was one that just went way too far in the sequels. The first movie was great but I couldn't even make it through the last one. :barf: Wow...I absolutely love all of the Lethal Weapon movies! My wife is getting quite sick of watching them...to each their own however. As for my vote...some rock, some suck! djdaffy1227 8-15-02, 05:46 PM I thought the second Brady Bunch film was better than the first myself :p I'm not much of a movie person but I guess I could go either way. I didn't like Ghostbusters 2. I love all the Star Wars films. I think it's about time to stop with Jason and Freddie....come to think of it they should have stopped at one for both of them  Recker 8-15-02, 05:55 PM The Lethal Weapon series is worthy of criticism. All though they weren't bad movies, there didn't seem to be anything to make them stand out from the original. When I think about scenes from these movies (Very few I can actually recall) I can't actually say which movie the scenes were from. Each movie was virtually the same as the other. As for the Terminator movies, all though T2 had some pretty amazing stuff, I will always love the original the best. It was orginal and had you sitting on the edge of your seat all the way through! Sheibub 8-18-02, 09:11 AM It all depends on the original movie and whether or not the sequel actually sticks to the original storyline as well. Some I find have nothing to do with the original or are at least a little offtrack. Some are worse than the first film and others *very rare* are even better! Horror movie sequels just tend to go waaaaaaay to far. And boring after a while....:sleepy: JS 8-25-02, 11:13 PM I think I like most movie sequels. Greenway88 8-26-02, 04:06 PM Originally posted by djdaffy1227 I think it's about time to stop with Jason and Freddie....come to think of it they should have stopped at one for both of them  One was too many!!! I like some, but not some others. BlitzKid 9-03-02, 12:40 PM Some are good, some are bad. Some people do not like sequels in general. But often it is not the sequel that is bad, it is the viewers expectation which is to high. A sequel simply cannot have the same suprise - never been ther ebefore- effects like the original. angeleyes25 1-21-03, 05:57 AM Originally posted by Shortie Blonde Some I like, some I don't Same here. Tydestra 1-21-03, 05:58 AM I'm 50-50 on this; but yeah some sequels just make me think of who wasnt thinking when the project was done. gently69 2-01-03, 02:25 PM Some I do and some I don't. Police Academy for example: horrible Mad Max: great! Shakey 2-05-03, 02:23 AM I think it just depends on the sequel. Some movies can carry them okay, some should just be left to become history. Slayergrrl 2-05-03, 08:56 AM Some are good and some are a waste of money... Mika 2-14-03, 10:55 PM it depends on whether or not the first one was good enough for me to want to see the sequel Darkside 2-16-03, 11:12 AM Some of them are good, when the original movie left off making you guess what happened. When original movies end with a good ending, that is when I do not like sequels. Foreigner 7-10-03, 09:02 PM sequels only go good if it has a good follow up to the first installment Pagan 8-06-03, 10:50 AM Like some, hate some.... AngelicR 9-01-04, 05:33 PM Most sequels never seem as good as the 1st Original versions, thus, I would have to say sometimes I like them, but most of the time I do not. Although, I think Shrek Rocks and every Shrek movie has been better than the previous one. Smiles. :yesnod: whistledog 9-09-04, 10:44 PM I love movie sequels, but sometimes I think they are just made just movie producers try to turn a hit movie into a bigger hit, and it doesn't always work e.g: Another 48 Hrs. (although I thought it was pretty good) sweettarts75 11-02-04, 12:49 PM I like the ones that start where the first one left off, galaga-girl 11-02-04, 11:45 PM Some sequels I really love, like the Scream trilogy and Charlies Angel's 2 I really enjoyed, but some just plain suck and should have never been made - a lot of Disney ones come to mind here... whistledog 11-03-04, 12:17 AM The worst sequel ever to be made was 'Psycho II'. It came out in (i believe) 1983, some 22 years after the original came out. And if I remember, they made a Psycho III, and I think there was even a 4th one that was made-4-TV in the 90's emacs 11-04-04, 08:34 PM speaking of sequels, the Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith teaser as now available. a mirror is over at http://www.hinjang.com/media.html Nikki_91 11-04-04, 09:54 PM I did not like European Vacation at all... whistledog 11-04-04, 11:07 PM I did not like European Vacation at all... you didn't? I wasn't a real big fan of the first Vacation mainly because I didn't like that old hag Aunt Edna. She was just too mean  Cool Hand Logan 11-06-04, 12:42 PM Like some, hate some. Like Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom Aliens American Pie 2 Jaws 2 Beneath The Planet Of The Apes Hate Ghostbusters II There are more. Just can't think of them at the moment. 80's fanatic 3-26-06, 09:47 PM Like some, hate some.... depends on the movie 80sthrowback 2-24-07, 06:03 AM You never quite know whats coming with a sequel. They only ever seem to be at extremes. Either absolutely fantastic or absolute rubbish. Could anyone imagine the following: Breakfast Club - The college years The Three Amigos Ride Again Pretty in Pink 2 Surely there are even more horrendous ones we could create than those above (thankfully which were never made) lol. What could possibly be the worst sequel to an 80's movies either real or imagined? :D 80s Queen 7-26-07, 09:41 AM I agree. There are some flicks that you just can't improve on. You gave some great examples, but I'd like to add one more. Can you imagine improving on "Fast Times"? Never happen. IMO. |
