Alright. So.. Let's say that www.newtoothbrush.com (http://www.newtoothbrush.com) works out and becomes a highly succesful business. I've got loads of money and the ability to start my own cable channel... The Eighties Entertainment Network.. Well? We've got a huge list of movies - and one of them could be the 8:00 movie every night. What about the television show lineup? What would it be? Starting from 6:00am, let's go all the way up to 5:30am the following morning. For example, Inspector Gadget may be one of the after school shows. Facts of Life might be on around 4 or 5pm, Webster, Benson, The Jeffersons, Family Ties.. Then later on you might have Knight Rider, Automan, etc.. Of course, there are so many good shows that there may only be one per week at a specific time - starting with the first episode...

What do you think of this idea? Who knows, maybe it could happen one day. Let's put together some lists of what would be on the EEN and when...

Time slots would take a bit of thought, but I got lists of tons of 80's TV shows and Cartoons over at my site http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif This would really rule if it could happen http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif You could have the toons in the morning, a block of videos at a couple different intervals during the day (I'll still take a VJ position on that note http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif), sitcoms at primetime, movies on the weekends...whoo-hoo!

Well, one Idea would be to put on a set of shows that were all on the same night, back in the 80s. Like Tuesday on ABC used to be HAPPY DAYS, then Lavern and Shirley...just remake the most powerfully "must see" nights, then fill in around those shows.

Right, this is exactly what I'm talking about.. And about the videos - that was the only problem.. Maybe that would be EMEN (hehe AMEN - But with an E. Eighties Music Entertainment Network) because we really need an all-day music video channel. The only timeslot I can imagine right now would be very early morning. That just wouldn't be good enough.. I'll start a cable station like this if I ever come into the money... And you know what?! I bet it would get popular...

Yea, an all 80's music channel with videos, concerts, interviews from the 80's. If you were going to go the tv show and other stuff route I would like to see: The Fall Guy, Square Pegs, Facts Of Life, Knight Rider, and Gimme A Break.

-You gotta run original 80s commercials and concerts...You just gotta!

-Disney had a wealth of specials in the 80s, complete with 80s music, fashion and stars (Here I'm thinking of the awesome special "Totally Minnie". My VHS copy, recorded from the Disney Channel, is starting to deteriorate). I have a book on Disney television. I'll offer up examples over the next few days.

-On the show front...

-"Muppet Babies"
-"Dynasty"
-"Moonlighting"
-"Dallas"
-"Just Say Julie"
-"Pee-Wee's Playhouse"

-Recreate the MTV set and bring back every MTV VJ up to the time Nirvana released "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

-Track down copies of Farm Aid and Live Aid. Air them as weekend special events.

-Have stars host 80s movies (One program could be the EEN Monday Movie with Molly Ringwald).

-Besides classic concerts, air new concerts from these artists as well.

-How about an 80s fashion clip show set to 80s music, and we'll call it "Fashion Rewind"?

-Another program idea: "Midnight Metal"-*Enough hooks and hairspray to awake you from your sleep* See if you can get Dee Snider to host.

-Uncut, full-length 80s episodes of "Saturday Night Live"

-Bring back uncut "SCTV"

-Uncut 80s episodes of "American Bandstand" and "Solid Gold"

-I've got a few game show ideas, like "The Sample", where you have to identify 80s songs and then do things like name songs that sample the 80s classics, or hijack the mic and turntables and do freestyle rhymes yourself. Prizes could include 80s music, entertainment players, and trips to 80s-style destinations.

-A new 80s dance show, in the vein of "American Bandstand".

This idea could be awesome. When I become a screenwriter and I get enough money, I'll help Sal get EEN off the ground.

We could have a big 8-hour countdown with all the 80s fashions represented, actors, contests, get a notable 80s personality to pull a switch and launch the network...

THIS WILL BE AWESOME! TNN won't have anything on us!

Sincerely,

John "outofplacechild" Kilduff

I almost forgot...

-We should air "Saved By The Bell". We'll definitely need that show on our network.

I think that the late Spring to late Summer time period would be the right time of year to kick off the EEN. Most of the network shwows are in reruns during this time. I've noticed many specialty channels like Sci-Fi use that time for their new episodes so as to not compete directly with the networks. There is obviously enough material to pull from to fill every day. The main downside that I can see is that no 1 network really has enough to offer to create the EEN so you would need material from all of them. EVen though these shows are 11-21 years old, you can bet the networks are still gonna want profit for airing them. I think it would be neat to offer this alternative programming. Nick At Nite has some neat stuff but covers to broad a date range for me. I want to see stuff that I did when I was growing up. Cartoons like Jayce and the WHeeled Warriors! Prime Time shows like Night Rider & Six Million Dollar Man. There was even a season or 2 of new Twilight ZOne episodes that I thought were great. It would also be neat to see 80's commercials in between the shows. Many of the commercials would still be advertising for existing products (like the lite beer commercials)!

Sal,
I'm impressed. This country definitely needs improvement on their tv station material. If you had an 80's channel, it would go to the top quickly, I guarantee it.
Even in the country town I'm in, they play 80's flashback hours over the radio on the weekends. There's 80's lovers everywhere.
For shows, it would be really cool if you could maybe have "Mork and Mindy" on there. And there were some good stand-up comedians too, like VH-1 use to play. Things like that, along with movies and videos is so different from anything ever done. Especially not just mainstream videos and such.
(sorry, just some rambling off the top of my head..)

I like the classic commercials idea, too. I loved the "Wrap that thirsty smile around it, Taste that Pepsi up and down it, Come on come on, Come on come on, And have a Pepsi day". How sick is it that I remember that?!? If you ever wanna know the Tootsie Roll song, look me up!! outofplacechild should be programming director or something!!! Look at all the ideas!!

An 80's network would be very cool!
I love the idea of using 80's commercials. I'm sure the companies would pay for the time to have their commercials shown again. Their already "in the can" as they say, and the cost to those companies to have them shown again would be minimal because they wouldn't have to pay a production company to create a new one.

Hmm. I wonder about the 80s commercials. That would be pretty cool. I mean, Coca Cola and Pepsi commercials from the 80s would still work. Heck, lots of 'em would. Many of those businesses are still in business. That would work fine... I hope I can start this thing one day.

Sure, it's a dream of mine. And we have to realize that it may always be just a dream. But, as this place grows, and becomes more popular, you never know! A wealthy entrepreneur may hop on board and make this idea a reality!

Spread the word about 80sxchange.com! It's not just an 80s website and community. It's a place out here in cyberspace that could make all of us happy in more ways than it does right now. As this place gets publicity, it will attract lots of attention...

Spread the word! The 80s are comin' back!

How about food from the 80's? I remember having Frosted Rice Krispies for breakfast. There was also Fruity Marshmallow Krispies (never had those), and who could forget McDonald's Cheddar Melts? Have to miss having our favorite colas in glass bottles. And how about the all-around taste of food in general? Put food back to the way it used to be- the way food should taste.:licky:

Wow! This is really exciting! The ideas are flooding in and I'll bet there are lots of people out there like me who have tons of old shows ,commercials,specials..etc on video we could dig out!
A friend of mine and I did something similar as a fun project one time but we did a one week TV Guide with parodys of existing shows like "Wheel of Fortune" was "Wheel of Misfortune" where contestants would spin the wheel to see what torture they had to endure! Sort of a Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome sort of thing! We had movies of the week, talk shows whose topics looking back on them now, as wild as we made them, some of Springer's
has made them look like episode of "Father Knows Best"! Anyway I'll work on it and get back to you! Sounds like a fun project!

Most 80's shows I have seen one time or the other on some type of re-run. But one that I haven't seen and would love to see on the new 80's channel is "The Misfits of Science". It didn't make it through the entire 85-86 season but it was great.
Other things I'd like to see on the EEN:
1984 NBC Thursdays (cosby, fam ties, cheers, night court)
Amazing Stories
Battlestar Galactica
Buck Rogers
Duck Factory
Greatest American Hero
Its Your Move
Knight Rider
Manimal
Mr. Merlin
Powers of Matthew Star
Tales of the Gold Monkey
WKRP
Voyagers!

And my favorite 80's show Quatum Leap (began in 89 so technically is an 80's show)

We could also include a behind-the-making or a behind-the-scenes on our variety of shows on EEN. Each movie could also have some fun facts tossed in before it starts. Occasional fun facts for a TV show could be tossed in as well. This could all be in addition to bringing back popular 80's food to go along with all of these 80's shows:D

Start out the day with some workout shows from the '80s: 20 Minute Workout, Bodyshaping With Corey Everson, Richard Simmons (Well, we'd have to see how Richard did in the ratings, he might have to be let go ;)

Then have a Today show, yeah...a Yesterday show. Have interviews of '80s stars, or in lieu of guests show interviews they did in the '80s. See if Lori Loughlin would host.

Then soaps from the '80s - General Hospital back in the Rick Springfield days, Santa Barbara, All My Children, Young and the Restless, etc.

The afternoons and evenings you guys have got pretty well planned out :D

I love the idea of a show about '80s fashions - call it the Beautify America show :D

I think we should bring back those 80s video shows like TV2000, Night Flight, Friday Night Videos, Top 40 Videos and some others I can't think of. It seems like in the 80s Friday and Saturday nights there were tons of video shows. I think we should also show Solid Gold, Dance Fever and America's Top Ten.

This is a great idea just so long as we can have our cheesy 80's music shows on Saturday about 10:00 am. You know, American Bandstand, followed by Soul Train, Solid Gold and Star Search.
Then Saturday afternoon you could have series that kind of bombed an show all 4, 6, 8 episodes. You know, shows like "Police Squad" and "Hello Larry".
Sunday you could have the underrated movie show, http://www.80sxchange.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1063 .

Well, here's an idea. It may be a stupid one, but what the hell? :D How about starting the EEN over the internet? Have it set up to stream to broadband users. Or, if feasable, offer 2 streams...one for dial-up users, and one for broadband users. This might prove to be somewhat cheaper, but then again, I don't know what sort of licensing fees you would have to cough up. Also, use the WMV format for streaming, and have the broadband stream at 300 kilobits per second. That should provide good quality without killing your bandwidth if you use an OC-3 leased line or something like that. What do you think? :D

Makes me think of the Diet Pepsi commercial, lessee...how much do I remember? This is the second verse, I think...

"...that great Pepsi taste, Diet Pepsi won't go to your waist, so now you see it, now you don't, Diet Pepsi, one small calorie, now you see it, now you don't"

I used to love that show House Calls with Wayne Rogers and Lynn Redgrave. I don't know why. I'd kind of be interested in seeing it again to find out! :-)

There was also a show called "Fridays" or something like that, it was something like SNL. Or maybe it was on Friday nights but was called something completely different.

I'm afraid I could see myself staying up 'till 3 am too many nights, though. "Man, I've got to get to bed-Whoa, Tron! Okay, I'll watch up to the motorcycle scene and then I'll go to sleep." That could get ugly; I could lose my job.
