View Full Version : Virus - "G" Something?!?!
Dancingdoll1986 7-21-02, 03:26 PM I had a problem with my Windows Media player, so I decided to do a scandisk and then defragment. (Last time I defragmented was 143 days ago.) It took over 12 hours to defrag. (I am sure this is normal with my 1995 computer. Yes, it's 7 years old.)
Anywhoo.....I went to open my Outlook, (which is where I get my earthlink mail), and IT'S ALL GONE!!!!!! So, I ask Aron about it, and he runs something from trend.com and it shows that I have some virus that begins with the letter G. I tried to get Aron to explain what it does and all, and how to fix it, but since it has attacked HIS computers, my computer is not that important. (I've lost EVERY EMAIL ADDY!!!)
Okay, I need help. What do I do now? Is there someone who can help me get my Outlook stuff back? It showed that it got "archived"........can I get it out of there? Can someone please help me?!? I am totally freaking out over this, I'm crying, and Aron had to go to a client site. I just want my stuff back.
I know that this is a little thing, but I really need that stuff!
IM me at dancingdoll87 off of Yahoo.....it's gonna say that I am away, but for some reason, on my Trillian, it won't ever show me online. (I know, another one....I don't know why this is bothering me so much......sorry!) Please!!! Someone!!!:(
Would it have been the "WORM_KLEZ.G" virus? You can find info about i here (as well as removal instructions - Worm_Klez.G (http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM_KLEZ.G).
Without knowing for sure if this is the one though, it is kind of hard to troubleshoot.
As far as de-archiving your old mail, try this method and see if it works - reading archived mail. (http://www.cyberwalker.net/columns/jun01/280601.html)
Good luck. :)
Dancingdoll1986 7-22-02, 01:26 AM Thanks for your reply, Shakey!!
It was actually the Gigger virus.....and Aron had a copy of a data recovery CD and we got the whole thing back. *phew*
{{HUG}} for trying to go on the little info I actually knew to write down!!
Hey Gretchen... want a little free advice? ;)
Don't use Outlook...its a total piece of $hit. Why do I say that? I used it for about a year and had so many problems with it.
Case example: the VAST majority of email viruses are written for Outlook. I have been using Eudora (its free) for almost a year now, and I have downloaded TONS of viruses that were in emails (obviously not on purpose). I have never had one crash my machine, because I don't use Outlook. It sucks, plain and simple.
The email is VERY proprietary. I tried to export mine to Eudora and Outlook will not do it. It refuses to. Once you use Outlook, you are stuck with your mail in there. I looked for an export utility and never found one. And like I say, almost every email virus out there was designed for Outlook. I have had Outlook lose my email, corrupt my inbox, and cause so many problems. Eudora has never done that to me.
Hey some people love it and have never had problems with it. My g/f used Outlook and after a few months she had TONS of viruses. I switched her to Eudora... no problems since.
Just some advice. :D
Glad you got your problem taken care off. :) Sorry I wasn't even close.
As for Outlook? It works well at work (mainly for its calendaring function - I just can't remember meetings :D ). At home though, I mainly use web based mail. About the only time I use my POP account is when a friend and I are tranferring files. It's just easier to get to them locally than having to log into my web based account. Other than that though, it pretty much goes unused.
80sSmurf 7-22-02, 05:26 PM  You can almost hear the WOOHOOOOs, finally our resident tech-nuts got to solve a problem (well almost) .... Guess you guys are doing too good a job, since the posts in here has dropped ;)
Dancingdoll1986 7-23-02, 12:15 AM I was going to try Eudora, but I am afraid to try it without someone standing over my shoulder, walking me through it. I don't want to screw it up somehow and lose my emails!!
Aron got home late from a client site, (actually, at 11pm, I had to go pick him up), and he has to be back out there at 7am, (YUP, I have to drive him back out there as well). So, hopefully, I can get him to help me out with it tomorrow.....or sometime before Outlook crashes again!!
You guys are the bestest!!! Big {{{{HUGS}}}} and ****smoooches**** to each of you!!!
~Gretchen
Have no fear, Gretchen. It's pretty simple. I'll try to make things easier for you. :)
To download Eudora - Click here (http://www.eudora.com/cgi-bin/export.cgi?productid=EUDORA_win_511)
For a guide on setting it up - Click here (http://www.eudora.com/download/eudora/windows/5.1/QckStart.pdf) Please note that this is a .pdf document. That means that you need Adobe Acrobat Reader installed. You probably already have it, but just in case you don't, you can get it here. (http://download.com.com/3000-2378-8338119.html?tag=lst-0-1)
It should be pretty straight forward, but if you have any problems, let me know. :)
I have been using it. outlook express crashes (http:// www.oemailrecovery.com/outlook-express-crash.html) and outlook express dbx recovery (http://www.mail-repair.com/outlook-express-recovery.html) more stable and secure than other programs.
Oh the dreaded Virus. Im an ex PC Technician. The ammount of these i've removed from clients PC's i cant count. But i would surgest a good Anti-Virus software package. I use AVG and their Firewall too. There is a free version available. But i use the paid-for version :) www.grisoft.com
