The video and the lyrics to this song have given me a puzzler for...well close to 15 years. The video I believe had an MTV slate that said it was from the soundtrack to some movie. The video itself looks like a movie video.

However, I can't find any reference to any movie tied into this song that suggests the science fiction/rebellion attitude I get.

I remember some news report (who know...maybe Kurt Loder) talking about two human kids who find out that their dad is actually a general for an alien Race.
I've been searching this for quite some time and would love to hear any input... even if you just remember the video. But mostly, if you have any details into this famed yet elusive (and possibly mystical) film

I've Also Always wondered about this Song/Video, ever since I was little and remember seeing it, I was in awe. The Video was Awesome.

I remember my Mother telling me something that it had to do with "The Philadelphia Expirement" in 1943(Which is an Interesting Topic at that) Unfortunately I couldn't draw a conclusion, the Video didn't seem to have any link to the Events of it...

The Lyrics are rather Intriguing like you said earlier tonite in chat.
Now you've got me Searching the Net for "The Answer" :D
I'll do some more looking into it. :)

Silent Running - Mike + the Mechanics

Take the children and yourself
And hide out in the cellar
By now the fighting will be close at hand
Don't believe the church and state
And everything they tell you
Believe in me, I'm with the high command

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

There's a gun and ammunition
Just inside the doorway
Use it only in emergency
Better you should pray to God
The Father and the Spirit
Will guide you and protect from up here

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

Swear allegiance to the flag
Whatever flag they offer
Never hint at what you really feel
Teach the children quietly
For some day sons and daughters
Will rise up and fight while we stood still

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

Can you hear me running (can you hear me calling you?)
(Can you hear me) hear me calling you?
(Can you hear me running) hear me running babe?
(Can you hear me running) hear me running?
Calling you, calling you

I initially liked this song but as with most good songs it was played to death!

I remember something about this too but I cant quite recall the name of the film!

I remember them finding a crystal in the closet and almost like a dimensional portal. I really remember someone commenting about the plot of this film. So I really think it was indeed real.

I made more of a post on my blog at:

This is without a doubt my favourite Mike & Mechanics song. All though I have no idea what it's about. It wasn't as over played as "Living Years", which I ended up hating in the end.

The movie was called "On dangerous ground" hence the sub-title to the song "Silent running (On dangerous ground)". I love Mike +the Mechanics, vastly underrated at the time. They need to release a greatest hits!

I never realized there was a film.

I just thought the song was about a man leaving his family to go to war, and telling his wife to do the right thing, but secretly, to keep herself and the kids safe. ;)

Already done DJ - entitled 'Mike And The Mechanics - Hits' released about 5 years ago in the UK.

Needless to say it was a very popular release. :)

Hey Dan, please enlighten Andrei and I about this movie, can you give us some information about it??? both of us have been researching this since the beginning of time  and have come up short, I have looked everywhere and have found no movies titled "On Dangerous Ground" that come even close to this video plot wise, I've found a few B&W Silent Films from 1915, 1916, and 1917 :goofy: which aren't even in the same frame of mind, and a Love Film from 1951 which is not anything to do with this Vid either.

The closest I've come to putting this puzzle together is a movie from 1971 Titled "Silent Running" and though it's a Sci-Fi movie, the plot doesn't match up from what I remember about the Video, I'd have to see the video again, and I haven't seen it anywhere online :( so if you have any information you can give us it would be Greatly appreciated :*:*

P.S. Don't forget, I ove you Dan

I found this on a movie site...

Mike and the Mechanics:
"Silent Running" depicts life after a major war; as far as I can tell, it's unrelated to the SF film starring Bruce Dern.

This is the site link:

Thanks for the link Val, but unfortunately that is the same movie I talked about in my earlier reply  and there wasn't much else on that page about "Mike and the Mechanics" other than that little quote :(

OK, this thread is prehistoric, but I'd been wondering about this and the thread came up on a google search...so, just wanted to tell anyone else who's interested that the movie's alternate title is "Choke Canyon"...here's the IMDB page:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090836/

And you can buy some cheap used copies from amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/630018966X/102-2943401-0856950

A reviewer on amazon says:

Footage for "Choke Canyon" was used in the cool video "Silent Running" ("Can you hear me? Can you hear me running?"). You may remember that as the video in which a young boy receives a package from his long-lost father, takes the package to a room in his house filled with light and, in front of his shocked mom, disappears. (The enigmatic imagery suggests that the father is involved in some otherworldly intrigue and has sent for his son to join him). Unfortunately, "Choke Canyon" has nothing to do with that video's proto-"X-Files" plot, but is nonetheless an interesting flick.
