View Full Version : who lifts weights here?
sketcher 7-15-02, 03:07 PM hiya!
Just wondering which of us 80s junkies works out? I do and I go to a gym (so much motivation there than at home!). I've been working out for over 7 years now but it's always been off-and-on kind of thing. Now I'm really dedicated to it (because my getting-old-now-fat genes are kicking in!).
So, who else here pumps iron?
I go to the gym to try to work out for Football, so although I do lift weights it's not what you would call proper bar work. I don't arm curl more than 15.5lb as I don't want to put too much bulk, moreso just keep the shoulders broad. I'll also concentrate on some stomach exercises as much as I loathe them.
I find that it's easy to overdo going to the gym, and I believe you do need your rest days. I try to balance it out with Football practice on Mondays, Gym Wednesday and Friday with Football circuits on a Sunday morning.
Sheesh - that only leaves 3 days for my wife.....
kissintime 7-15-02, 04:48 PM I lift weight 4-5 times a week. I mix it in with cardio too. Ive only started since last sept..... (when i hit the ol' 35! ;) ) It been hard because Ive never been big on physical excercise before. Fourntunately , Ive never needed to do this to lose weight.... just trying to tone and maintain.
ImSoooSure 7-16-02, 01:50 AM I use weights too. I got into it in college. Then sort of fell out of it and got back to it a few years ago. I really enjoy weights. I mix cardio now too. The weights are so much more fun though!
DC Rebel 7-16-02, 01:58 AM I normally lift between four and six days a week. However, in my current condition, I am not really lifting that much weight for the time being. I still lift, but I only lift weights that will not put my lower back in a bad position. Plus, I am only lifting about one fourth the weight that I used to lift.
Roemello 7-16-02, 02:36 AM I'm another off and on person :p Right now I'm in 'on' mode :D 4-5 days a week for me in my cheap little home gym  Whenever I feel like my strength is slippin a little, I start hitting the weights a lot...someday I may actually put together some consistency and stick with it :p
space-invader 7-17-02, 05:34 AM i go once or twice a week these days (been doing it for about 8 years) just to keep my strength up, but not really to bulk up or anything like that
also do a lot of stretching and balancing exercises
That Guy Next Door 7-17-02, 06:50 AM I go from three times to six a week when the gym is open and that's it ! During vacations try to go twice a day ! i got a pretty light frame and I'm pretty thin and all want is to keep my wasp waist look ( you know the shoulder/waist ratio, when it's high ! ). Other than that i always have been fit cause I kinda hanged with firemen for a while .....
I won't dwell at unnecessary lenght on the matter .....
TGND " so my straight answer is yes, i lift ! "
I do about 3-4 times a week of lifting and run 4-5 miles a day4-5 times a week depending on time. Since I turned 30 the weight is harder to keep off.
That Guy Next Door 7-17-02, 07:34 AM ;) 4-5 miles a day, 4 times at the gym, 6 days a week ... reminds me of someone ..... why, maybe me !!!! ;);) Way to go pal !
TGND " Uhm, nah, I'm not gonna change my sig to put AMK in :D "
I had to stop last month since they raised the cost for membership. But I would jog 3 miles 4 times a week and I would lift weights after I would jog. Now I just watch what I eat. I will start again soon .. since like AMK said.. it is hard to keep the weight off when you reach our age.
sketcher 7-17-02, 09:04 AM It's rare for me to meet others who are into weightlifting. Me, I'm doing it to bulk up and tone down (hard to do both).
I went back to the gym on Monday fter a month and a half hiatus due to my vacation and to my surprise, I had the best workout ever. You know that 'pump' you feel? I had that with EVERY exercise I did.
I went yesterday (leg day) and it was the opposite. I wonder how Friday will be (shoulder day!).
That Guy Next Door 7-17-02, 09:19 AM There so many things i love when you workout till failure .... the blood rush, the hormonal rush, the endomorphine rush, the blood bounce , the catabolism , uhm .... feels like an out of body experince .... gotta try it, once !
TGND " Gym is safe harbour to me ! "
Some of the best workouts i ever had were after giving my body a couple weeks rest. I have some friends that compete on stage and have trained alot with them in the past(no juice for me, i like my package just the way it is). when lifting for bulk you have to go heavy or it is all in vain, my bod doesn't like heavy anymore so i just lift to tune up. diet is the key to cuttin up, cut out most carbs and load up on the protien(but don't forget the air freshener).

That's what I did all those years. I didn't go heavy. It was all in vain... :( But this time it'll be different. And I totally cheated on my diet, too. But now, look out world!
But yes, the air fresheners is a good tip for protein...
In 'vain' might have been the wrong word, but trust me when I tell you that you have to go heavy and try to failure on your last set to really get those muscles to blow up. No more than 5-6 reps worked best for me. Free advice, take it or leave it, but one more thing......Stretch before, during , and after.........
Caligula 7-17-02, 01:43 PM Yeah I played around alot of years in the gym, sometimes i would disappear from the gym for a couple years, but my last stint was 1993-97 where i was basically doing a 4 day on 1 day off routine, I was only concerned with gaining mass and stregnth, so everything I did was basically heavy with low reps , and lots of forced and negative reps. God i never did cardio, which i should have definately been doing, or ate properly.. now that i don't go to the gym and never will again, i should have watched what i ate.
I may ate sometime, i might buy an 8 foot bar, real plates and a bench and start training at home, but hitting the gym of fitnerss centre just doesn't appeal to me anymore

I believe and I will take it!
In fact, I was looking up some information on the ol' www about slow reps coincidentally and I've decided to start doing that with my workouts. So, in 6 months time, I hope to post a message saying 'I KNEW YOU WERE RIGHT AMK27!' (and of course everyone else who wrote the same, like Caligula ;)).
That Guy Next Door 7-18-02, 06:08 AM negatives is a definite must !!! however ... DIET ???? I'm french , remmeber, no way I can diet with all the irressitible food around, no way sir ... fortunately genetics are on my side :D:D How I ache for people who have to diet ...... I agree totally with AMK, failure on last rep is just sooo good !
TGND " Is that like the bulk in the gym club here ? "

I'm Italian. All those carbs preventing cutting...
I started back lifting weights today. I know I am going to dread it tomorrow. I think I over did it.
I am going to lift 5 times a day but I only have 30 min. to do it. Is this a good thing to do?
30 minutes a day is plentyof time to lift weights. Try concentrating on a body part or two a day and you should be happy with the results.
Thanks AMK
I am concentrating on my arms, abs, and thighs. Those seem to be the hardest for me to get trim :(
