View Full Version : Your first computer?
Since I got my first computer in the 80's, I figured this might make for an interesting topic. How many others got their first system in the 80's and what was it?
My very first was a Commodore Vic 20 (my first system used with a modem. BBS's were awesome :) ). From there I moved up to a TI99/4A with the peripheral box (high tech at the time with a 5.25" floppy drive...). :D After that I got a Commodore 64.
So what was your first and when did you get it?
My first computer I owned was a Commodore 128. I got the 128 because of the "super graphics" I saw on the screenshots for "The rocky horror picture show" game. Sadly the game stunk, and I mainly used the C64 feature ;)
Shakey: Remember the game "Garden Wars" for the Vic20? I used to play it a lot at my fathers place - simple shooter, but I thought it was wonderfull at the time :)
LOSTNTHE80S 7-04-02, 07:29 AM Actually, we got our first computer only about 6 years ago. We bought it from my brother in law. Not sure what it was. It was just to mess around on. We have only been on the internet for about 3 years.
space-invader 7-04-02, 08:06 AM i can vaguely remember a post like this before, but i can't be bothered hunting for it....
my first computer was in 1985...an apple II compatable (a whopping 64K!)....no hard drive, dot matrix printer, 5 1/4' diskettes, green monitor, no mouse (hell, windows wasn't around then)
80sSmurf 7-04-02, 01:10 PM 1st: Spectrum ZX81 hooked up with an ordinary taperecorder
2nd: C64, no extras
3rd Amiga 500 (+ the 512k ram expansion), with an extra external 5.1/4" floppydrive, and a bootselector a friend made for me
4th: 486dx, 66MhZ, 4mb ram, ca. 500mb hardrive ... can't remember what gfx card, souncard was an old SoundBlaster
5th: Pentium 100, 8mb ram, 1.2gb harddrive, same old SounBlaster card

Our first computer was an Atari 400 with either 16k or 64k of memory (I forget now), top loading cartridges, and a cassette player to load games off. That was around 1982.
In late 1983 we got our first decent machine. A Tandy 2000. I started using it in 1984. It sported a 80186 processor, 512k of memory, a 5 1/4" full height 10 meg hard disk, a 5 1/4" 730k floppy (extremely rare), and a monochrome monitor. For those who have never heard of the 2000, its a big piece of $hit that is barely IBM PC compatible. Over 50% of PC software would not run on that thing. It finally died in the summer of 1990, right before I bought my first IBM XT.
There wasn't a lot I could do with the Tandy. We ran Fido and Opus bulletin boards with it, used Turbo Pascal, Volkswriter for a word processor, and some really basic dialers. Most games would not work on it.
As I said, it sucked.
Then I got my 8088 XT in 1990 with 640k memory, dual floppies (hard disks were still WAY expensive), CGA, and my Supra 2400 baud modem. Worked great! I still have it all today!
My first computer was a TI-99/4a. It had some excellent games. Mine had a speech synthesizer and a cassette player, though there were other options you could add on as well.:)
Shakey, remember playing any of these games: Zero-Zap, Munchmobile, Slymoids, Moonmine (where you excavate gems while fighting off aliens), Return to Pirates Isle, and Star Trek?:D

I can't say that I know that one. I really dug my adventure games back then though.

Definitely remember Return to Pirates Isle! I loved that game. Used to play that one for hours. :)
