View Full Version : The Gap Band
djdaffy1227 6-26-02, 06:07 PM You can't have a R&B, funk conversation without the Gap Band. With party classics like "You dropped a bomb on me", "Party train" and "I don't believe you want to get up and dance (oops)" to roller skating essentials like "Early in the morning" and "Outstanding", they were the Temtations of 80's dance and funk. Making the Dazz Band the Four Tops (but that'll be another thread  ) They only charted 5 singles on the pop charts but charted 33 R&B singles including 4 #1's, and 24 top 40 R&B singles. They came out of the funk capital of the world....Tulsa Oklahoma (that was a little joke  ) They took their name from three streets in their home town, Greenwood, Archer and Pine. I would highly reccomend The Gap Band's Ultimate Collection on Hip-o records. One of my favorites by them was "I'm gonna git u sucka" from the movie of the same name. What do you think?
Mr. Badd 6-26-02, 06:22 PM To me, the Gao Band was one of, if not the best band of the 80's. Humpin had a sound never heard before, and many of the tracks on Gap Band 3 and 4 which never were released were great too, like Season's No Reason to Change and Lonely Like Me.
Iluvthe80s 6-26-02, 08:05 PM Probably my favorite band of the R&B/Funk genre. I love "You Dropped A Bomb On Me".
Greenway88 6-27-02, 05:05 PM This is a great group. You Dropped a Bomb on Me is not only an R&B essential, it's an 80s essential. I like Early in the Morning and Burn Rubber also.
Prefab Sprouter 7-01-02, 06:28 AM Hey Good Thread DJ, Did they also have a song called "Take it to the Bank"?
Greenway88 7-01-02, 09:47 AM Wasn't Party Train the theme song for Soul Train?
djdaffy1227 7-01-02, 05:35 PM First, I LOVE the song "Seasons no reason to change". Second I couldn't find a charted song called "Take it to the bank", However, that doesn't mean there isn't one. Third, I don't believe "Party train" was ever used as the theme to Soul Train.
Mr. Badd 7-02-02, 01:33 AM It wasn't. I have all their CD's/Records, (or i thought), don't see "Take it to the Bank" either.
Mna, I loved "You Dropped A Bomb On Me"! That reminds me of riding around with my friends in the 80's. :) We used to listen to that song all the time.
"Party Train" great video and "Humpin" great song and the dance that went with it was live also.
The Gap Band was a good party band. I always liked "Party Train" and another one I like is "I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up and Dance (Oops, Up Side Your Head)." It's a funny song.
The Gap Band songs I remember most are "Burn Rubber (On Me)" and "You Dropped A Bomb On Me."
 Now I know that everyone says that Gap Band is a great Funk Band but! you cannot forget "Kool and the Gang" I mean "Celebration" is still played at wedding receptions and "Ladies Night", also of which "Kool and the Gangs" older songs still get sampled by some groups today. Another group which still gets sampled by groups today is "ZAPP" with such hits as "More bounce to the ounce" (which actually put them on the map) "So ruff so tuff" "I can make you dance" "Heartbreaker" "Do wah ditty" and others, along with the help of the late "Roger Troutman". Their home town is Dayton Ohio.
:D :)
djdaffy1227 7-12-02, 08:09 PM from one DJ to the next. You are right about Kool and the Gang and Zapp, in fact I'll start threads on them, or you can ;)
Mr. Badd 7-12-02, 11:55 PM Some others not to be over looked are Midnight Star, And especially the S.O.S. Band
Mr. Badd you are right! I was just playing S.O.S not to long ago.
I remember riding around with a eight tract recording of S.O.S Band in my "1986" Malibu Classic with red interior (the sun had a field day) had to stop and rewind the tape for some reason. It was loud though.
Mr. Badd 7-16-02, 05:31 PM LOL!
I loved The Gap Band.. "You dropped a bomb on me" and "Burn Rubber" were classic songs! The S.O.S. Band were another favorite and The Dazz Band's "Let[ it Whip" and "Joystick" remind me of them too!!!
I liked "Burn Rubber" & "You Dropped The Bomb" but if you really want to dance, "Humpin'" was my song...
Mr. Badd 8-09-02, 01:02 AM Humpin ain't for dancin, baby!
tikijimmy 8-21-02, 10:42 PM "Burn Rubber" is essential in any funk fans collection.
It's right up there with the P-Funk stuff.
geminiduran 8-23-02, 06:55 PM i always confused the dazz band and the gap band for some reason but i like you drop the bomb on me and let it whip alot those are R+B classics.
whistledog 11-16-04, 01:28 AM There's a new version of 'Oops Upside Your Head' by dance artist DJ Casper. It uses samples from the Gap Band and does it ever sound cool :thumb:
