Formed in New York City with Jalil "Whodini" Hutchins and John "Ecstacy" Fletcher and joined in 1986 by DJ Grandmaster Dee. They were an early rap group that was essential for any breakdancer to have blasting from their Boombox. Their biggest R&B hit came in 1988 while paired with Midnight Star for the song "Rock the boat" but had other big hits on the R&B charts earlier in the 80's with "Friends", "Five minutes of funk", "One love" and the CLASSIC "Freaks come out at night". Anyone else a fan?

I am. I got their greatest hits a while back. Great CD. I remember when Haunted House of Rock came out, we threw a big Holloween party just because of that song

I haven't heard any Whodini, but I always thought they had one of the best names in music, ever.

Thanks for the offer DJ. I do like a funny rap song occasionally like "You be Illin'", but I'm not that big a fan of rap.

Their first charted R&B single was "Magic's wand" which was written by, believe it or not, Thomas Dolby.
That's the song I remember them for, Thomas Dolby also played keyboards on the track.

A friend and I used to have a mutual stealing of the picture disc 7" of magics wand from each other. We still keep in contact and I'll steal it back one day. I picked up the green vinyl 12" of haunted house of rock whilst on holiday in Belgium. Must have been '83 ish....Thomas Dolby! She blinded me with science from the LP 'the golden age of wireless 1982. One of the first CD's I bought along with jean michelle jarre. Dont forget Dolby produced George Clinton & Prefab Sprout and played keyboard on tracks by Lena Lovich, Foreigner, Joan Armatrading, Def Lepperd, Malcolm Mcclaren, Bowie, Berlinda Carlisle and the excellent Ryuichi Sakamoto which links us to Japan. Did they reach USA/Canada? But hey, isn't this the R'n'B section? Who said crossover.........

They were the Crank back in the day. I remember going to the "Raising Hell" tour to see Whodini I still have the tickect from 1986. They went hand in hand with "Run-Dmc" I have the "One Love" 12 inch. It was like they came with more R&B flavor and "Run-Dmc" and L.L. Cool J. were more hard core.

The Freaks Come Out At Night and Five Minutes Of Funk. Great stuff. If I think about it for a minute I am sure I can STILL recite the lyrics to "freaks". Great song, great group.
