View Full Version : The one thing I don't like about the world cup

I hate the way the game time works. Why does it count up? With so much technology why can't the clock countdown. For stoppage time you can have the timekeeper stop the clock and resume when the ball goes back in play. With all due respect to the ref in charge but it would make more sense to do it this way. There would be no more questioning time this way. Just me rambling. Thanks. Other then that, I am really enjoying the world cup.

Yeah, DJ, I understand. It seems so weird because we're always counting down in sports like basketball and hockey. But actually I kind of like that fact that you don't know exactly when the game is going to end.

This was considered a few years back, but FIFA and UEFA abandoned the thought, since games would get very lenghty, and they wanted to avoid a situation where one team just needs a goal, or is holding on to a tight lead, and then hearing 50.000 people counting down from ... say 10. That would put too much pressure on the ref, especially if one team has an open chance and he has to end the game as the ball is heading for the net :)

That's why

Get leghthy? They're not now? The crowd counting down isn't a good argument either, you can't stop the crowd, you just need to focus on the game, ask the American team vs South Korea. As for the last argument, in basketball if you throw the ball just before the time is over it counts if it goes in, if the ball is still in the players hand (or on his foot in this case) as time runs out, it doesn't count.

EDIT:

I see what you are saying about a team going towards the net, but if they aren't there in time, sucks to be them. Those are the breaks, ask the Tennessee Titans a few years ago in the Super Bowl when they were near the end-zone when time ran out because they used all their time outs....that kind of thing makes for some GREAT endings. To me it isn't fair for the team in the lead if the ref lets the game go a couple of extra seconds so the team who is down can tie the game.

No they're not lenghty now, they're just about perfect ;)

Oh and I just said what FIFA and UEFA said back then ... Honestly I've never given this any thought, I'm used to this (and the clock counting up), but I see you're point, it could make for some very interesting endings if the time was strict (can time be strict, or is my engrish gettin' worse ?? ;) )

Another reason why injury time varies is to prevent teams from bleeding the clock, like the Americans tried against Portugal. The referee adds as much time as he finds suiting, so teams won't get any advantage when they take 3 mins to take a corner kick.

I don't know. I never questioned the rules really, apart from the ridiculous offside rule. Then again, I also grew up watching the clock like it is, so you are messing with the holy grail here, DJ. ;)

Cool that you guys enjoy the games. You chose the right World Cup. I can't remember a better WC in my entire life.

I never thought of that. You have a very good point, Daffy.

I have a slightly different opinion on the timekeeping...I think it should be exactly 2x45 mins and that was it (BTW, same should be valid for tennis  ). No overtime.

This way, some of the more "theatrical talented" players would have to be forced to shorten their "performance" (whenever I see some of them rolling around on the green after a slight tackling, my thoughts are "Ref...give that man the coup de grace", but then Bayern München would never see a 2nd half due to the lack of players :D) in an attempt to squeeze out more time out of the game. It would also make the game a bit more stringent - I simply hate to see it if a player checks the exact meterological conditions before a free kick.

Scoring the points of a game...in my opinion, only the victorious team should be awarded with points. This would prevent the tactic of achieving a draw for the "rescueing" point - fight and win or leave it and lose. For a fair amount of goals during a game (for example, say a team striked 4 times without sinking the leather in the own goal), an extra point should be awarded, even for the losing team (if it also had striked more than the needed amount, that is).

From time to time...well, I have to admit that I'm not that deep into it like Pippi, Smurf, Prefab, Harket and all the others I have not mentioned, but on the other hand, F1-racing is only every 2-3 weeks.

Now Mr. Badd. Dont go down that road. We're all friends here who repsect other peoples likes and dislikes. Trying to get a reaction out of people just isnt fair play!

Well won't work on me anyway *shrugs*

Going slightly off topic here;
Wavey .... I like F1 too, tho' I'm dissapointed at this years season, the championship is basically over, since I find it unbelievable that Michael should throw his huge lead away ....

Give it 1-2 years more and the other teams will have caught up to Ferrari .... I'm really looking forward to see what Toyota will be able to do :p

I respect other people's likes. They are free to like a sport that is for guys who can't play football or baseball. I mean, we used to let the soccer guys eat lunch in the same cafeteria and stuff. Sometimes, they can become decent field goal kickers!
