i've downloaded an avi file, which i take should be a movie, but i get no visuals...is it that the file is corrupt or do i need something other than windows media player (which i upgraded to latest version)??

That's because you flik probably is in DivX (sometimes aka mpeg4). That's a powerfull codec that allows you to compress video and maintaining a high level of quality at the same time. Mpeg4 is basically the video equvilant of mp3.

WMA never really was any good at installing new components/codecs, you should go HERE (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=31921&area=search&ordinal=2) and grab the latest pack of codecs yourself. Just run it, when it's downloaded (it'll install itself)

After that go to http://www.divx.com/divx/ for the latest DivX codec bundle and player (it's only a 3mb download). You get both the codecs and an ace mediaplayer :thumb: (note: if you don't want the mediaplayer, you can choose to only install the codec)

Let me know if this helped :p

In addition to Smurfs post...depending on the ripping/coding process, some files won't be played by the DiVX player, no matter which codecs are installed (don't ask me why...I have to admit that I'm a newbie in this field ;)).

I have found out that another movie player is playing nearly all kind of movie files, its the Zoom player (you can download it here (http://www.chip.de/downloads_updates/download_starten_193780.html?t=1023635145&v=3600) ).

One last word of warning: if you don't disable certain settings of the latest version of the Windows Media Player, it will tell Bill Gates about the movies you have watched with it...make sure that it can't connect to the Internet before playing any files.

Since I have refrained from upgrading the WMP, I can't exactly give you the exact instructions - just head for the options and disable everything which requires an Internet connection, like automatic search for updates and so on.
Like almost everything which was intended for XP, the WMP is also suffering from the "E.T.-Syndrome" - it always wants to call home. :D
