I had to upgrade to Internet Explorer 6 and now hyperlinks don't open, when I click on them I get a "kerrang" ricochet bullet sound effect and nothing happens. Exact same thing if I try to open a new window or open IE6 a second time. I'm using Windows 98, and that box in Tools --> Internet Options --> Programs is checked on, if that means anything.

I recently upgraded to IE 6 as well, but I've never seen or heard about the problem you're describing there Chris

As for the richochet bullet sound, haven't heard that one either, I'm not even sure it's part of Windows. You usually get a DONG when something's wrong.

Are you sure you got completely rid of that virus ???

I have AntiVir on here now which squashed the virus (and found a second which it squashed as well) and I also downloaded and executed two small programs specifically designed to kill the specific virus I had, so I'm pretty sure it's gone, although the damage it did is not.

I still had IE5 after this happened it was working fine, but since the virus killed my Outlook Express I figured I might as well upgrade to IE6 to get OE back. When I did so, this browser problem started. I guess if I can't fix it I'll have to go back to IE5 again and see what happens.

Do you mean the one that checks if IE is your default browser? That wouldn't affect your ability to click on a hyperlink.

As far as the sound goes, I would guess that it is just one of your system sounds that you have set up.

It sounds like something went wrong with your install. Try to run the repair utility on it.

Go to the Control Panel
Open up Add/Remove Programs
Select Microsoft Internet Explorer 6
Click the Add/Remove button
Check Repair Internet Explorer
Click on the OK button

If that doesn't work, then try to re-install it. Let me know what happens.

I did a li'l search and couldn't find anybody else experiencing this problem, but I think Shakey is right, this could be a bad install (*slaps forehead for not thinking about that option* :)

I ran the 'repair' and when that didn't work, re-installed. That didn't work either and it doesn't want to install IE 5.5 over top of 6 (I guess I could try to delete something but I'm worried about screwing things up worse).

How a long ago did you install Win98 ??

I'm asking coz windows tend to get more and more unstable over time, steadily decreasing stability untill it finally crashes .... That's M$ for ya

The last total re-install must have been January, after I brought it back to school from holidays. I really don't want to re-install from scratch again because I needed a lot of help and waiting time from college tech to get my internet hooked up to the school, and with very little staff here for summer it will be even harder.

After being really reluctant to mess with anything for fear of making things worse, I uninstalled IE6, reverted to IE5, and this particular problem went away. I have no idea what caused the problem with IE6.
