On this day in...

1981 - Near Mansi, India: Driver of train carrying over 500 passengers, braked to avoid hitting cow, causing train to plunge off a bridge into Baghmati River; 268 passengers were reported killed, but at least 300 more were missing.
(Now do you believe they take their cows seriously in India?)

1985 - authorities in Embu, Brazil, exhumed a body later identified as the remains of Dr. Josef Mengele, the notorious "Angel of Death" of the Nazi Holocaust.

1989 - at the funeral of the Ayatollah Khomeini, mourners pull the religious leader's body from its coffin and remove shreds of clothing as holy souvenirs.
