I don't know if anyone knew this or posted it yet, but I just read on a site I was evaluating that William Hanna (one half of the infamous Hanna Barbera along with Joseph Barbera), died on 3/23/01 at the age of 90 http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//CRYING2.gif

Yeah! I read about that. It's the end of an era in the cartoon industry. He created the classics that even today entertain kids (of all ages) everywhere. He will be missed!

If I'm here and your here doesn't that make it our time?

I had missed hearing about that. Sad day indeed. Those were some great cartoons they created.

Oh no! They were my favourite cartoons. First Jim Henson now William Hanna. Just before I read this I was thinking would it be one of them and it was. Sad day in cartoons indeed. But we will always remember the joy the cartoons gave us.

Remember too when Jim Henson and Mel Blanc died? Isn't it funny how these people who we never even see on the screen touch our lives?

Mel Blanc...the man of a thousand voices. At least in Mel's case, his voice lives on through Bugs, Tweety, Daffey, Porky, Sylvester, Yosemite, and the whole gang of Looneys that still air to this day http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif

It's just like any artist or creative mind....you don't have to see them to be touched by them. Their work does it all http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Of course I have to add to this list.... Charles Schultz! I mean... the highlight of the holidays was the Charlie Brown cartoons!!! I have a story about Charles Schultz before he was famous.... I will find it and post it.

Also, when hubby and I were in Florida, we went into a Warner Bros Store and I can't completely remember the picture, but it was an animated cell. It had an old fashioned microphone on a stand in the spotlight.... and standing behind it out of the spotlight was a few, if not all of the characters that Mel Blanc did the voices for. They had their hands clasped behind them, their eyes closed and heads bowed and it was simply titled...."Speechless"!!
OMG!!! It was UNREAL how it effected me!!! My eyes are watering right now just thinking about it!! LOL!!
I just stood there in awe and all my childhood cartoon memories came flooding back to me.... it was like I went into a zone!!!
I wanted to buy it soo bad, but it was 2 or 3 hundred dollars or more....

I wish I could find a pic of that on the net... maybe I will look sometime when I'm bored.

Ok here is the Charles Schultz story..... enjoy!!

Sparky

For Sparky, school was all but impossible. He failed every subject in the eighth grade. He flunked physics in high school, getting a grade of zero. Sparky also flunked Latin, algebra and English. He didn't do much better in sports. Although he did manage to make the school's golf team, he promptly lost the only important match of the season. There was a consolation match; he lost that, too.

Throughout his youth Sparky was awkward socially. He was not actually disliked by the other students; no one cared that much. He was astonished if a classmate ever said hello to him outside of school hours. There's no way to tell how he might have done at dating. Sparky never once asked a girl to go out in high school. He was too afraid of being turned down.

Sparky was a loser. He, his classmates...everyone knew it. So he rolled with it. Sparky had made up his mind early in life that if things were meant to work out, they would. Otherwise he would content himself with what appeared to be his inevitable mediocrity. However, one thing was important to Sparky - drawing. He was proud of his artwork. Of course, no one else appreciated it.

In his senior year of high school, he submitted some cartoons to the editors of the yearbook. The cartoons were turned down. Despite this particular rejection, Sparky was so convinced of his ability that he decided to become a professional artist.
After completing high school, he wrote a letter to Walt Disney Studios. He was told to send some samples of his artwork, and the subject for a cartoon was suggested.

Sparky drew the proposed cartoon. He spent a great deal of time on it and on all the other drawings he submitted. Finally, the reply came from Disney Studios. He had been rejected once again. Another loss for the loser. So Sparky decided to write his own autobiography in cartoons. He described his childhood self - a little boy loser and chronic underachiever. The cartoon character would soon become famous worldwide. For Sparky, the boy who had such a lack of success in school and whose work was rejected again and again, was Charles Schultz.

He created the "Peanuts" comic strip and the little cartoon character whose kite would never fly and who never succeeded in kicking a football, Charlie Brown.

They all made the world a better place to live in. They may be gone, but their contributions and the laughter they brought to us live on.

Sounds like something I'd say http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//eek.gif Yeah, all of them are immortalized in their work, so in essence, they're not really dead at all! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif
