Has anyone here used Kaillera with either the JNES or PCAE Atari 2600 emulators? I 've never used an emulator w/Kaillera before. I have Kaillera Server v .86 and Kaillera Client SDK v.9.

I have cable modem for my connection.

Here are the emulators I have:

JNESv0.40 beta 2
PCAE win. 2.6 w/Direct X Program and Documentation

How do I go about integrating the emulators w/Kaillera? Where do I put the rom files, in the emu folders or the Kaillera folders?

I can't find "netplay" in the JNES emu. However, I found "network play" in the PCAE emu. In the JNES emu I found a "player 1" and a "player 2" in the pull-down menu. Is this any relation to having Kaillera?

Sorry. Never even heard of "Kaillera" before. I had to go look it up on the web. Sounds interesting. Kind of an emulator server, huh?

More like a client Shakey .... It logs on to a server and let's you play all your oldtime faves on the net :thumb:

Boogle; Just install Kalliera, don't tamper with your roms folder (the emu still needs that to start and play the game). After you installed Kalliera, just click on Network Play in PCAE and Kalliera should take care of the rest .... It should find a server for ya :p

Never tried JNES so I really don't know where the netplay option is ... all I know is that JNES supports Kalliera :)

The 1 & 2 player options are probably not for netplay, sounds more like the setup if you and a buddy wants to take a bout on your computer.

Thanks, Smurf. That sounds cool. Does that mean you can play against others or does it free you from the need for ROMS?

You still need the rom yourself Shakey, but you will be able to play against other people :thumb:

I haven't tried this myself, but from what I've read, you can also set up your own games-server with Kalliera :p

I thought you said it wasn't a server? Are you messing with my mind? Please don't! There is precious little of it left. :vibrator:

 You know me Shakey, always trying to mess with ya ;)

Actually Kaillera can be used as both a client to find netgames, or you can use it to setup your own computer as a server .... I think this is due to the fact, that dedicated emulator games servers are hard to find (did that make any sense ?? ). This way people can arrange for a netgame being setup, without having to search for a games setrver first :)

"Kaillera is a middleware enabling applications (like emulators) the possibility to play online and adds little overhead and problems to the developer using it.

In the future, Kaillera might develop more into a community of users. But first, I'll concentrate on making the Kaillera client/server architecture to work better." - Taken from the official FAQ

Tons of info can be found @ http://www.kaillera.com/forums/ and people with a lot more emu and Kaillera experience than me, will gladly help :)

BTW got a loan in the bank today, so a much better gfx-card doesn't look so unatainable anymore :1offwall: :D

It's supposedly a pretty cool piece of software. I haven't had time to mess with it though. Let us know how it works, Boggle.

Thought I would bump up this thread. After two months of Q and A, now it's time to try it out.:)

But, before we start, I'd like to acknowledge the people that have helped make this project possible:):

Ceros, The Tick, and Rodney Jason at emuxhaven

Emurage and Gemini78 at EmuUnlim

And my biggest thanks to my good ol' buddy Nico (yup, good ol' Smurf :D ) here at the xchange for introducing me to Kaillera and turning me into THE KAILLERA FREAK that I am now!!!:mwaha::thumb::D

A list of emulators that support Kaillera (emulator must support Kaillera, not the other way around) can be found at www.Kaillera.com/download.php Kaillera is built-in into the emulators, so DL a client and server is not necessary.

Based on what I've learned, here's how it works:

Cable or DSL connection (LAN as well) seem to work best w/Kaillera. 56K dialup performs POORLY w/Kaillera.

1) As for a username, choose any name you like. You'll have to enter one the first time you log into Kaillera. Hit Connect. Now Kaillera will log into several (sometimes over 100) servers. After the initial connection (doesn't matter which emulator you use, the Kaillera server is universal in setting you up with the servers) all you do in future Kaillera use is click on Options, Network Play, etc., whatever will hook into Kaillera. Your username will also be remembered.

2)After Kaillera finds all of the possible servers, click on one to enter. I try to use servers within the US, though I have connected to one in the UK. I tried connecting to one in Korea, but it was probably going to take a LONG time connecting, even with cable modem. I think the shorter the distance the faster the connection (Korea not so short for me at 7000 miles:D )

3)After you click on a server, you will enter a huge chat room. From here you can click on one of several games (usually several of the same game)waiting to be started, indicated by the word "idle" You can also go to "waiting games" tab to find the games and their respective servers waiting for someone to join.

4)If none of the games appeals to your liking, you can choose to Create a game. In JNES for example, go to Options-->Kaillera, browse the folder for the desired rom, and click OK (you'll then hook into Kaillera). When you create a game, a small box will appear on the lower left of the screen with a seperate chat. To exit out of the created game hit Cancel.

5)Unfortunately there's no way of telling what games a person has by clicking on their name. You just have to ask in the chat and find out.

6)Another aspect of using Kaillera. Routers might cause a problem w/Kaillera if they have firewalls. Might have to enter in the IP address because of the firewall. I think afterwards you can use Kaillera at anytime. However, it ispossible to work around a firewall if done correctly. Not sure about this, Nico, but I assume you're currently using your router. I'm planning on getting one myself.

I need help in trying out Kaillera in actual gameplay, as trying to find servers using JNES and PCAEWIN is like finding a needle in a haystack:p Information on using JNES and PCAEWIN can be found HERE (http://www.80sxchange.com/forums/showthread.php?&postid=203563#post203563); JNES uses v.9; PCAEWIN uses v.84. of Kaillera Client, respectively. Also, both players must have a copy of the game to play. Kaillera nor the emu author will provide any copies of roms.

Sort of along another line, I'm wanting to experiment using voice chat while playing games on Kaillera. AIM or Yahoo IM is fine. My username is 'bogglerdavid' on both messengers.

Here are the games I have for JNES: Caveman Games, Joust, and Blades of Steel. I'm planning on DL Marble Madness.

I would prefer trying it on JNES since it's easier to use:)

Any help would be appreciated:)

Before I mention the tidbits, I edited the link to the Kaillera DL site; A Boggle screw-up before (can get a little nutty messing with all of the dot.coms and slashes after the 'www' :D):goofy:

Well, here are the tidbits:

1)There is a Kaillera-compliant version of Mame32v.61 that can be found at the Kaillera DL link. It will be Mame32v.61+Kaillera Client v.9. On the Kaillera servers it will show up as Mame32K.

2)With the right games, Kaillera can support up to SIX players. Yup, 6 players. there's a page where more info can be found at
http://emulators.at/uomame32k about this and more about Mame32k.

For the MAME users, there is an interesting bit on playing 2-player alternating games (e.g. Galaga) on Mame 32K. It looks like you need to use the F5 or F6 key to switch between players.

Further details can be found at www.kaillera.com/forums/ ,then go to Kaillera Questions, then the topic "Having problems with Mame32k":)

A little update on MAME32k. The IME in the IME chat stands for "Input Method Editor" From what I've read @ Emuunlim, it allows you to use double-byte characters (ie. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, maybe others). Will keep you updated on this little tidbit:p

Looks like Winuae w/Kaillera is doing a second release, expected in September. It has some pretty neat features. The information can be found at http://kaillera.abime.net/

I think one of the features is theoretically having 16-player support:eek: Man, that would be like having Marvel Vs. Capcom thrown into a Royal Rumble tournament:cool:

Off the subject of Winuae, the IME chat in MAME32k AFAIK and learned would be like being able to write in another language, using letters, symbols, etc. not readily available on a standard keyboard.

Yet another piece of Kaillera info to pass along...:D

When playing games w/Kaillera, both parties have to use the same emulator to play the game (ie, one can't use Mame and the other Kawaks to play a game over Kaillera)

As for joining games that play 4 or more players, just click join:)
