Seems like no ones been in here posting for a while. I'm going back on my diet tomorrow. Was hard to watch my eating habits when things got really bad for me. Making a new start of it tomorrow. I figure this is a good place to come for needed support during this process. :)

I truly wish you the best of luck, Jazzy. It is so hard to lose weight and constantly feel inspired to stay on the right track.

I really can not offer you anything but my full support and maybe some interesting recipes if you run out of inspiration for light meals. :) :)

Are you going to follow any specific program?

It's important to have support... Jazzy, you can do anything you put your mind to it.... I've lost about 18 lbs since Feb. :D The toughest part is just starting... but once you get into a routine, it makes it easier. I also exercised when ever I could and if not, I tried to take walks.

I bascially cut out ALL snacking, if I do it's a piece of fruit or some veggies. I cut my carb intake a bit some but not totally. Vitamins are good too and DRINK 8 big glasses of water a day... that's key.

I wish you luck and we're here for support! :)

Thanks for the input. :) My thing is trying to switch to diet pop. Hard for me to do. lol I am drinking more water too. Going to start getting some exercise on monday. Been trying to do some walking when I can.

Thanks for idea of recipes Pippi. :) I'll keep it in mind.

I know you may not want to hear it but Pop or Soda isn't good for you. :p

I cut out soda intake to having it once or twice a month and I've noticed a big change in how I feel. I drink juice or water and it's helped me out a lot. It's just a suggestion, cause I know everyone is different. :)

Jazzmyn,
Drinking water is good because the water takes up room in your stomach so you feel fuller. You should try to drink at least a couple of liters, if not more, every day. Have a big glass about 20 minutes before a meal, and you'll eat less.
Also, one trick I have is to to not only brush my teeth after a meal, but also mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Because it is kind of sweet, it triggers some response in your brain which suppresses your appetite a little and you're less likely to need a snack. Plus, food tastes crappy after you've brushed, right!?
Walking is great- I had gotten up to 155 lbs. and lost 35 lbs in about seven months just from walking to and from my train- about 20 minutes each way. Don't get discouraged, it's frustrating not to see the results right away, but for me it took almost two months before I even lost anything, and then I was on a roll and it was easier. Good luck!!

I know you're right Taz. Just can't give up my pop cold turkey though!!! lol I am cutting back on the amount I drink though.

I agree. Pop is also bad for our teeth. It causes MANY cavities, depending on how often a person drinks it. It also causes demineralization, which is the first step towards developing a cavity. Demineralization will show up as white marks along the gumline and as it progresses the white marks turn brown and eventually become a cavity. I see A LOT of this and it's not pretty. These marks permanently disfigure the teeth and there is no way of getting rid of these marks unless it progresses into a cavity and the dentist replaces the damaged area with a filling. Bleaching or using any other cosmetic procedure will not remove these unsightly marks. Diet (sugarless) pop is bad also because all pop contains ACID which literally erodes the enamel on our teeth. Even too much juice will cause the same problems because it contains acid as well. It's best to eat fruit and cut back on fruit juices. Everybody is different (some people have stronger teeth than others), but generally people who frequently drink pop and/or juice throughout the day will have sensitive teeth as well.

Believe me, soda puts A LOT of money in the dentist's pocket!!!

I would just like to thank you for using your post as an opportunity to lecture of all of the frequent pop/juice drinkers out there. :thumb: :)

I wish you all the best in your goals. Losing weight is a very difficult thing to do. The proof is the millions of dollars spent by consumers buying weight-loss products however our society still struggles with this issue. First of all don't set yourself up to reach an unrealistic goal. Don't compare yourself to the models/celebrities you see in magazines or television. I know it's hard to do but just remember you can't compete with a picture that has been 'airbrushed' or 'retouched' by a computer to make the person look like something they are not.

I'm certainly not an expert but I can share my tips with you. I find drinking lots of water helps (8 cups a day). For dinner I eat meat (a small-medium sized portion, I find meat to be very satisying and gives me that 'full' feeling) and a variety of vegetables, usually two of them and then I'll also have a small potato. When I eat lots of starches such as pasta and bread I put on weight. Cutting back on bread and pasta and eating a meat and vegetables (with a small potato) meal instead causes my bodyfat percentage to drop. Of course staying away from high fat foods and sweets help also. I also eat a lot of fruit. It's important to get calcium so I also eat low-fat yogurt and I make yogurt shakes as well. Yogurt shakes are filling and it's the perfect breakfast for someone on the go. I also like to eat whole grain (high in fiber) cereals but I find the yogurt shakes keep me feeling full longer then eating cereal. I drink milk as well but I only drink skim milk. It took me awhile to get used to it.

I tried meal replacements, protein drinks, etc. from GNC but I find it tastes horrible and it's expensive. I prefer to eat real food, it tastes better!!

Diet is important but so is exercise. Exercise is good for many reasons. It's a great way to relieve stress and it will help you sleep better. I know you have been thorough a lot lately because I have read your posts. I don't have any magical words to help you, I wish I did. I hope you are getting lots of support from your friends and family to help you through this difficult time in your life. Take care:)

I couldn't find the previous post where I told you all that I was beginning exercising. I have been completely faithful, but I've been walking and biking enough that when I last weighed myself, I was at 199. That's the first time in about 5 years I've been under 200 lbs. With more discipline, I'm sure I can lose an additional 15-20 lbs to reach my goals. Wish me luck.

Jazzmyn, I hope you're doing well in reaching your goals as well. Give us an update if you feel like it.

Good luck Greenway and Jazzy! That's great that you're doing this. My husband and I both gained 30 lbs after we married. They always say that happens too! Anyway, we took it off over a year period and have kept it off for 3 years now. The main things I did was cut out soft drinks like everyone else here says. I don't eat fast food for lunch. That was a bad one for me. Drink lots of water, again like everyone has said. I exercised a lot in school and then quit. I had to ease myself back into it but be very faithful. At night I made myself do situps or weight resistance exercises. I had to build it up from there. Now I really enjoy it. I listen to great music and do whatever exercising I feel like doing. Dancing all around like I did in high school really works up a good sweat. It's pretty funny too. :p :D I had to force myself not to sit around either. Everytime I would plop myself in front of the TV I would either get up and do something else laundry, dishes, vaccum, file my nails, brush my dogs, organize photos...anything to keep busy. It really worked. I wasn't hungry I just ate anyway. My husband lost the weight instantly! It took me the full year. Anyway, lots of luck to both of you. I'll be checking in on the progress frequently.:)

Good luck guys!! I have lost about 20lbs in the past year. Its taken a loong time. It seemed after the first 10, it was almost impossible to keep losing........

*NO fast-food! At all. (God I would kill for a cheeseburger though!)
*My last meal is at least 6 hours before I go to bed. Those late night belly bombers and snacks catch up to you.
*Fill up on water, all day. If you have a snack, chase it with lots of water....

Now thats something I've never thought of...cool! ;)

Now I think I'm in maintenance mode, trying not to revert to my "old self"...

GOOD LUCK!!!!!! It's a great thing! :)

Yeah, I know about the weight loss thing too. I have been there. I took off 65 pounds. What Det. Ricardo said is true. Cut out all the Fast Food joints (and I love them cheeseburgers too) and drink plenty of water. Make that your main source of liquids. Cut out the sodas even if they are diet, and eat lots of Tuna, Chicken, Fish, and foods high in Protein, low in saturated fat. It's all in the mind, and you need to keep yourself motivated. And do plenty of excercise or physical activity to inrease the metabolism.

Keep up the good work, Jazz. A co-worker and I have been walking around the building on our breaks at work. I feel it is doing a little good. I really need to start watching what I eat though. Exercise can always make you feel more energized.

ImSoooSure
6-30-02, 02:50 AM
That's great that you were able to do all that Brand. I couldn't cut fast food out all together. I really had to cut things out of my diet slowley. I would pick one or two things every 4 to 6 weeks. I started with soft drinks which was the hardest for me. Then it was fast food at lunch time. I also added something good for every bad thing I cut out. Now I eat an apple every morning instead of a big gulp full of pepsi
Good luck with your exercising Stacy. You'll definately start to feel more energetic!:)

Zel
6-30-02, 02:56 AM
Jazzy stop hopping on that scale :tsk:  Measure the inches you take off instead. If you are moving and becoming more active you are shedding fat but could be gaining muscle which is more dense than fat but overall is better for you and will give you more definition. The reason I know this... My co-worker has been on Body for Life for about a month and this is not a BS program. She eats constantly but she has to work out everyday... but she is getting cut. Go to the library and check out a few books if you are interested. I think I will try this in the fall.

I've been good for the most part lately. I substituted smoking with werthers and they aren't so nice to the lbs. So I've been walking on my lunch hour and now that it has gotten really hot I've been leaving for work an hour early and walking. I'm so excited about our Dragon Boat race coming up in two weeks. All those lake practices are helping too :)

Good luck Jazzy. I'm glad this forum is going on because I need support too :)

Sooo, how's everyone doing with keeping or getting fit?:) It is getting so hot around here it's harder and harder to go outside and workout. I have jump ropes, weights, and dance cd's and DVDs stationed throughout the house. I still go out and walk at night. I try for my 2 miles. One of the miles is uphill though and I hate doing it in the heat. Oh well, like they say...what doesn't kill you....blah blah blah!:p So, what do you guys do to keep fit in the heat? :)

Zel
7-09-02, 08:58 AM
i've been walking really early in the morning - gave up my noon hour lunch (too hot). We've been putting a lot of time the last few weeks on the dragon boat and my partner and I keep switching sides so my shoulders and arms have been getting a mega major work out.

I'm currently trying to lose bodyfat. It's easy for me to go to the gym to lift weights but to do cardio.... rocket science seems easier!

And everytime I get serious about cardio, something has to happen. Like now, I hurt my back doing ab work!

So, aside from good luck, I'll have to say 'BE CAREFUL!':goofy:

That's TOTALLY my problem sketcher! I love to lift weights but doing the cardio is tuff. A bunch of people on here helped me make a fun cd and that really helps me get moving. Anything to raise my heart rate is good. Sometimes I just dance around the house. Yeah, it's funny but it works!

Now...go get on that bike Greenway!!!!!:D

dieting is such a strange monster. i don't understand it. when i try to lose weight, i feel like i'm too obsessive about what I eat and it really bothers me when i have to "think" about food. but...then, when I don't diet, i tend to lose weight without trying. ugh. i don't get it. i think i just lose weight when i'm really stressed, anxious, involved. i just wish i could be done with the whole process. would make life easier.

Jazzmyn

I agree with you Xis. lol I'm the opposite though. I gain when stressed out.

Diet?... I know this word, it meant.... meant... (looking for a dictionnary)... oh, THAT!.
I've never had problems of over-weight... I've been always in a point between "skinny" and just "thin". I don't need to do anyhing special to lose weight, in fact it's very difficult for me to gain it. I'm very nervous and usually I can't be quiet for a minute. My sisters say I'm lucky, but I'm not so sure!

Zel
7-10-02, 06:53 PM
Guancho my husband is the same way. He lost 20 lbs when he had thorasic surgery 7 years ago and its taken him pretty much all that time to gain it back. He's your typical tall slim finlander. :)

Jazzy I'm the same as you. I come from a family of stress eaters so I've always had to stay on top of things when I was stressed (hello the past 13 years :D) but since I quit smoking its gotten really really hard.

I totally took a vacation from my diet yesterday. It was our big event with the dragon boat races and it was hot so we drank beer (lots of sugar). Then we waited and waited for pizza to be delievered (try getting a pizza place to deliver to a non-address lol) but we had to go race again so we missed out on pizza.

Our treasurer went and bought everyone "ONE" hamburger (she fired by the way ) when she was supposed to bring veggie plates, cold cuts etc... I was so impressed.

6pm my friend and I couldn't take it anymore - after being left to clean up and load up (nice team I have) we went to our favorite drinking and eating hole and ate "caeser salad, mushroom caps, chicken fingers, onion rings, fries and gravy and for desert...blueberry crumble with extra vanilla icecream (they were out of chocolate eruption) If you're going to break a diet we did it in style LOL. Boy am I paying for it today :D

Can I join you guys? :)

Last year, I was on an antidepressant (Remeron) that really packed the pounds on. Gee, thanks, Doc. I lost about half of the weight after I changed to a different drug, and now I am off the antidepressants and have been since January. (yay!)

I want to think of this more in terms of measurements than weight-- I am heavier than I look (my mother calls us "dense", heh) and I don't care what the scale says as long as I can fit into my pants again! I also want to have a baby before too long, and I have a feeling that if I don't shape up now, I'll never get there.

When I'm depressed, I really don't give a flying fig about eating well or exercising, even though I know it is better for me, and I would feel better after getting off the couch. Yoga has really helped to relax & center myself, even just the videotape variety. It doesn't do much for shaping up, but it has made me more flexible.

Does anybody have a cardio/dance workout tape or DVD that they like? I have one DVD and I hate it  Donna Richardson's 3-Day Workout. The kickboxing & circuit training parts are OK, but the dance part sucks rocks. I am not very coordinated with my feet, (when I try to kick a soccer ball, I fall down!) so I would have to start with something simple. Any suggestions would be very helpful! :)

I'm thinking about doing the Slim-Fast thing, lots of the women (& some men) at work use it. Atkins sounds like eternal torture to me. I tend to skip lunch anyway (bad girl) so Slim-Fast would actually be an improvement. I will probably start exercising first before really doing that much about my diet. No more grilled cheese at lunch, though.

Jazzy, I know, I hate exercising when it's hot :p It's 95 here today. Bleah! Maybe I'll be good & do my kickboxing tape when I get home. Maybe...

Can I recommend a website for you two to check out..

http://www.fitday.com.

It is a free website where you log what you eat, and it keeps a count of how much fat/carbs/protein/etc you consumed for the day.

As far as the Slim Fast goes? I used it and lost a lot of weight doing it, but wouldn't recommend it. It isn't for everyone. It's contains nothing but carbohydrates from sugar which unless you really work out and do a lot of cardiovascular and weight training, won't help too much.

Liquid Diets like Slim Fast, Atkins, etc...are only a temporary diet fix. It doesn't teach you to eat healthy foods, and therefore when you get off the Slim Fast or stop using it, chances you go back to bad eating habits.

Just my .02, but that website really might come in handy for some on here.

Ohhh, the regular Coke to diet switch sucked. I let myself have a regular maybe once a week now. My doctor says I shouldn't think of regular Coke as a "treat," and I make bad faces behind her back. I have mostly kicked the caffeine dependency now, but this week I've sucked down 2-3 cups of decaf coffee every morning. Combined with the water I've been drinking, I have been "away from my desk" a lot at work. We've got to start somewhere, I suppose.

Thanks, Brand! I like the Fitday website, I think I'll sign up. Free = very nice!

Does this mean I have to buy a scale? Hehe. I don't like to have them in the house, they're too depressing. But, I guess weighing myself once a week or so wouldn't hurt. Gah. I just hate to see those numbers. ;)

Have a great day everyone!

I wanna join this little group too. May I? I quit smoking a year ago and have gained 50 pounds. I weigh more now than I did when I was 9 months pregnant with either of my children. I don't look like I weigh this much, but I feel every extra pound. My friend suggested yoga, which I have an interest in, but no room to stretch out and watch a yoga video. I haven't found where there are yoga classes here, yet. I'm cutting back on my Diet Cokes. I drink so many of them a day it isn't doing me any good. Trying to drink lots more water these days. Has anyone tried a gym like maybe Curves for Women. I've seriously been considering joining.

There's a Curves for Women in a strip mall near my house. I'd thought about joining, but they have a one-year membership minimum (I think) and I didn't know when we would be moving. I'll ask around the office & see if anyone else has tried it.

I like the idea of an all-female health club. There is a health club in the building where I work, but it is also a hotel gym, so everyone there is a banker (male) or a fitness nut. (female) My friend worked out there for a while, but she got fed up with working out with the bankers. No offense to any bankers in the audience! ;)

The fitness nuts are very nice, but always look too good to be working out. Apparently, everybody up there wears coordinated designer fitness ensembles. No Wal-Mart sports bra & nasty old bike shorts like I wear. Heh. Neither could I afford the health club upstairs, if I still wanted to eat. (Riiight!)

Well, I'm rambling. I was going to go to the mall after work but instead I am going to be good & work out. (maybe)

Thanks Mary. :) I spent this evening watching television and doing some stretching exercises with my legs. I'm going to do that for a few days and get myself ready to really start walking. I'm going to get back into my size 8 clothes if it kills me!!! Grrr!

I'd thought of joining a gym, but can't afford it right now. Need a job for that. lol I did buy a new exercise tape today. Going to test it out tomorrow. I'll let you know if it's any good.

Mary
8-16-02, 08:55 AM
Yup, I can't afford health clubs either. I think I'd have trouble going somewhere to work out anyway. (I can't even return a tape to Blockbuster on time!)

The Kathy Smith Kickboxing dvd was fun, but I got winded about 20 minutes into it. Eventually I'll be able to do the whole thing, I hope! :) I was glad that they actually took the time to teach you the moves beforehand.

The Fitday website is really opening my eyes  I couldn't believe they even had a pre-set for "Milky way miniature bar."

I've just started to lose weight again after putting on 14 pounds while recovering from having my brain pressure tested.
The past 2 1/2 weeks i've lost 4.4 pounds. Mind you I haven't changed what I eat.....Only increased my exercise!

All these years I thought it was the food I was eating that put the weight on me....no! It's the lack of exercise or if I just stop for a while because of sickness. Mind you I don't eat that much naughty food. Plus my mother has been able to go walking with me for the first time in years. She has had very bad back problems which we now have found out what the cause is and she has been able to be quite active again...Yeah!! Nothing worse than having to exercise on your own...

That's great, Shei!

We went to a party last night... all my goodness of the past week, poof! out the window for the night. I did only have one glass of champagne, though, which is good. (so many calories hiding in alcohol) And dancing is exercise, right? ;)

This has inspired me to work out a little (maybe a little) before I shower & hit the mall for the remainder of the day.

Happy weekend everyone!

You have to treat yourself on occassion Mary!!! LOL Otherwise you really go overboard when it happens.

Mary
8-17-02, 07:40 PM
I agree, Jazzy. Hehe, yeah, I did not mention the Very Large Piece (2 pieces) of birthday cake!

I'm not into depriving myself, that would depress me too much. ;) Just maybe when I have a cookie, I can have five, instead of ten. Or twenty. Moderation... yeah.

How are we all doing? :)

jen*
8-20-02, 02:47 PM
Jeez, now that I'm really trying to watch my weight, it seems like those pounds just won't budge. I weighed myself this morning and I had gained another 2 lbs. :(

To be fair, I don't really know what I'm doing with this semi-diet thing. I never ever ever had a problem with my weight until I quit smoking.

8-21-02, 10:27 AM
I know a few people who put on weight after they stop smoking Jen!

I'm just about to start getting into the juicing again. You guys should look into it. Ok, some of the juices may look and taste yuk but are really good for you. Apparentley if you do a liver cleansing diet it will help you lose weight as the liver is associated with weight gain or loss.

Try looking at this site: http://www.sandracabot.com/....she has some really good advice and stuff. We already have one of her books and are about to get another.

I am really getting a lot out of the Fitday website that Brand1974 suggested last week... it's showing me where the unnecessary calories are lurking. :uhoh: Thanks again for posting it!

I was too beat to work out yesterday-- my feet were too sore from walking up the hill at lunchtime in heels. (dummy me!) This is about the time that I usually flake out on my workout program, about a week into it, so I just have to keep reminding myself that it's not high school gym class & not complete torture ;)

Hope you're all having a good day!

jen*
8-21-02, 02:44 PM
Shei, deja vu!! I was just talking to my friend in Cali about getting into juicing. She says carrot/apple is her favorite and it's really good for you too. She told me if I would get a juicer, she'll walk me through the process of making juices that are not only good for you, but taste good too.

I'll have to wait for the next paycheck to get a juicer, but when I do, I'll be happy to share some of her recipes. :)

Jazzmyn
8-22-02, 02:06 AM
thanks for the idea Shei. I might have to look into it. You better share the recepies Jen!! lol

I've got a touch of the flu or something right now. Only good thing is that I'm not eating much. lol One way to lose some weight. ;)

Some of the juice recipes can actually help you lose weight. Juices are a quicker way to get all the vitamins and minerals and stuff into the bloodstream with out it being digested slowly..... There are juices for just about everything, even the flu and cold Jazz! :)

Another few things to invest in is dandelion and LSA--> Linseed Sunflower & Almond seeds.

Here's one recipe for Weight loss:

1 large grapefruit - pink if available
2 dandelion leaves
1 medium apple
1/2 cup chopped parsley
1 medium carrot
1 medium cucumber - lebanese if available
1/4 tsp of tumeric
1/2 tsp kelp powder

you can dilute this 1 part juice to 1 part water or you can add it to a cold lemon honey tea.

Grapefruit is traditionally known for it's weight reducing properties.
Dandelion, cucumber and parsley have natural diuretic properties.
Tumeric is an effective liver tonic.
Kelp stimulates the function of the thyroid gland.

You can also try either of these combos:
carrot & spinach
carrot & lettuce
cabbage & tomato
pineapple & grapefruit

Shei, sometimes your body will react to a change in diet and exercise by storing up fat cells. Don't give up, the weight will eventually start to come off when your body realizes you aren't going to starve it to death. :D

Okay everyone, I am trying the hardest I ever have to finally lose this weight this time. I have more motivation this time for two reasons: 1. I have a workout room here in the apartment complex with a treadmill, weights, etc. & 2. my boyfriend is helping coaching me along and we are both pushing each other. :) We have been working out in the gym four days a week for 30 min. at a time and I go walking at my breaks at work and after I get home from work.

I really hope this time I will see results! Wish me luck! I will keep you all updated on my progress.

Mind if I join in? I've been fighting to lose weight since I injured my back in a workplace accident in 1994. I never was a waif to begin with, but after I blew the discs out of my lower back, the situation's gotten out of control.

In the time between then and now, I got married, and still kept packing on weight. Now, I'm in the middle of a divorce, and with the money problems associated with it, I'm not eating like I should.

When I'm stressed out, I can't eat. My body's gone into starvation mode, and is hanging on to everything I eat, putting it in places I don't want it, hehe.

I've managed to lose 30 pounds over the last year by joining a weight loss organization called TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly). I have a weekly weigh-in and stuff, so that helps motivate me to try to weigh the same, or less, then I did last week.

I'm also trying to quit smoking. That's a guaranteed weight-ballooner. I was working out to Billy Blanks last summer, and I really started to tone up, but my exercise partner bowed out on me, and without her to kick my ass, I quit working out.

Losing weight is a tough row to hoe on your own. I come from a family where weight problems seem to be in the genepool. My mom is helping me, and is in TOPS with me, so, things are bound to start looking up. I hope.

I wish all of you who are fighting the same battle as I am all the best of luck. It's not easy, and not fun, but the results will be worth it in the end.

I've found something that is working for me, the soup diet, I've lost a stone in a week (not sure what that converts to) without even exercising. It was originally devised for heart patients that needed to lose weight before an operation but obviously weren’t up to anything physical. The course only lasts for a week, but you can have a week off (not over indulging) then go back on it. The week is hard, but what’s seven days? Then you can have a fairly normal week so you are not consistently denying yourself treats for a very long period which makes most people give up.

The diet consists of making a soup that you can have unlimited amounts of and differnt foods on different days including fruit, veg and meat. I've never been able to stick to a diet in my life but this works for me because I know I only have to do it for a week at a time and don't feel like I am starving myself.

I've tried it Danny, thanks for that bit of advice! This time I want to undergo a total eat change. I want to do it slowly and permanently. I find if I do that diet (and it works guys, believe me) I start binging the week after and I'm back to square one!

This time I'm taking it easy and looking to lose 1 - 2 pounds a week in the hope of getting my body used to permanently eating fruit and veg

I think the best way to lose weight is different for each indiviual, but it's good reading the different post because there are a lot of different ways that people can try which hopefully mean they will find the one for them. Even with this soup diet, I've started to tinker with it a bit to suite my lifestyle.

The other idea I had was find clubs that play 80's music and dance the night away, should burn off a few pounds, but might defeat the object havin' a few drinks, but for you lovely people I'm prepared to try it out :O)

I really wish people would wise up. There is only one sure-fire way to lose weight and keep it off. Eat correctly and exercise. End of story, bottom line. Diets will make you lose weight, but as soon as you go off them you will gain it back. You can't diet forever, it is unhealthy and robs you of elements your body needs.

Like I said....you have to eat right, and you have to move. Weight loss comes from burning more calories than you take in, no ifs ands or buts about it. You don't exercise, than any weight you lose will bite you in the ass....no pun intended.

Jazzmyn
10-07-02, 01:27 AM

I'm really going to get on the ball this time. I'm heading over to Curves for Women this morning to check it out. If it's too expensive, I'm going to drag out my yoga DVD and workout regularly. And....I'm going to start walking.

EDIT: We joined a health club today. :D It's not Curves, but one that my husband and kids can use as well. They have aerobics classes, and a really nice pool, jacuzzi, sauna, and steam room. We're going at 5:00 tomorrow morning to do our first workout.

Well said Pagan!
But in some cases, it ain't always gonna work! :) In women, hormones can also play a part. Which makes it even harder to lose. In some cases, the liver is one of the problems one may not be losing weight. I should know.....
I'm not putting anything on, but I'm not losing anything either. I'm trying though! I've even noticed that at certain times I feel nauseated when I think of fatty foods. No idea how I managed to get my stomach to do that but, I ain't arguing!! :D

10-16-02, 10:22 AM
Mind if I join y'all? I started working out and watching what I eat (I don't like the word diet...too depressing) since last May and have lost a significant amount of weight. 40 pounds so far! I hate telling people how much I've lost cuz then I can see them looking at me trying to do the math in their heads to figure out how much I must've weighed to begin with...lol

I was doing really great for a long time...walked/ran on the treadmill or used my bike every morning...then used my weight bench for about a half hour later in the day...then went for about an hour walk every evening with the kids...UNTIL...one morning, about a month ago, I woke up and had such a bad pain in my lower back that I could barely get out of bed. Went to the Dr to find out that I pulled a bunch of muscles in my lower back. The culprit: Using the leg extension on my weight bench. My Dr said he doesn't recommend that for anyone unless they're young and in good shape. (I looked at him and said "Ummm...so what are you trying to say???" lol) Anyways, he's banned me from using the leg extension from now on and wanted to me get an exercise ball if I want to work on my legs more than just using the bike and treadmill. I got one and I love it!!!

I've just now gotten to the point where I can start getting back into my workout routine again, but I feel like I'm starting over from the beginning. I still get pains down my legs, but the Dr said that's because the muscles were so strained that they were putting pressure on the sciatic nerve...just gotta keep doing the back exercises and make my back strong again...ugh

My husband just got me an elliptical trainer for my b-day...it kicks my butt, but I love it! It's low impact so it's easy on the back too.

I also drink tons of water...and VITAMINS!!! That part I cannot stress enough...I can feel the difference on days when I've forgotten to take mine. Vitamin B Complex...it's awesome!

ok...now that I've written a novel I've gotta go rake some leaves...UGH

Y'all have a great day!! :)

Good for you Jazzy! I hear yoga can work great. I lost a lot of weight over about a 2 year period. I decided to cut something bad out of my diet and add something good every 3 weeks. I cut out soft drinks first. Then came fast food and I just kept picking things I knew were bad for me. I had to give each new thing about 3 weeks to get the hang of it. I added eating an apple every morning for breakfast, snaking on fruit... Now I can't imagine eating all the junk I used to eat. It took a while though. Exercising definately helped too. I started with weight lifting and now I walk the hills around our house 5 days a week. I have to exercise with things around the house though or I'll never take the time to be consistant. Just put your mind to it, be determined and dont let anything discourage you. Even if you miss exercising for a day or so...do just a little. Anything just to keep the routine going. Good luck! :D

Well, I have been trying to get in shape myself but recently I have slipped up. It is hardest when I get home from work or on the weekends. My plan was and still is to eat a big breakfast and a smaller lunch then to not eat anything after 3pm. Works great when I can stick to it. :p

In the summer I was able to do a half hour bike ride. I fought it most mornings but I did feel better when I got into it. Now tho, I don't :( There is a gym close by that I want to try but kinda feel silly going by myself. Maybe I wil try it out in the late evenings?

My problem is I am on my feet all day at work and am usually too tired to ..ok that's a lame excuse! LOL I am too lazy that's all. :D

As for eating, I try to stay away from pizza and any cheese products. Been making a yummy red bean and rice dish. It is filling and loads of fiber. I do cheat on Sundays. Th's the day I picked to eat whatever I want. Funny thing is, lately, Sundays have been more then one day a week.

Anyways, I am trying to keep moving around a lot at work. Making it a point to not take too many breaks. When I get home I try to kep my apt. cleaned up and that helps keep me somewhat active.

I think I have lost a few pounds but they easily came back.

A few of my friends are on Jenny Craig. My friend Sgt. L. Lost 60 pounds on it. :) Since i've been stuck behind a desk for the past few months my weight has slowly crept up on me. I've tried many crash diets in my lifetime. i've even tried those weight loss supplements (xenedrine, Stacker 2) all i have to say about those is PLEASE DON'T!!! Yes, I lost the weight wicked fast but my heart felt like it was gonna jump out of my chest! Not worth the consequences. Now I go to the gym twice a day and I take a Hatha Yoga class which I love!

Since the holidays were unkind to me (I went from 158 lbs to 179) I needed something drastic to get back to where I was for the gig a couple of weeks ago. I found something that really works and did not get me all riled up and jittery.

It's called Trimspa. You can get it online at www.trimspa.com , and they ask you specific questions before recommending which version to take. I had told them that I had tried stuff like Stacker 2 before, and it made me very wired, so they prescribed a formula that is VERY low in those kind of supplements.

Now be warned, it DOES contain ephedra, but in so small an amount that it won't do any damage. Most of the horror stories you hear are about atheletes who take MEGA doses of the stuff and then go work out like an animal in the heat. This has only 15mg per dose. Not much.

Anyway it didn't make me wired or jittery, I slept like a baby at night, and my pulse never raced, even when doing full cardio. It stayed the same as it normally did when working out. However, it stopped my appetite COLD. I only ate because I knew I had to. I was able to keep my calorie intake to 1,700 a day while still working out as normal, and I lost 20 pounds in a month and a half. I've since stopped taking it, and my appetite has not returned because my stomach has shrunk from not making a slob of myself.

Also, weight training is VERY important to losing fat. The more lean muscle you have, the faster fat burns. You can do cardio until the cows come home, but if you don't add weight training your results will be slower in coming. Lean muscle continues to burn fat even AFTER you are done working out.

There's a workout tape that's out now called "The Firm" that incorporates weights into cardio workouts. My wife does this religiously, and those of you who've seen pix of my wife know that it works. (Lucky me! ) You can purchase the tapes here: The Firm (http://www.youcansave.com/firm.html). Trust me, they work. I get winded just watching her do them!

Jazz, you're doing so well, I just know you'll stick to it! :) {{hugs}} How's the Jenny Craig food taste, really?

I need to get back on track myself! I did so well from June to November last year, I walked twice a day and rode my bike. I lost 12 pounds without altering my diet too much. Bad news is, I got sidetracked this winter (since my lung troubles, catching the flu, pneumonia, or a cold is a terrifying prospect to me.)

My son is starting to show some extra pounds lately, too, and we've decided he's going to walk or ride bike with me at least once a day as soon as the weather breaks....meanwhile, we're starting to cut back on the fattening foods and junk, replacing them with low fat.

TC, I read in a Reader's Digest that people who had at least four servings of dairy a day, combined with some exercise and a slight reduction in calories, lost more weight on average than those who avoided dairy. The trick? Instead of whole milk, use 2%, 1%, or skim. Don't buy fat free cheeses, but opt for low fat cheeses. I bought some reduced fat cheese slices, and you can't even tell the difference. :)

Anywayz....I was wondering if anyone knew of a good low impact exercise tape for beginners? If I can get a couple different ones, I can get my kid and myself started on the exercises before the weather even breaks.....

Also, one trick I have is to to not only brush my teeth after a meal, but also mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Because it is kind of sweet, it triggers some response in your brain which suppresses your appetite a little and you're less likely to need a snack.

Brushing my teeth make's me less hungry to. My tooth paste aint sweet it's a tooth paste that aint brand name. Usually it make's me less hungry becuase of the taste in my mouth.

Latley I have been really lazy and havent eaten regualry becuase I am to lazy to make myself something. When I do thought its a meal that will last a long time.

I stopped drinking Soda and I lost a lot of weight. I started drinking it again and got some weight back. I try to drink Deit when ever I can.

15 pounds! That's fantastic, Jazzmyn! :thumb: I haven't noticed much for weight loss, but my wardrobe is definitely showing something's happening. I can pull my duty belt in a couple of notches now, and a few other pairs of my civvie pants really need belts now, too. :D

A big congrats to you but...I thought you were going to toss some of it my way :)

Seriously though..I'm really happy for you. I'm sure that it's just as frustrating to try to lose as it is for me to try to gain. WTG once again :)

I've probably gained 30 pounds in the last year, I constantly fight my weight and jump up and down like Oprah. It's probably time to start running again and laying off on the pizza and beer

I finally broke down and bought a treadmill. Now I walk about 2 miles per day and have really been working on getting my carb intake down. I hope to lose quite a few pounds before going to Reno next month.

Just watch that you don't gain it all back there!!!!!!! LOL Personally, I'd recommend Vegas over Reno. I found Reno to be pretty boring place. Eaither way... have a great time out there!!! :D

I really want to start my walking again. I still exercise but I haven't been able to do my 3 miles a day lately. I love walking up in the foothills where I live. The hill climbing is great exercise. It's great for the mind too. I grab my walkman, fav. cd's and go! :D

I thought I would revive this thread because I am also trying to shed a few lbs. 20 to be exact. I have had such a hard time and I thought maybe if I read this thread, I could get a few more ideas. I love the suggestion about brushing your teeth! What an awesome idea! As far as water goes, I drink around 100oz a day which I don't have too much of a problem doing. My biggest problem is exercising. My husband is an athlete and we have a full on gym in our basement, but it's getting motivated that is killing me! And because I work from home, I sit ALOT! Ahhh...excuses excuses! :D

Anyway, just thought I would join in on the weight-loss thread and see how everyone has been doing since they last posted here. Maybe reading all this will inspire me to get off my arse and go workout ;)

That's a problem also PG, too much water can be almost as bad as not enough. You're overworking your kidneys. Eight glasses, or 64 oz, is sufficient.

For real  I had no idea that a person could consume too much water...

Neither did I....unfortunately, PKD runs in my family, and my doctor told me about the bad side of drinking too much. :(
