Prefab Sprouter 5-28-02, 09:25 AM I cant understand why you call your Baseball Championships the World Series when only teams from the States can enter.
Bit strange isnt it?:p
At least in Soccer the World Cup truly is global
I have one!
What on Earth is "American English"? ;)
Prefab Sprouter 5-28-02, 10:00 AM It's the same with American Football. Only teams from the STates can compete. Are they scared of losing to another country?? ;)
space-invader 5-28-02, 11:03 AM don't forget canada! they have 2 teams (at the moment)
a friend of mine said it is called the world series because it used to be sponsored by this company called "world" or something like that???? i haven't attemped to verify this...
80sSmurf 5-28-02, 11:23 AM OUCH brain hurts from incoming jokes overload .... ;) :D
Actually I always wondered about the term American Football, I mean there's not that much foot to ball contact .... Baseball & basketball, those make sense, but the football part I just don't get ?? Anyone know why it was named football ???
Prefab Sprouter 5-28-02, 11:36 AM Well they plagiarised that from the beautiful game ;). If they think we're going to call our sport "soccer" they've got another thing coming!
Caligula 5-28-02, 11:57 AM oooohhhh what could compare to the fast paced high scoring game of soccer :D . You've got 40 or 50 guys chasing a ball around and some huge net, that anyone should be able to score a goal in and all the games end up 1-0 ... Give me hockey, baseball or "American football" anyday, now thats where the skilled athelete's are :D
( I am joking around please don't make this one of my warning about starting fights )
even though i'm serious that I find soccer boring:) but to each his own
80sSmurf 5-28-02, 12:14 PM You're soooooooooooo reported Cal ;)
Naah don't sweat it, this is all in good fun :D
Not surprising you find football boring, after all you didn't grow up on it, you're perfectly entitled to your opponion :)
BTW have you ever tried to rally up a group of friends for a 5-a-side match in the park ???? Best way to spend an afternoon :p
Caligula 5-28-02, 12:22 PM yeah as kids we played it all the time on the school grounds, and a couple rocks for nets, yeah it was fun, but could never figure out why you kick the ball with the side of you foot, you get so much better velocity with your toe..... and we weren't really sticklers to the rules, you could block the ball with your hands if it was drilled at your head, and no one really played proper positions we just chased and kicked the ball...... it's fun to play but just doesn't look exciting to watch. Since it is the most watched sport in the world my opinons may be wrong

Your opinion is wrong, Caligula. I am more worried about your opponion.
I understand hockey and basketball and I can see why people like both sports. I don't want to hear a word about football being boring. Not after watching the game of Baseball. That has to be the most boring sport in the world.
Football is the only sport I care to follow, so it has to be good. Right boys? ;) :D
I also refuse to call it Soccer. You Americans could have named your sport Throwball or Catchball or Knuckleheadball. :) ;)

If you know how to do it right, you can easily make a real screamer with the side of your foot .... and you can't make a nice curled & precise shot or pass with the toe. You just get velocity that way, no control .... Of coz, if the ball is almost outta reach and you spot a defender or GK coming at you, the toe is perfect for a quick launch at goal :D
And for Miss Pippi, dou'nt corect my gammar, is prefect ass it is ;)
Hey! There's nothing wrong with socc.....zzzzzzzzzzzzz.....
Prefab, when there's an American hurling team, we'll let the Irish have a football team...deal?
The reason why Major League Baseball consists of only American and Canadian teams is simple. Money. Baseball has a 162 game schedule. Flying the teams all over the world would not be feasible for such a long season.
As for football, I'm thinking it's more of a size thing. Can you imagine if the St. Louis Rams played a football team from China? Can you say crushed? Football players, especially the lineman, are leviathans. 6 foot 4 and 350 pounds are about the norm. Hell, linebackers are 275 pounds now, and can run a 40 yard dash in 4.5 seconds. These are some scary specimans! For Goddess' sake, the quarterbacks are now 6'2"-6'3" and 230 pounds. No one's small anymore but the kickers, and even they are starting to get big!

Knuckleheadball? Hey, at least they have the sense to wear padding before they beat the crap out of each other! Now rugby should be called "Knuckleheadball".

I have a question. Where do the football teams find these guys? Most men in this country are shorter than 6 feet and I am getting a sore neck from looking down at these people. I want to know where they grow these players, because I want to go there. :) ;)
Caligula 5-28-02, 04:53 PM Howcome in real football (NFL) a quarter back can get blindsided by a 6'3 255 pound linebacker with almost worldclass speed, and either lie on a the ground nice and quiet but hurt, or either regain he composure and continue to play shaken up. In soccer (the game where the ball ruins a good jog) someone gets the feet taken out from them , and it's like they've been shot, they're rolling around screaming , not very manly in my books:D
80sSmurf 5-28-02, 05:04 PM Nope, but you might get a penalty or a free kick that way :D
OK agreed, there's definitely too much acting in footbal, but many of the kicks can actually hurt you really bad. Yes you have to wear shin protectors (or whatever they're called in english), but you're ancles are still vulnerable and football boots/shgoes are pretty hard. Getting a good kick where you support you weight would even make the biggest QB go down :)
 I just love how a thread can change topic several times :p

Hey now! I'm only 5'7"! Good things come in short packages, ya know! :D
djdaffy1227 5-28-02, 06:49 PM I'm more offended at being called yank
Soccer is ok to watch but I prefer Football or Basketball. Baseball bores the tears outta me. I went to see a Pittsburgh Pirates game once and it was awful because I couldn't change the channel

Wow, Pagan. The rumour mill here had you down at 5'6". I need to fire my stat researcher, Roemy. I am glad to hear that you're 5'7". We all know how much that extra inch does. :) :D
162 baseball games in a season? All those games and all it took for me was two innings and then I was bored. My boyfriend likes to follow the stats of the players. I like to follow the moves of the beer man. He was really cute. :) :)
Sheesh! 17 replies to this thread already! Here's me thinking that people have gotten really offended here!
But still nobody has answered my question yet. What the hell is American English?
OK, off topic, so I'll shut up. ;)
djdaffy1227 5-28-02, 09:12 PM Recker, American English isn't as stuffy as the queen's English  J/K
American English/Queen's English
French fries/Chips
Elevator/Lift
Line/Cue
Cigarette/***
Soccer/Football
it's just a different dialect spoken in America as opposed to other English speaking countries
 I just noticed I can't use the Queen's English term for cigarette.
Cartoon_Chris 5-28-02, 10:49 PM Almost all sports are boring now (baseball should do something about lollygagging batters going for 2-minute strolls between pitches, and the NHL needs to wise up and nullify that stupid trap defense). I say: play them on the computer! They're much more fast and exciting, at least I think so! As a realism and stats nut, "Diamond Mind Baseball" is my poison of choice.

I have read somewhere that American Football belongs to the 10 most dangerous sports activities, counting the numbers of injuries and deaths . On the other hand, Rugby ranks way below on that index, even under football (or Soccer for the Americans ;)).
Rugby players know how to move their bodies instead of crashing them together like buffaloes in heat...and beating the crap out of each other is strictly after-game.

Rugby players are a tougher breed! ;) And like Wavemaster said, they know how to move! But sometimes the fights do take place during the game!
Hey DJ! You haven't heard Kiwi English ;)
Okay, here is the breakdown for all of you overseas people.
Why is baseball great? Because it is a game where every thing starts with one person, who has to make a strategic decision, and then execute on what he has decided.
The nuances of baseball are so intricate and well thought out that it takes a smarter fan to appreciate it. Pitchers can vary the speed of a pitch, throw to different sides of the plate, se curves, sliders, or various other pitches to try to fool the batter. The batter has to make a decision in teh first .5seconds of a pitch if he is going to swing or not.
I wont even get into the hit and run, sacrifice bunts/fly, pitchouts, stealing bases, pitching switches, double switches, pinch hitters or any of the various other things that make baseball the thinking mans game.
As for football, it is the one sport where everybody is involved in every play. Everybody has an assignment, if they fail, the team fails.
Hockey is quite simply the hardest sport to play, physically, and requires the most skill.
Now, FOOTBALL as you others call it. Not a tough sport, does not take a LOT of brains to be good at it, and for crying out loud, if the FRENCH can win the world title, SOMETHING IS WRONG! Ever watch the German team play? If a player gets within 5 inches of on of them, they fall down, and grab an ankle of leg, like Hulk HOgan just kicked thier ass. While directing a ball with your foot is nice and all, my 10 year old daughter has pretty much mastered it, so it cant be that hard to do. Havent seen too many 10 year olds able to throw a nice spiral with a football, or a cut fastball, or redirect a slapshot traveling at about 95 Mile per hour.

I think someone is taking this discussion a little too seriously.
Baseball is not only the thinking man's game. It is also the snoring woman's game. ;) :D
Prefab Sprouter 5-29-02, 05:01 AM Am I causing Dissent in the ranks with my discussion??????;)
Pagan,
When other countries actually admit they've heard of Hurling (never mind play it!) we'll let them play :D Mind You our championship is called the All-Ireland Championship not the World Hurling Championship (Must be our inferiority complex kicking in!!! ;)
Now before anyone strangles anyone else this is supposedly a tongue in cheek look at how people from different sides of the world view sport in other countries. As Pagan and Trixter will testify (and have slagged me over) I am a Gridiron fan. Silver and Black all the way!!!!!!!!
Oh yeah and I use the term "Yank" not in an insulting tone! For those who are interested watch "The Quiet Man"!!!!! Should anyone wish to refer to me as a "Paddy", a "Mick" or any other oirish term I shall take it in the spirit of this thread :D
So please dont take this too seriously guys!
Hey Jasper,
Nothing wrong with the French being world champs! And as for the Germans, they've definitely gone downhill. Those guys used to be like Teutonic Knights on the pitch!!!! Tough and Skilful!

granted, there are many nuances to the game, however, cricket has even more! test matches are the ultimate in strategy (though it can take 5 days to finish a match, but i don't mind in the slightest :) )

very true! rugby players have a bit more sense of well-being than the gridiron players do....some of them gridiron players are nuts!
two reasons why football (soccer) is so good
1. it's simple
all you need is a ball, and you can play it anywhere! no wonder it's so popular around the world...it's a sport that the most poor people can play
2. the structure of tournaments
each team plays each other twice (home and away). the top team on the ladder wins the championship.
no playing 162 games etc in a season, be miles in front at the end of that, only to be knocked out of the first round of playoffs by some lowly team that just squeezed into the playoffs.
NFL football probably could not do this though (the players couldn't possibly handle much more games than what they play at the moment)
i love watching ice hockey, but the problem is that the regular season is pretty meaningless.
now, i have yet to mention ANOTHER football code...AUSSIE RULES!!!! anyone seen that game?
Prefab Sprouter 5-29-02, 06:27 AM Hey Space Invader,

If you're daughter is so great you should sign her to an italian team right away, there's big money to get even for female footballers ;)
Appreciated your in depth look on baseball, here's mine on football :p
Maybe football doesn't take a lot of brains compared to baseball (it still relys heavily on tactics and the team following those), but being able to kick a ball hard isn't gonna cut it anywhere .... You need to be able to spot the holes before they appear, running at top speed (50m dash in 6-7 secs) while keeping the ball in perfect control, making sure the opponent doesn't get it while spoting a hole in the defence and then laying in a sugar-sweet-spot-on-perfect-pass to a team mate isn't easy at all ... :)

Couldn't have said it better myself :thumb: , definitely one of the major reasons I love Football
Prefab Sprouter 5-29-02, 10:41 AM I'm with ya Smurf. Anyone can play football, anywhere. From a beach to a street it can be played anywhere by anyone.
It unites people across the world in their love for it; who needs war? Settle it over a game of footie!
Greenway88 5-29-02, 11:25 AM *As far as the World Series goes, I imagine that the name began because at the time the only place that they played baseball was the USA. As far as now, the best players and best teams are here. It would be great to play against some Japanese teams or some other professional teams, but I don't know that there would be much competition if the World Series were opened up to teams from around the world.
It would be hard to say that the Major Leagues here are truly all American, though. I would have to guess that about half of the Major League Squads are made up of Latin American players with major contingencies of Domincan, Colombian, Cuban and Mexican players. There are also many Japanese players now making an impact.
*In the beginning, American Football had more kicking in it, including a play that is no longer used called a drop kick.
*Baseball can be very boring if you're unwilling to watch the game and learn the strategy. I'm not the biggest fan, but if I go the ballpark, I will watch the game and not the beer vendors.
*Sprouty, I think DJ may have been referring to Yanks meaning Yankee fans. In baseball, there are Yankee fans, Red Sox fans, Dodger Fans, Braves fans and everybody else. If you root for any team besides the Yankees, you don't want to be called a Yankee fan.
*In reality, the USA is the best at baseball and basketball (and we should be, we invented the games). Hockey is probably the sport that North Americans and Europeans are best matched at. As far as SOCCER goes, we'll let you Europeans and South Americans duke it out and see who's standing in the end. Enjoy the World Cup!
Prefab Sprouter 5-29-02, 11:34 AM We will Greenway. It seems from the boards that we have Danes, English, Germans and a mad Irishman. We'll all have a keen interest!

Hey Spacey. You are right! There is so much more to cricket than most people realise. It is a team game and also an individual battle between batter and bowler. Give me a 5 day test match, plenty of snacks and stuff to drink and I could watch entire tests.......! If I didn't feel so guilty about sitting in front of the TV set for long periods.
These days I generally only indulge in one day matches.
Pippi, please refrain from making derogatory statements about the most beautiful trophy in professional sports.

I will keep my mouth shut from now on.
Prefab Sprouter 5-30-02, 04:52 AM Oh I dont know. Strange men wearing blades whilst moving over Frozen water vying for a cup called Stanley is a bit crazy to me. It's a bit exclusive isnt it? I mean any country in the world can play soccer; but you wont see Jamaica or the Congo fielding Ice Hockey teams (unless there's a remake of Cool Runnings!)
space-invader 5-30-02, 06:58 AM that stanley cup is MASSIVE....
i personally like the ashes the best (australia vs england cricket test matches)....it's so puny (an urn about 3 inches high!), but it has a colorful history to it, and if trophies were auctioned, it would probably fetch more $$$ than most trophies going around

they're always tight matches and are great to watch...i went to one of the games a few years ago too! the selection policy they have here is that they choose the best players from the season past, which is not necessarily the best players suited to this form of game.
e.g., the big strong type of players have much more impact on aussie rules games than the compromised game.... the more faster agile players are more useful
i enjoy watching gaelic football too

I meant in the world. Not within the US. I think you are prooving why this topic is so funny. There is NO bigger sport than football in the world. It is the most played, followed and watched sport worldwide. :p
As much as I dislike football (soccer) I'd have to agree with you Pippi. Baseball does not have a huge following in most other countries outside of the US. Soccer is the national sport of many countries and is popular almost everywhere.
Ty :p You need to do a little more travelling! ;)

A bunch of ugly guys with hairy legs running around in shorts all day trying to put a ball the size of Sloth from "The Goonies" head into a goal the size of a two bedroom apartment?
And they can only muster one or two goals? Somehow the phrase "Couldn't hit the broad side of an aircraft carrier with a beach ball" somes to mind! ;)
Hmmmm...hockey, played on ice, with a tiny little puck. Trying to get it into a goal that's hardly bigger than the man defending it, all the while being able to be practiaclly tackled while skating and trying to control it with a stick...
And the fans don't riot and kill each other! :thumb:
Now that's what I call sport!
Prefab Sprouter 5-30-02, 12:46 PM Ah yes ,you guys complain about only having one or two goals. Guys get a concentration level!!!! You dont have to score 285,000000000 points in a quarter to make it interesting! You can appreciate how the game is played too. :D
I've played Gridiron (Offensive Guard and Tackle) before and I love to watch whats going on in the "Trenches". Soccer's not just about scoring its about the skill too!
Why do you need to score 6 (?) points for a touchdown? why not score just 1???????
Sorry guys, doesn't make sense!
At least in Football you dont have some idiot playing a stupid organ constantly during a game! If you want to listen to organ "music" by a CD dont go to a game!
And as for rioting fans; well that is unacceptable! Hold my hands up on that one Pagan! Still not all games are like that :D

Prefab Sprouter 5-30-02, 01:22 PM Admit it the only reason you dont like Soccer is because you lot are Useless at it. Hell even you're women are more successful :D

How about some facts?
Stanley Cup is over twice as tall.
Can you drink tasty beverages of your choice from the World Cup? No.
Does the World Cup look cool held sideways over your head? No.
Do you get the entire team's player names engraved on the World Cup alongside all the great players of the past? No.
Do you get a day with the World Cup to take it to parties and whatever else you want? No.
Does the World Cup travel around to special events so kids and everyday people can look at it and TOUCH it? I don't know but I bet it doesn't.
What were you laughing about again?

That can be used against you, ya know! Europeans SUCK at baseball, hence the complete lack of any teams from there! ;)
But let me settle this once and for all.....the argument between hockey and socczzzzzzzz......huh? what? Oh yea....soccer. I went to read what the wisest man on the planet had to say about both of them, and have taken his words of wisdom for you to read. It has now been determined that NEITHER hockey or socczzzzzzz....hey, okay! I'm awake now...soccer is a sport at all! Let me allow the master to tell you...so without further ado, in the words of that worldly scholar George Carlin:
"To my way of thinking, there are really only three sports: baseball, basketball, and football. Everything else is either a game or an activity.
Hockey comes to mind. People think hockey is a sport. It's not. Hockey is three activities taking place at the same time: ice skating, fooling around with a puck, and beating the shit out of somebody.
If these guys had more brains than teeth, they'd do these things one at a time. First you go ice skating, then you fool around with a puck, then you go to the bar and beat the shit out of somebody. The day would last longer, and these guys would have a lot more fun.
Soccer isn't a sport either because you can't use your arms. Anything where you can't use your arms isn't a sport. Tap dancing isn't a sport. I rest my case."
So there you have it....neither one's a sport! Gridiron football rules!

If this is true then why am I a Detroit Lions fan?
Greenway, I don't like the Pirates either
PS Pagan, George Carlin rules!!!
Prefab, We arent interested in SOCCER because nobody here really watches it unless it is World Cup, or Olympic time. ANd, if the Americans cant beat anybody, why are our women so dominating? Who is the most well known soccer players in the world? Mia Hamm, and that Brazillian guy. Funny, no Europeans in that. WHo is the most famous ever? Pele' who again, is another WESTERN HEMISPHERE player. For all the pumping up of how great the European players are, why arent they recognized outside of Europe?
And, lets be honest. The world cup is one ugly trophy. It was once STOLEN, and replaced with a replica. It looks like a something made in arts and crafts class. Hell, the Baseball World Series trophy is better looking than the World Cup.
Here is a couple of links to some more beautiful trophies around:

Caligula 5-30-02, 09:21 PM Whats all this negativity against hockey from you soccer guys?, have you guys actually ever sat down and watched a game or does it move a little too quick and have too much excitement. BTW it has become quite an international game, not only with the countries you usually think about when hockey is mentioned, but places like Scotland, Spain, Japan, Isreal and many more countries even have pro leagues (even though they are basically played by low level players from other countries) .
there's nothing better than watching international hockey on the big ice surface, fast and exciting with plenty of action.
Jasper, I read your latest response and it is obvious that you lack knowledge on Soccer. Mia Hamm might be the most popular player in the US, but that's really it.
France are current World Champions. I believe France is in Europe. It was there last time I checked.
Ask any kid, outside the US, who loves soccer who Zidane, Michael Owen or David Beckham is. I am pretty sure you will get an answer. From Brazil to China and Africa.
The Americans here have every right to love their major sports. As long as they keep in mind that the last 93% of this planet's population could not care less, with the exception of the Super Bowl. It in an interesting fact that the US population is less than 7% of the total world population, but you still look at a sport which is loved in most of the world as minor.
I am sorry if any of my jokes stepped on toes here. I think it is silly to tell people to stop making jokes about some stupid trophy, only to lash out after another stupid trophy in your next post. Maybe that is a moderators prerogative, but I have said my last word in this topic. This way I can walk away with a smile and enjoy the rest of the 80sxchange like always. :) :)
Caligula 5-30-02, 09:41 PM nothing bugging me, it's all opinions and jokes, i'm a big boy you can all say whatever you want and like whatever sport or hobby you like . :D :D
I think everyone's getting a little carried away with this. Pippi, Jasper....we're all having a little goofy fun....nothing in this thread should be taken seriously! Lighten up guys!
wavemaster 5-31-02, 01:23 AM After reading all of this (and having a good laugh, since I didn't took all the posts here in this thread too serious :D), I hide behind my TV and watch the only sport which is interesting me...F1-racing.
Yeah, the trophies are also downward ugly sometimes, and someone is surely telling me now "What the heck can be so interesting in watching adult men racing around in circles for 60something laps?", but I simply like watching it.
Besides, it's one of the few sports where a German is regulary winning...

Prefab Sprouter 5-31-02, 04:32 AM Now Ty, Following Greenway's post I did say I stand corrected!
Yep! Like Formula 1! Forza Ferrari! Forza Jordan!
I like Hockey. If I'm not mistaken the trophy abuse came from one of the Hockey Fans first ;)

...AND for having the greatest pure passer to ever play the game! :D
Okay, so the Faders won 3 bowls to the Dolphins' 2. We'll even that out this year.... :1pissed:
space-invader 5-31-02, 12:42 PM woah...this thread is outa control....
so are some football (soccer) fans
CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh, May 31 (AFP) - A young Bangladeshi football fan and a supporter of Argentina died after electrocuting himself here Friday as he tried to fix his favourite flag on his home roof, police said.
Mokhlesur Rahman, 17 and a factory worker of this port city's Sugandha district, died instantly after a bamboo pole with Argentine national flag he was trying to fix on the roof contacted a live overhead electric wire, a police spokesman said.
His death came hours before Friday's kick-off in Seoul for the first World Cup to be staged in Asia, the event being co-hosted by Japan and South Korea.
World Cup fever has caught on in this football-crazy nation.
Bangladesh's national sport is kabaddi, but football and cricket are the most popular spectator sports.
If the display of flags in Bangladesh is any indication, Argentina and Brazil are the Bangladeshis' favourites to win the World Cup.
Wow! Have I missed a discussion in here!
I still have no idea why you Americans have to call everything World Championships when it involves only you and Canada???? Even wrestling!!
I also understand that some Gridiron teams have Aussies in them. Funny how when you take an Aussie Rules footballer to play your football, he get's it quite quickly, but when you take one of your players to play Aussie Rules......he sucks!! Absolutely no idea!!
Cricket, great game! I usually only watch the one day matches myself.
I love to watch the football matches between Ireland and Australia. I'd like to see Australia win just once though...:D It's very one-sided as far as I'm concerned. What aussie rules *rules* are in play?
Tydestra 6-02-02, 02:31 AM Hmmm... you're right Shei :) Maybe its our super huge :ego: in play... and its Canada, Latin America and the states :p
Shei, I believe the only Aussie to play were Punters, and all they do is catch the ball, kick the ball. Nothing more.
Pippi, I didnt mean to sound like I was taking this so seriously. Please accept my appologies.
Thank you, Jasper. I was really worried that I had upset you. Thank you for your PM as well. It was really sweet of you. :) :*
Caligula 6-03-02, 01:26 PM I watched one of my first football games this morning, Brazil vs Turkey, I will admit I was more entertained than I thought I would be, it was okay, I think I will follow Brazil now that I watched their first game, but I still can't put it up there as my favorite sports, but it killed time and allowed me to be late for work.

At least we can play your game! :p Unlike the other way around!!! At least we come in handy for something. :)
There was a segment yesterday in Danish television about how football was percieved in the US. The hope had been that after the WC in 1994, Americans would finally begin to love this sport. Unfortunately it's still mostly percieved as a hobby rather than a true sport, and is mainly played by girls (NO smart comments here, please ;) ).
The Ancher person said afterwards, that maybe it was all for the best, that there was one sport the Americans didn't excell in :D She then made it clear that the US women were the current world champions ;)
So please, Americans, stick to your baseball and basketball ;)
nolanbuc 6-05-02, 03:10 AM Wow, I should've knon better than to go on vacation right before the World Cup. :D I've missed all the fun.
Frankly, I don't care much for watching soccer (esp. on TV). I can't really explain why, and I'm sure soccer will get along just fine without me.
Perhaps it's that I'm just not very emotionally invested in any one team, because all three of my boys play soccer and I love watching them play. Although it is not a high scoring game, it can be very nerve-racking if you are really pulling for one of the teams.:vibrator:
My lack of enthusiasm notwithstanding, good luck to everyone's teams, and have fun watching the tourney. :thumb:
