1943 Tony Mansfield, half of Naked Eyes, is born in Salford, England.

1944 Gladys Knight is born in Atlanta. Billy Vera is born in Riverside, Calif. He wrote the theme to Family Ties.

1945 John Fogerty is born.

1955 Tony McGeoch, guitarist with Public Image Ltd., is born.

1959 Visage vocalist Steve Strange is born.

1968 Eighties "Locomotion" vocalist, Kylie Minogue is born in Melbourne, Australia.

1977 Bruce Springsteen is free to enter a studio again after settling out of court with his former manager, Mike Appel. Their legal entanglements had prevented Springsteen from recording.

1983 Apple Computer's Steve Wozniak prepares to take a bath as his US Festival opens in San Bernardino, Calif. David Bowie and Van Halen asked for - and received - a cool million apiece for their headlining sets. Meanwhile, "Weird Al" Yankovic leaves his job as a mail clerk.

1996 Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan is arrested in Los Angeles on charges of drug possession after an overdose puts him in the hospital.

1998 Elton John and Bernie Taupin win an Ivor Novello Award for their re-jigged "Candle in the Wind '97." John had re-recorded the song with new lyrics following Princess Diana's death. "I wish this record had never had to be made," he says.

This was so scary. I remember it very well. I was sure he was going to die from an overdose and that would be the end of Depeche Mode. I was so relieved when he made it through his problems and they released Ultra.

This is funny, because I remember the next day some DJ on the radio was talking about this. I did not watch Dick Clark. I remember thinking, I would not have picked these 3. The little things you remember!!
