View Full Version : The 80's: Back To The Past?
Iluvthe80s 5-26-02, 11:06 PM I was watching this show on the A&E network today called "Bio:'86" that was like a yearbook of events from the year 1986. Well, watching it once again gave me a feeling of nostalgia for my favorite decade and how I wish I was there again.
Here is a question to ponder. If you could go back and relive the 80's again (starting with 1980) and stay in the 80's, would you do it? Think about it, you would have to give up some of our modern conveiniences such as cell phones, DVD players, internet, etc. You would still grow old and all and could have children, get married, etc. but the 80's would always be there. What would you do?
I think I would go back. I am not happy with the way the world has become today. Granted, there are some modern advances that are good, but I could live without them.
Shortie Blonde 5-26-02, 11:20 PM I would. I always feel 20 years too late. These clothes I wear, I like them, but I rather wear that of the 80s. And today's music, it's not mine. This culture, this decade...not mine.
I like it like it is here in 2002. I think there were many bad things in the eighties that I am glad I don't have to deal with today. I wish the music and movies were as good as back then, but that is just a natural part of getting older.
ImSoooSure 5-27-02, 01:29 AM This surprises me but I'd have to say no. I mean I would love to have the 80s around but then I wouldn't have so many great memories of it if it was always there. I'm afraid I would get sick of it or something and then I'd be posting on a 1950's web site! :p Thats really a tuff question though. So many great things about the 80s. I'd just hate to see it ruined because it's around all the time.
I really don't know. I guess if I could go back to being that age again knowing what I know now yeah, I think maybe I would. But there's no way I'd want to live through the 80s like I did before. As I've said before. I loved a lot of things about the 80s, but didn't particularly enjoy it most of the time.
Caligula 5-27-02, 05:09 AM I voted I don't know, I think this is a question I'd have to really think about (but being 1/2 retarded I answer it as soon as I see the poll). I think a big question is would you remember everything we have now.
I loved growing up in the 80's, the music, hanging with my friends, no real cares in the world, but now so much has changed with all the modern conviences, discoveries in health care, until recently a much better economy now..... I think sometimes it might just be nicer to look back and remember the good times.
Now If I could go back for one week to 1982-83, waking up in my old bed, looking around at my Black Sabbath banner, and getting ready for school while I got to see my father 20 years younger and alot healthier, hoping I had enough money to buy gas for my 72 nova so I didn't have to ride the school bus and hanging out at the school entrance before school cracking jokes with my friends as people walked by, then cutting class to hang at the arcade and trying to figure out where the party was going to be on the weekend......nice to remember :)
80sTrivia 5-27-02, 06:33 AM I voted for Yeah, In a Heartbeat!!! It would be a blast! Getting to relive some of those fabulous moments and getting to change the things you did wrong. :thumb:
scott28883 5-27-02, 11:35 AM I voted fer sure, in a heartbeat. I was a happy go lucky teen back then. I know I could live without the mordern conviences from today. I could do without dvds(what am I saying here< LOL). I know I could live without the internet. I dont have a cell phone so I know I wouldnt miss that. I think I could do it.
sketcher 5-27-02, 11:55 AM Such a simple question with an answer which surprises me! Would I want to go back? Hm.... for the music yes, definitely. For the clothes...um....I prefer the clothes of today. For the world events, I prefer not having the cold war.
Of course the Internet was around back then but would I want it? Well, I did perfectly well without it but could I give it up? HECK NO! :)
Christine 5-27-02, 07:07 PM Honestly, I would go back in a second. I love the music, the clothes, the hairstyles, the movies, the TV shows, and just the "feeling/atmosphere" of the 80's. I often wish I had been born earlier. I would go back, no question about it!
We all survived very well without cell phones, now we are completely dependent on them! We also survived without the internet or DVD players...I would be willing to give these up. Yes, even my computer! I would give that up to go back to the 80's.
I think I would do it?? :) There are a lot of things I could do differently. Can we look like we did in the 80's?
(but being 1/2 retarded I answer it as soon as I see the poll).
 Cal,vou and your sense of humor.....i love it! :p

Yes.
80s hair 5-29-02, 08:17 AM I had to vote NO! The 80s had many things that I loved. The music, fashion, movies, TV and things like that. The decade also had many things that I did not like. One of things it did not have is my wife, as an adult, that is. I would not have my son either. Those are two things I could not and would not give up. I also look at it this way. If I start to miss the 80s I always have the 80sxchange!! I also have my CD and record collection any time I want to go "back in time" to the 80s. I can plug in a video tape from any 80s movie I want. With all the 80s hype that is going on most TV shows are in rerun some place. I even have an all 80s radio station. In some ways I feel like I am living in the 80s again!!
I feel that in some ways I tend to look at the 80s through the eyes of a child. Only wanting to remember the good things. That is the way it should be. If I had it in my face 24/7 I would be forced to relive the bad. Why ruin those memories?!!
I wouldn't wanna go back to relive the 80s. I like it the way it is today - although it can always get better - and I couldn't live without the Internet ;)
I have fond memories of the 80s - and that's the way it should stay.
DC Rebel 5-29-02, 09:48 AM I do not want to go back to the 80's because I remember all the things that I did during that decade. I would not mind going back to the 60's or 70's because I was too young to remember anything about those decades.
I went with I don't know. Such a tough question. Very tempting. Would like to go back and redo certain things in my life. At the same time, I look forward to the future and seeing where thins go.
ElectricYouth 5-30-02, 11:26 AM I would want to go, but just for like a week. Then I'd be screaming for my Internet and cell phone.
I voted no. The 80s were great and I had a lot of fun then, but as I grow older I want to see the world progress also. I'm sure I idealize a lot of the things that happened then and like 80s Hair said, why would I want to go thru the bad things again? The music was great, my friends were great, most of my experiences were great, but there were some rough times too. I'm not sure I would want to raise my kids then, especially if they had some of the kind of friends I had then.
Reliving the fun aspects of the 80s here at the 80sxchange is enough for me. Plus I'd miss the internet, this place, and all the people I've met here.;)
I don't know.... Maybe not permanently. :)
I voted "No, we must goi into the future". I picked this because, if I was in the 80's all the time, I'm sure my opinion of it would change and it wouldn't be this special time in my life any longer, but just the same day in day out kinda thing! I wouldn't be able to reminisce about the good times of days gone by, because I'd still be there in it. Nah, change is good, it's life. :)
BlitzKid 6-03-02, 09:03 AM I don't really know. Of course i would like to see the 80s as a grown up instead of being a kid, going out partying and enjoying music, fashion and athmosphere, but then again, wouldn't it feel odd to live and know what will happen the next day? And I surley would miss things like Internet.
Maybe a journey back in time for a few weeks would do. :) So who on this list is secretly building a time machine??? :D
Cartoon_Chris 6-03-02, 03:17 PM The music is still here and the technology is better, so I'll stay here. I'm not crazy about selling my soul to Bill Gates, though....
I'd visit for a while on & off, and at the age I'm now. But not permanently...
Yes I would in a heart beat!
To know then what I know now, thats what it boils down to. But to have another go with all the young hotties(leagally) yea I would.
I said 'No'. A lot of bad things happened in the 80s, as well. I wouldn't want to relive those day after day. It would be nice if the atmosphere of the 80s lingered today, but time marches on. I want to see what's coming next! :)
Darkside 8-18-02, 09:59 PM I would love to go back! It was the best decade ever for music, movies, and everything.
Roemello 3-21-03, 01:31 AM I voted 'I dunno'....
As much as I love the decade, I don't think I could live in it permanently after having tasted the modern luxuries of today :D Maybe if my memory were erased upon returning it wouldn't be so bad...
Or maybe if it were a 5-10 year trip back, then return to the present afterwards, I'd do it, but permanent's a hefty commitment :p
PontiacKendall 4-05-04, 09:11 PM I voted other. Sure, it would be nice to once again enjoy the atmosphere of the 80's and I could certainly do without many of todays modern conveniences. But my guess is 20 years from now I'll be looking back at this decade and contemplating about going back and reliving it too. My kids will be grown and I'll miss their youthful innocence. Todays technologies will be replaced with something far more advanced and I'll wonder how I ever lived without it. That's the natural progression of life.
SweetestJezebel 4-09-04, 01:29 PM I voted 'no' because I most likely would not have met my husband, and I most definitely would not have met my best friend. I don't even want to imagine life without either of them!!!
old80rooster 4-12-04, 06:25 AM I would go back in a heartbeat, wouldn't change anything, would just like to relive it all again.
I really don't know. I guess if I could go back to being that age again knowing what I know now yeah, I think maybe I would. But there's no way I'd want to live through the 80s like I did before. As I've said before. I loved a lot of things about the 80s, but didn't particularly enjoy it most of the time.
I totally know how you feel. I love a lot of the 80's stuff now because I can enjoy it trouble free. But back then, my teen years weren't a particularly happy time for me mostly because of problems at home. (Although I must say my highschool years were better than my elementary school years. Oddly enough, I didn't have to deal w/nearly the same amount of bullying in highschool that I dealt w/in elementary school.) I would only go back if I knew what I knew now and had the level of confidence that I do now.
Slayergrrl 4-12-04, 07:39 PM I voted "No" but now that I think about it i'd go back for a "Visit" Buy some Microsoft and Apple stock. Change a few things and then slide right back where I am now, only a little richer and wiser.
Ah yes, the 80s! I would love to know now, what I didnt know then! And, to be able to live back in the timeframe where all/most of the girls fasions were what I like, I think it would be great!
sweettarts75 11-02-04, 01:07 PM The 80's were some of the best times of my life i would go back in a heart beat.
whistledog 11-02-04, 03:22 PM I would jump back into the 80's in a heartbeat :thumb:
80's fanatic 4-10-05, 10:56 PM Yes I would, the 80's were an awesome time in my life. I would give up everything to go back.
