View Full Version : We need a list of the top 100 movies of the 80s!
outofplacechild 1-18-01, 06:27 PM In the fine tradition of the AFI 100 Years, 100 Movies lists, I think that we should make a list of the Top 100 Movies Of The 80s. I feel that this decade was a wonderful time for movies. If I could get assistance from the higher-ups of this fine board, maybe we could make this a poll, and then possibly make a TV special out of the results. We need a list of potential nominees first. I could probably think of a few dozen off the top of my head (Some of these are personal favorites that I feel are representative of the decade, while others are those that have been acknowledged by many media types as being defining of the era):
"The Breakfast Club"
"16 Candles"
"Pretty In Pink"
"Working Girl"
"Beverly Hills Cop"
"Ferris Bueller's Day Off"
"Flashdance"
"Footloose"
"The Great Muppet Caper"
"The Muppets Take Manhattan"
"Krush Groove"
"Stop Making Sense"
"Desperately Seeking Susan"
"Lethal Weapon"
"Earth Girls Are Easy"
"The Blues Brothers"
"Spaceballs"
"Fast Times At Ridgemont High"
"The Wild Life"
"Streets Of Fire"
"Pee-Wee's Big Adventure"
"Tapeheads"
"Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird"
"Back To The Future"
"E.T"
The "Indiana Jones" trilogy
"Gremlins"
"The Goonies"
"Better Off Dead"
"Revenge Of The Nerds"
"UHF"
More suggestions are welcome. I would really like to work on this project, and perhaps I might have support from this board and its members.
Sincerely,
John "outofplacechild" Kilduff

Sal Collaziano 1-19-01, 03:02 AM Hey! I like this idea.. I don't know how much I could contribute though. Although I can add ONE: St. Elmo's Fire.. Right? I never saw it, but I've heard about it. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif Sure, let's get this going. We can work it out somehow.. Who else can think of some 80s movies that defined the decade which are NOT listed up above?

Roemello 1-19-01, 03:24 AM Funny you should mention St. Elmo's Fire....I had just flipped on the tube one night (forget when) and there it was...I only got to see like the last hour of it...wasn't bad. It had this kick ass instrumental at the end though that I ended up making a MIDI for http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif Well, maybe not exactly kick ass, but I liked it http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif Gave me something to do on the 'ol keyboard http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif
I'm gonna have to set up a spot for my original MIDI at my 80sXchange site at some point...
ANYWAY, now that I've gotten completely off topic, a few more movies as they pop into my mind:
"A Nightmare on Elm Street"
"Child's Play"
"Rocky IV"
"Rambo: First Blood pt. 2"
"Trading Places"
"Legend"
"Labrynth"
"The Terminator"
"Bloodsport"

Roemello 1-19-01, 05:54 PM HOLD ON! Ok, as of outofplacechild's last post, we hit the 100 mark. I made a list of those first 100... CLICK HERE (http://roemello.80sxchange.com/movielist.html) to check that out. Now we have to decide which from the current list get replaced with the new suggestions. Wow! Okay, how are we going to arrange this list? And should more be added and some be replaced? AstroGirl and TJ added some more.. Are they being left out? We should probably bring the list to 200 and weed out 101-200 to finish it off...

If not, we'll have to add it.. can't forget that one. Or The Outsiders.. Eddie and the Cruisers.. Not sure if I remember that one... The list grows...

outofplacechild 1-22-01, 06:00 PM That sounds good, Sal. We can make it a 200-movie list, and then weed out from there the 100 movies that best captured the 80s. If I had known that there would be more than 100 possible nominees, I would have said something. Thanks for bringing that to my attention, Sal. Now, let's start the addinghttp://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif

Purple Velvet Bohemian 1-22-01, 08:20 PM No one mentioned Blade Runner. :crying2 It is <u> THE </u> Best Science Fiction movie ever, but especially of the 80's! It is so good! Harrison Ford rocks in this. If you haven't seen it you must run out and rent it! I love that movie.

Roemello 1-27-01, 03:08 AM Ok, peeps! I got the list updated and increased to the 200 capacity http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif We still got more spots open! The listing is alphabetical so you can easily find out if your fave has been added or not.
Once again, here's the list URL: http://roemello.80sxchange.com/movielist.html
The table's kinda ugly, but oh well...I just threw it together as quick as I could http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif
I was thinking....to break this down to a top 100 after we get 200 total picks, we could make the top 100 by doing a kind of VH1's "The List" kinda thing. Here's how it could work...Ok, we get 10 panel members (which can basically be the first ten to contribute to this list). Each panel member chooses 10 movies to dump off the list, leaving us with 100. If any movies that get dumped that obviously should'nt have been, then we'll do a little fixing up of the list afterwards.
So.....what do ya think?

concan14 2-07-01, 04:31 PM i suggest that we first put the criteria on how to get the top 100 films of the 80's like how much money it earned, the number of Oscars it got, critically acclaimed, breakthrough film for an actor, actress or director, historical relevance, politically motivated, trendsetting, revolutionary in terms of high tech film making, etc... we are looking for top 100 so this kinda looks complicated in terms of personal choice on whoever is gonna decide on this one... i suggest that the nominated films should be categorize first in terms of its genre i.e. "officer and a gentleman" (drama) or top gun (action) ... then from there pick out the strong ones in each category in terms of popularity first (box office and awards wise) then whatever is left of it is where the problem lies how do you choose them? this sounds exciting and i hope we got to see the 100 films of the 80's on this board it really sounds exciting...can't wait
Roemello 2-07-01, 05:05 PM I'm in the process of making my own personal top 50 for my site...kind of a side venture on my part http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif I'll still work with this one though. "The only true knowledge exists in knowing, that you know nothing"
I submit the movie "The sure Thing". It starred John Cussack in 1986/87. Any man that drives across the entire country to get laid is top shelf. We have a lot in common.
Silveradocruiser 2-08-01, 12:28 PM Well, the list sure is long, but I must mention "Top Secret" from -84 starring a young Val Kilmerhttp://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif
The first one that came to my mind was "The adventures of Ford Fairlane" Although made in the 80s, it was released 1990http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//CRYING2.gif So... I guess it doesn't qualify to this listhttp://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//crying.gif

H@ns (I'm NOT the bad guy from Die Hard!)
Sal Collaziano 2-08-01, 02:10 PM Ahh, I dunno.. Sometimes we include stuff from the very early 90s into the 80s. Bands like Firehouse and Slaughter were big in the 90s but they still sang 80s music. The Wedding Singer is an 80s movie.. So, you see how it works. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

UM, not to challenge your sources Roem, but I am quite sure the year that RETURN TO THE FUTURE was out, that PEE WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE was a top 10 flick.
Anybody else think this too, or am I mad?
Ron

If it weren't for my horse, I would have never spent that year in college!
Roemello 2-08-01, 05:35 PM Pee Wee's Big Adventure grossed 40,900,000. A View to a Kill, positioned at #10, grossed 50,100,000. So Pee Wee was close, but no cigar...

"The only true knowledge exists in knowing, that you know nothing"
outofplacechild 2-09-01, 10:15 PM As I have added many movies to the list, I must subtract a few to make way for more essential choices. Many good suggestions have come up after my 80s movie bender an archive or two back, so without further ado, out these movies go:
"The Toxic Avenger"
"The Burbs"
"Sex, Lies and Videotape"
"Mr. Mom"
"Driving Miss Daisy"
"Beer"
"I'm Gonna Git You Sucka"
"Dead Ringers"
"Angel Heart"
These movies are the only ones I can think of to eliminate at this moment. With these 9 gone, plus 10 already vacant slots, that means we can add 19 more movies indicative of the decade. If anybody wants to discuss these choices http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//fight.gif, I'm all ears, or keys, or whatever http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//rolleyes.gif
By the way, I agree that we could add a few movies from 1990 if we can permit space!
Rock on!
Sincerely,
John "outofplacechild" Kilduff

I loved that movie!!

ROCK AND ROLL!!!
SAL IS GOD !!!
Later!! Tina
Roemello 2-10-01, 03:26 AM *hands Tina a gun* Ok, shoot me now... http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif I can't believe I forgot that one! Definitely an 80's classic in my opinion http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif I can't believe that.. I have that on tape and didn't remember to add it... http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif
I'm not sure if I should hold off on updating the list or not just yet....not sure if anyone will dispute some of the movies chosen to get dumped or not. I will add BeetleJuice, Lost Boys, and Stand by Me to make those "official" for Tina and outofplacechild http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif Those will probably stick on the finalized list.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but it should be on any top 100 list. "Manhunter" was a totally gnarly, tepid thriller. I thought the guy who played Hannibal Lector was as good as Anthony Hopkins. Yes, that's right. It was a prelude to 'Silence of the Lambs' and 'Hannibal.'

Has anyone given any thought as to what the selection criterions are? http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif And who gets to pick & choose? Would it be possible to set it up so that we could vote for our favourites? We could "nominate" movies and then vote for our 10 (or 20 if 10 is too limiting) favourite movies...just a though anyway http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif I'll be contributing to the list shortly - consider yourselves warned http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif

Who could forget the phrase, "Two men enter, one man leaves."
What? No one has mentioned "Highlander"? This is one of my all time favorite movies. You had action, adventure, romance and even humor. This is a product of the 80's that has definitely stood the test of time. But! That's just MHO.

If I'm here and your here doesn't that make it our time?
