I was just wondering what people here prefer when playing strategy games. The poll is not a for or against poll, as the one doesn't exclude the other.

I prefer the turn based games myself, as they give time for reflection on strategy and tactics better. Should I give examples, I would say the Heroes of Might & Magic series, the Panzer General series and the Jagged Alliance series. I think the gameplay becomes much richer in the turnbased games.

But I do enjoy the RTS now and again, when playing friends.

Real Time anyday. The whole Turn based idea is driving me mad. I simply don't have the patience, especially in games where the computer takes minutes before moving. If I want a turn-based game, then I prefer a good old game of Chess anyday. :)

For my strategy needs I definitely favour Real Time .... Just like you Flix I hate to wait for the opponent to place his units, boooooooooooooooooooring .... That said I think the mix of RT and turn based interface of North and South (on the Amiga) worked really good .... Even tho' this is hardly a strategy game.

The few RPG (FF series, King's Bounty & HOMAM) I've tried turnbased worked just fine for me :)

I have no preferences, as I enjoy playing both types, depending on what sounds good at the time. It could be a turn-based game like Stratego or a real-time game like SSBM.

As an "old school"-style wargame/RPG fan, I go with turn-based. I LIKE war to feel like chess! And Panzer General was my introduction to the wargame genre, so there you go.

With RPG games I particularly prefer turn based. I like to strategise. I find that in real time games I tend to use the same methods each time and don't experiment with other options.

Admittedly some turn based systems can be boring, but that is really the fault of the game developers for making it that way. The Final Fantasy series isn't hugely popular for nothing.

What I really hate is when they try to combine real time with turn based. In moderation it's ok, for instance Final Fantasy has a certain element of real time in that you have a certain amount of time to come up with attack, but other's like Star Ocean; the second story have a really frustrating combination of both.

I don't have any preferences there, although the majority of strategic games I've played recently like Sudden Strike or Stronghold are real time based.

But playing Panzer General I on an 486 DX2/66 drove me sometimes mad when the computer took ages to make the next turn... :D

I like turn-based for RPGs, but prefer real-time for PC stragedy games.

I don't do strategy games all that often, but when I do, I prefer real time. Just don't have the patience for turn based.

When I play an rpg I like both but I lean more to the turn based, because of Legends of Dragoon.(Playstation) Althought i love FF8 and like the real time battle. for my new pencil and paper rpg named Kolvir I have to make it turn based scince it would be simpler. Plus it would be wierd using an egg timer in battles.

I like both!

I play PG 2 and Close Combat 2 & 5 so both genres are fine with me!
