View Full Version : New Ad Technology may pop up...

Hey all. Something at the company who hosts our banner ads is doing something wierd. I kill the pop-ups as I find them. If there are a few stragglers, it's just because I haven't had the time to remove them yet. They don't give me the option to either AD or NOT, they just AD - that's the way it works.

Now, there's some new technology that's going to appear within a couple of hours. I'll try to be here later on to see any complaints. They SAY this floating ad will only pop up once every 15 hours or so per person. Please let me know if this is NOT the case.

Thank you!

Thanks for the warning, but I don't have to worry about them anymore since I installed an ad blocker. :) Very, very few ads get past it. :thumb:

Nottie, could you maybe PM me how to get one of those ad blockers? Or even one of my fave tech guys could, wavey or Shakey, if you're around... :* Pretty please?

I just got one for a free credit report, Sal, that's why I came in here. :) Thanx for the heads up.

Always at your service, Mylady... ;)

You may want to try WebWasher 3.0 (http://www.webwasher.com/en/products/wwash/download.htm), a product made by Siemens engineers which was highly rated by German computer magazines. Don't worry, the link will lead you to the English version. :D

Cool. I'm glad it's atleast working honestly and only giving one show per person per 15 hours. I guess it can't be that bad. Maybe it'll earn me a little cash. I'm going to pay for the next major upgrade coming very soon. I'm not even going to think about upgrading myself. Actually, there's a security upgrade that we need as well. I'm paying for that too. This place has just grown to big for me to play around with myself...

Thanks again everyone...

Great link, Wavemaster. I just downloaded Webwasher and it seems to work very well. :) :thumb: I did see one of those strange sliding ads when I first logged on to the Xchange (before I installed the Webwasher program).

I just got one of those sliders (on the first page of the forum). Kinda funny, but still annoying ;) I wonder why companies still insist on usuing these banner ads? Oh well.

I saw it today. Doesn't really bother me. I am with Sketcher on the question: Why does companies insist on banner ads? I am most certainly never buying anything from them, since it will only promote even more of them.

I was going to ask Roemello about those sliders. They are not bothering me, but I was wondering if they had anything to do with the 80sxchange. Now I know.

I would have to say those ads are extremely annoying. Slides from left to right? How much attention do they need??

Well it ain't my server, but I would kill them. Flat out annoying.

Let's face it... there are no good working banner ads out there. Even my cousin who used to use amazon for book sales isn't making a dime off it anymore.

Most support has to come from your pocket. I found this out.

My favorite banner blocker is POW (http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/pow.htm) from AnalogX. Very simple to use and very effective. Best of all, it is 100% free. :) Doesn't work with the sliding ad though.

Just thought I'd let you know that the Cheap Tickets banner throws up an add nearly every time I open a new page. It's really getting on my nerves. :grrr:

It's been doing that to me, too, Jen. Plus, it's taking forever to load a reply or a new page....

Thank you! I thought I was the only one who was having that problem  Also, my browser doesn't forward me to certain areas anymore...

I've been having trouble with my "back" button. Sometimes I have to hit it two or three times to get back one page. I wonder what's up with that. (oh, and it's not just on one computer, it's on all three.)

Well, it's either deal with ads or deal with no site. This place costs A LOT to keep going and Sal ain't rich. These new ads had to be put in... one of the old ones was preventing the PM Pop up feature from working. I'd rather deal with the ads than lose board functionality.

I get on via an old PC and an old laptop both running old OS's on a 56k connection and I haven't had any problems at all using the site... working the same as it always has for me.

I can deal with the ads, it's the other stuff that's annoying. ;) Like the fact that I'll hit 'submit reply', wait a minute, and still have to use that "click here if you're tired of waiting or your browser doesn't forward you" button.

I forgot to mention...I keep getting redirected to a "Our Site Has Been Updated" page, so I deleted my old link and saved the new one, so that stopped. And, oddly enough, my PM pop-up just worked.

That's because we fixed the PM Pop up problem by replacing the old ads that were preventing it from working with these new ones ;)

So I still have to deal with the cheap tickets pop-up? :(

It's the only one that does that.

Roemello

Unfortunately yes... I don't believe there's any picking and choosing when it comes to the ad rotation... just gotta take what they throw. I know it's annoying... it was coming up like mad last night for me, but I'll deal. I haven't seen it at all today :)

I haven't had much of a problem with that. And I know how much it must cost to run a board like this. So, if it keeps this board alive, it's just a minor thing to deal with. Bandwith ain't cheap! Plus all the monthly hits this gets...WOW! I can imagine the $$$ it takes to run this site!

Sorry about the ads, everyone! I think I may have been able to keep the Cheap Tickets ads from coming up. Let me know if it's still a problem.

If we were able to get some advertisers around here (other than the80sgame - which is our only one), this wouldn't be an issue. It's just nearly impossible to find advertisers for anything in regards to the 80s...

Otherwise.. If you get any new Cheap Tickets popups, please PM me. I'd like to know...

Thanks...

I have no problems what so ever with any ads, because I use MyPopupKiller, which was free, and I get to pick and choose what I can keep.
I do notice that it does take longer to load pages, but that's just a minor thing.
I'm surprised other sponsors aren't out there to help you out besides the 80s Board game, Sal. If I think of any, I'll definitely let you know.

As bad as a sliding ad is, it's nowhere near as bad as those ads that fade in over the text you are trying to read and then you have to spend 20 minutes looking for the x to close it. Be glad there are none of those here. :)
