View Full Version : Movies: Go Out To Watch Or See Them At Home?
Iluvthe80s 5-04-02, 11:32 PM Movie admission prices in theatres have been rising in the past few years. Here in Austin to go to a movie after 6pm costs roughly about $7.50. For that price I would rather wait to rent the movie or for a few more dollars just buy it. Plus, I like the comfort of home to watch a movie. You don't have to worry about noisy kids, tall people sitting in front of you, and you can stop the movie if you need to go to the bathroom. What is your views on this subject?
I like both. It also depends on the movie too. If it is a really actioned packed, special effects extravaganza, you have to see it at the movies. Otherwise I'll just wait for it to come out on DVD or video. :)
DC Rebel 5-05-02, 12:18 AM There are some movies that I just have to see at the theatres. There are others that I can wait till they come out on DVD. There are a few movies that I will see at the theatre and then buy the DVD when it comes out.
Yeah prices may be on the rise, but it still isn't too much, yet. :)
I like to visit the cinema 2-3 times a month and if I can't make a certain film I know I'd like, I'll buy it when it comes out on DVD. Some films I just have to see right away ("Lord Of The Rings") and can't wait the 5-8 months for the DVD/VHS/Rental to hit the shelves! Some films I like to experience with audiences for the excitement and fun stuff that goes on...like..."Star Wars"!! People dress up like favorite characters, audience is into it cheering, it makes it fun! I am really getting more out of it that just seeing the film and something like that is pricelss to me! :) I can always watch it in the comfort of my own home later on DVD. :)
80sTrivia 5-05-02, 09:09 AM I'm one who actually enjoys going out to the movie theatre to see the newest releases. I'm not one to rent movies and watch them...
ImSoooSure 5-06-02, 12:57 AM I like to buy them and watch them at home. Too many potty breaks at the theatre for me!:p
BlitzKid 5-06-02, 04:14 AM I am a big fan of movie theatres, it is just nicer to see a movie on a large screen with a box of popcorn, than sitting at home in fornt of the TV were i have to do the pop corn myself! :)
sketcher 5-06-02, 08:33 AM I agree, I prefer to see them on the large screen (well certian movies) but here in Toronto, prices are now $13.50 and I feel utterly ripped off. Plus, people tend to talk more during films and I'm tired of telling them off.
So, I try to go as late as possible and I'm pretty selective of which films to fork over $14 for.
The ones I don't mind spending so much and enduring the chatters is Harry Potter and most recently, Spiderman (highly recommended!).
Otherwise, I'd just rent it at home which I hardly do anyway.
The thing which I love to do is to see a movie I am excited about on opening night. It adds so much more to the excitement!
LOSTNTHE80S 5-06-02, 09:13 AM We would rather buy or rent and watch at home. We just got a new multi screen theatre so ticket prices are about $5.50 for the evening shows. I know that's not too bad compared to cities where people are paying $7 or more for a ticket...but a year ago with our old theatre...tickets were only $2.50. The concessions are the real killers....especially if you have kids. I remember looking forward to getting snacks at the snackbar when I was a girl and so of course..my girls like to do that too!
We have an excellent movie collection though and can watch them as much as we care too.
Good topic. :)
angeleyes25 5-06-02, 02:56 PM I like to both but unfortunatly I never have the chance to go to the thearter.I can't afford to see them at the thearter the ticket prices are expensive.I think the last movie I saw at the thearter was the re-make of physco so I mostly wait for them to come out on video and I just rent them and watch them at home.
space-invader 5-07-02, 05:37 AM this was hard for me to answer, cause i don't goto movies in the theatre anymore (last time i went was 8 years ago!), and i only get videos once in a blue moon (average once per year, and they would be old movies). I like watching the occasional cult/foreign/classic old movie occasionally on tv though, so it's not completely "i dont watch movies so i dont care" attitude, but i guess i am probably as close as that as you can get!
I voted for doing both, but I'll go with a few of the other comments on this one. Some movies just
have to be experienced in the theatre with great sound and picture (Star Wars - LOTR - T3 when it comes out) and others, mostly dramas and such can be viewed at home. We pay around what would be the equivalent of 8 US dollars here in Denmark where I live to go see a movie - so of course it gets expensive with all the accessories that go along with a visit to the theatre. But I feel it's definately worth it for the "big" movies.
I voted for, 'I like to do both'. However, I like to watch movies at home a little bit more. Especially with someone. :D
Like most are saying, there are certain movies that should be seen on a big screen. In that case, It's better to go to the theater. ;)
I just wish the seats were more comfortable. :(
Dancingdoll1986 5-11-02, 09:12 AM I like doing both.
When we have money coming in, I like to go to the theater in Valley View, because they have Stadium Seating.....the chairs are really comfy...they have drink holders....and I can see even if there is a tall person in front of me!!
When we are strapped...I like to curl up with Aron and make big bowls of popcorn and just keep popping in DVD's all night!!Very cozy!!
I rather buy a DVD and have ice cream with my boyfriend. That is how I prefer to watch my movies. :) :D
Roemello 3-21-03, 01:48 AM I do both...though more watching at home than going out. I only go out to see a movie if it's really worth catching on the big screen or if it's something I really, really want to see :verycool:
Or if I'm dragged to one...that's the more common situation...
Rhelawen 3-21-03, 10:41 AM I like to do both. There are some movies, like Lord of the Rings, that I simply had to see on the big screen. :D
Slayergrrl 3-21-03, 10:44 AM I like both. Depends on my mood and who i'm with. Staying home does have it's benefits ecspecially if someone special is involved. :)

My thoughts exactly.....
Opheliarose 3-21-03, 11:54 AM I like to do both!! But with Ticket prices on the rise, It has to be a movie I really want to see. If not than I ususally wait for it to come out on video and I will rent it...
I prefer watching movies at home. That way I can get comfortable and relax. They might kick me out of the theater for sitting around in my boxers. :D
depends on the movie.. if it was something i liked then i'll rent it or buy from Blockbuster, if not then i'll watch it once on ppv then never again unless i'm uber bored
Darkside 3-30-03, 09:38 PM I actually like to see them at home the best. You can pause the movie when you want and you don't have to deal with people being rude and talking during the movie.
Blitzburgh87 5-18-03, 07:24 PM i like to do both. i more often wait for it to come out on dvd unless its something i really want to see.
whistledog 11-10-04, 10:30 PM I never rent movies anymore. I usually just buy 'em, but I also love to see them in the theatres :thumb:
80's fanatic 4-10-05, 10:43 PM I'm a 'homebody'. I'd rather rent or better yet, buy, a movie and watch it at in the comfort of my own home.
Actually we are kinda wierd I guess in that department. We go to the theater, watch it, if we like it, we buy the DVD. I've got every star wars movie released so far and my wife claims I've watched them 30 billion times (More accurately is maybe 30 times each).
Miss INXS 5-09-05, 03:12 AM I like both. Depends on if I wanna go on opening day and on my mood at the time, but I am quite flexible about that. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/wink.gif
Princess 5-09-05, 07:11 AM I buy dvd's and watch at home :)
Poindexter 5-09-05, 09:20 AM I'd rather watch at home.
I wouldn't mind the theater, and I guess it's a sign of my age, but the volume about blows my eardrums out! . I don't like that you have to sit through a bunch of commercials before the movie starts. I don't think we should have to PAY to see a bunch of products being hawked on the big screen. :irked:
Glenn Gulia 5-12-05, 10:20 PM Netflix!!!!!!!!!!! I'd rather watch em at home :thumb:
BrownEyedGirl 5-13-05, 09:15 AM I love going to the movies but we can't have a babysitter available every time we have an urge to see a movie and it can get expensive so we usually only go to the movies for the ones we REALLY want to see. Otherwise we wait till they are out on DVD which doesn't seem to take very long anymore anyway.
